Powers Introduction Rivoli's Hummingbird was named in honor of the Duke of Rivoli when the species was described by René Lesson in 1829 (1). Even when it became known that William Swainson had written an earlier description of this species in 1827, the common name Rivoli's Hummingbird remained until the early 1980s, when it was changed to Magnificent Hummingbird. In 2017, however, the name was restored to Rivoli's Hummingbird when the American Ornithological Society officially recognized Eugenes fulgens as a distinct species from E. spectabilis, the Talamanca Hummingbird, of the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama (2). Dramatic Nucleolar Dispersion in the Salivary Gland of Schwenkfeldina Sp
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Dramatic nucleolar dispersion in the salivary gland of Schwenkfeldina sp. (Diptera: Sciaridae) José Mariano Amabis & Eduardo Gorab * Micronucleoli are among the structures composing the peculiar scenario of the nucleolus in salivary gland nuclei of dipterans representative of Sciaridae. Micronucleolar bodies contain ribosomal DNA and RNA, are transcriptionally active and may appear free in the nucleoplasm or associated with specifc chromosome regions in salivary gland nuclei. This report deals with an extreme case of nucleolar fragmentation/dispersion detected in the salivary gland of Schwenkfeldina sp. Such a phenomenon in this species was found to be restricted to cell types undergoing polyteny and seems to be diferentially controlled according to the cell type. Furthermore, transcriptional activity was detected in virtually all the micronucleolar bodies generated in the salivary gland. The relative proportion of the rDNA in polytene and diploid tissues showed that rDNA under-replication did not occur in polytene nuclei suggesting that the nucleolar and concomitant rDNA dispersion in Schwenkfeldina sp. may refect a previously hypothesised process in order to counterbalance the rDNA loss due to the under-replication. The chromosomal distribution of epigenetic markers for the heterochromatin agreed with early cytological observations in this species suggesting that heterochromatin is spread throughout the chromosome length of Schwenkfeldina sp. A comparison made with results from another sciarid species argues for a role played by the heterochromatin in the establishment of the rDNA topology in polytene nuclei of Sciaridae. Transcriptional activity of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes in specifc chromosome regions is the primary event for the local assembly of the nucleolus, the starting site of ribosome biogenesis. -
TOUR REPORT Southwestern Amazonia 2017 Final
For the first time on a Birdquest tour, the Holy Grail from the Brazilian Amazon, Rondonia Bushbird – male (Eduardo Patrial) BRAZIL’S SOUTHWESTERN AMAZONIA 7 / 11 - 24 JUNE 2017 LEADER: EDUARDO PATRIAL What an impressive and rewarding tour it was this inaugural Brazil’s Southwestern Amazonia. Sixteen days of fine Amazonian birding, exploring some of the most fascinating forests and campina habitats in three different Brazilian states: Rondonia, Amazonas and Acre. We recorded over five hundred species (536) with the exquisite taste of specialties from the Rondonia and Inambari endemism centres, respectively east bank and west bank of Rio Madeira. At least eight Birdquest lifer birds were acquired on this tour: the rare Rondonia Bushbird; Brazilian endemics White-breasted Antbird, Manicore Warbling Antbird, Aripuana Antwren and Chico’s Tyrannulet; also Buff-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher, Acre Tody-Tyrant and the amazing Rufous Twistwing. Our itinerary definitely put together one of the finest selections of Amazonian avifauna, though for a next trip there are probably few adjustments to be done. The pre-tour extension campsite brings you to very basic camping conditions, with company of some mosquitoes and relentless heat, but certainly a remarkable site for birding, the Igarapé São João really provided an amazing experience. From the rich east part of Rondonia, the fascinating savannas and endless forests around Humaitá in Amazonas, and finally the impressive bamboo forest at Rio Branco in Acre, this tour focused the endemics from both sides of the medium Rio Madeira. -
