4 Abstract English Elfriede Jelinek and Kathrin Röggla, two Austrian dramatists (Röggla living in Berlin), describe themselves as being critical of society, respectively politically engaged authors. Their oeuvres serve the purpose to illuminate the confrontations and reflections of the authors on social processes, phenomenon and balances of power. For Jelinek and Röggla text and theatre function as a »megaphone«, and even though it has been Elfriede Jelinek who created the methods of »postdramatic theatre« thus stripping sentences and using performative language, both authors have been witnesses of equal social experiences concerning neoliberal ideology, both using »deconstruction of traditional modes of thought« (a critical dismantling of ideals and meanings, even their own ones). Even though their demands on literature differ - Jelinek talks of her »excessive references to morality« whereas Röggla turns away from any moral demands in authoritarian manner - their aims or methods of aesthetic techniques stay the same as both endeavor to make the darkest depths of communication feigned by the media visible and understandable. Jelinek and Röggla both try to show ambivalence and contradiction by means of language and its performative possibilities; they both try to initiate life as an experience of one’s own by means of obstinacy and resistance against power structures and claims of truth. They both set an example of protest that seems their main matter of concern. In my thesis I am looking at three texts each in detail (Elfriede Jelinek: Bambiland, Ulrike Maria Stuart, Rechnitz – Der Würgeengel and Kathrin Röggla: fake reports, wir schlafen nicht, worst case) that deal with social and political events and proceedings of the present. The question arises to what extent the two authors of different generation’s use political writing, what their methods are and wherein the difference of their texts is located. 5 Inhaltsverzeichnis Prolog…………………………………………………………………………………….7 1.
