1 of 6 C A T E R I N A V A L E N T E THE CAREER OF AN INTERNATIONAL STAR! or simply A WOMAN BORN FOR MUSIC! London's DAILY SKETCH (1970) wrote: "Whatever it takes to be a star, she's got it"! This laconic statement implicates the superlatives used by other journalists all over the world. Whether they call her "Caterina la grande" in Italy or "Caterina the great" in England and the U.S.A., she is the same everywhere: an undisputed queen of show business. Celebrated by the public, awarded the highest praise by her peers, revered by the greatest musicians and popular among other artists. She is fortunate to have a blessed voice, unique musicality, and possesses a particularly distinctive feel for rhythm. But that's not all. This graceful woman worked on herself continuously and unwaveringly with incredible tenacity and an iron will. Whether she was singing, dancing, or playing solo guitar, she did so with total focus. Her abilities, combined with her charismatic personality gave this artist a glittering career and led to her becoming a well-established celebrity in the world of entertainment. To give a complete description of her career would take too long, so here is just a short summary of the most important stages of her success. 1931 Born on January 14 in Paris France. Her mother, Maria Valente, is a world-famous musical clown and her father, Giuseppe, is a talented musician. Her parents are Italian; Caterina therefore acquires Italian nationality. 1936 First appearance at the Friedrichsbau in Stuttgart within the family group.

  • ANDREA BOCELLI at Last, a Legend at Last, a Legend for the New
ANDREA BOCELLI At last, a legend At last, a legend for the new millennium. A myth in the Homeric sense, “story delivered by word of mouth”, which blossomed through singing, just like Caruso, Gigli, Del Monaco, Corelli… A legend of Andrea Bocelli’s caliber cannot be artificially designed: not even the most astute marketing plan would be able to come up with such a result. People simply recognize his talent and choose him. This is what happened, in an apparently well-matched but perfect context, the Italian singing competition Sanremo in 1994, because the childhood of a legend follows a course that breaks tradition. Since then, the tone of his voice has brought gentleness to the world and his fame has increased exponentially. “If God could sing, He would sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli”: even Celine Dion’s famous comment is a clear, unadorned testament to the artist’s legendary status, as well as the perception of a God given gift. That voice, that melancholic and at the same time radiant tone, unrivalled in interpreting the love song of a lover or a father, a matchless expression of earthly desire or heavenly love. We are about to celebrate the first twenty years of his career, supported by the sale of 80 million records. With talent comes responsibility “I don’t think one decides to become a singer, it is decided for you by the reactions of the people around you”. Andrea Bocelli has had to come to terms with having two all-encompassing gifts. The first is a specific timbre, which has become his signature, full and powerful, versatile to the point that he can range from the belcanto to the furor of verismo, from the sacred repertoire to the popular ballads.

  • Stationen in Der Karriere Eines Yé-Yé-Idols
01 I 2016 Archiv für Textmusikforschung Sylvie Vartan – 50 ans de bonheur? Stationen in der Karriere eines yé-yé-Idols Andreas BONNERMEIER (Mainz) Summary About 50 years ago, Sylvie Vartan was one of the major stars of the French chanson yé-yé. Being the perfect example of promulgation through the mass media, she quickly received the status of an idol and became one of the favorite copains of French adolescents in the 1960s. As one of the few real stars of the yé-yé movement, she managed to continue her career up to the present day: fi rst by adopting the American show model, then by engaging in projects with new authors and representatives of the new French chanson. Success was not always part of the show, but Vartan found a way to conserve parts of her public even in the new millennium. Is this the reason why she can be considered an idol unaffected by time?
