Dear Media Member, IIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you to India for the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League Final Bhubaneswar 2017. Firstly, let me offer my sincere congratulations to the seven men’s teams who each earned the right to play in this Final thanks to outstanding performances at the respective Semi-Final events in London and Johannesburg earlier this year, joining home favourites India for what is expected to be an exciting climax to the 2017 hockey calendar. With Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and hosts India all in action at the Kalinga Stadium, a venue that will play host to next year’s Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, the competition is of the very highest calibre. Yet again, the stadium will welcome the world’s best, and all eight teams will be looking for a title success which could provide a crucial psychological advantage ahead of the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018. The Finals competitions in Auckland (women) and Bhubaneswar (men) will bring the curtain down on the third season of the Hockey World League, with eight nations determined to make their mark and earning the right to raise the trophy aloft. In 2013, the Netherlands achieved a remarkable double in the inaugural edition of the Hockey World League, with both the men’s and women’s international teams storming to glory at the respective competitions. Oranje women claimed the title with a superb display at the Final in San Miguel de Tucaman in Argentina, while the dazzling Dutch men’s team overcame all challengers to triumph in . The silverware attained by the Dutch national teams in the first edition of the competition were redesigned ahead of the 2014-15 season. With new look trophies also came new winners, as Argentina women took the title on home soil in Rosario and Australia’s Kookaburras emerging victorious in Raipur, India. The new trophies were designed and constructed in London, England. Both the men’s and women’s trophies feature a single stack column of 12 walnut plectrums surrounded by gold effect wings, placed on a hardwood walnut base. The trophies weigh approximately 1.2 kilograms each, while the top plectrum of each trophy features a map of the world which has been inlaid by 23 carat gold leaf. The now iconic second generation trophies will be up for grabs in the third edition of the competition. Time will reveal just who will earn the right to lift these trophies above their heads. When they do, they will be creating their own magical moment of hockey history.

Pool A – Argentina, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain

Argentina Current FIH World Ranking: 1 How they qualified: 2nd Place – Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final, London.

Notable honours: Olympic gold medallists (2016), FIH World Cup bronze medallists (2014), 9x winners (1967, 1971, 1975, 1979, 1991, 1995, 2003, 2011, 2015), 3x Pan American Cup winners (2004, 2013, 2017), FIH Champions Trophy bronze medallists (2008), 3x FIH Champions Challenge 1 winners (2005, 2007, 2012), winners (2008).

About the team: Argentina have always produced international teams with plenty of talent, but over the past three years the men’s side has surged from being outside of the top ten in the FIH Hero World Rankings to become the Olympic champions and the number one ranked team in the game. Head Coach and former Argentina international Carlos “Chapa” Retegui – the man who, remarkably, guided both the men and the women’s national sides to bronze medals at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup before leading the men to Olympic glory at Rio 2016 – is the man behind the revolution, helping “Los Leones” (The Lions) to realise their massive potential. Key players include veteran team captain Matias Paredes and creative genius , although it is powerfully built penalty corner expert who often grabs the headlines thanks to his incredible prowess from set-pieces. Twenty-year-old attacker is another player worth keeping an eye on, with his pace, trickery and on-field intelligence making him one of the hottest young talents in the game. The team followed their second-place finish at the Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final in London by claiming their second consecutive Pan American Cup title, defeating Canada 2-0 in the final. Thirty-five-year-old Paredes was named best player at the competition and also finished joint top scorer with seven goals alongside team-mate Peillat.

One to watch: Lucas Vila. Long considered one of the most naturally gifted attackers in world hockey, Vila has a reputation for scoring spectacular goals and always provides assists for his team-mates. The 31-year-old has been central to Argentina’s rapid rise up the FIH Hero World Rankings table and played an instrumental role in their Olympic success last year.

Notable honours: Olympic silver medallists (2016), Olympic bronze medallists (1920), Hockey World League silver medallists (2015), European silver medallists (2013, 2017), European bronze medallists (2007), 5th place - Olympic Games (2012), 5th place - Rabobank Hockey World Cup (2014), 5th place - Hero (2014).

About the team: While the rise of Belgium’s Red Lions in recent years has been well documented, the team scaled new heights in 2016. A superb silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was hard earned and fully deserved, with the team producing some exceptional performances along the way. Their individual stars were also recognized, with Rio captain John-John Dohmen - who recently returned to the international scene after a year-long break - and defensive star being named the respective FIH Player and Rising Star of the Year for 2016. Many of the stars of Rio remain part of the squad, including appearance double centurions Cedric Charlier, captain , and striker . The team coached by New Zealander Shane McLeod have been playing some magnificent hockey this year, with their superb first place finish at the Hockey World League Semi-Final in Johannesburg being followed up by winning silver at the Rabo EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam, where they were defeated 4-2 by the Netherlands – a team they had thrashed 5-0 in the pool phase of the competition - in the gold medal match. Belgium have proven time and time again that they are a match for anyone, and could challenge for top honours in Bhubaneswar

One to watch: Arthur van Doren. A defender with composure beyond his years, Van Doren was a central figure in the Red Lions team that won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and was named FIH Rising Star of the Year for 2016.

About the team: Having achieved first place finishes at both the Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final in London and the Rabo EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam, 2017 has been a truly memorable one for the men in Oranje. The squad selected by Head Coach Max Caldas for the Odisha Hockey World League Final contains a glittering array of extraordinary talent including play-makers and Robbert Kemperman as well as powerful striker Mirco Pruijser, who finished as top scorer at August’s Rabo EuroHockey Championships to help his team claim defend their continental title in Amsterdam. They also have a powerful penalty corner weapon in defender , who ranks alongside Argentina’s Gonzalo Peillat as one of the world’s best drag-flickers. Notable honours: 3x Olympic silver medallists (1980, 1996, 2008), 2x FIH World Cup silver medallists (1971, 1998), European Champions (1974, 2005), FIH Champions Trophy winners (2004), FIH Champions Challenge 1 winners (2003).

About the team: A fifth place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games provided evidence that the Red Sticks are once again a team to be feared, a point re-emphasised by their excellent fourth place finish at the Hockey World League Semi-Final in Johannesburg earlier this year. Spain recorded wins against Japan, France, New Zealand and Ireland at the event in South Africa before suffering an agonising shoot-out defeat at the hands of Germany in the competition semi-finals. Despite an 8-1 loss against Australia in the 3-4 classification match, Spain returned to Europe with their heads held high having achieved their two main targets: World Cup and Hockey World League Final qualification. Head Coach and former France international Frederic Soyez has named numerous long-serving players for the competition in Bhubaneswar including team captain Miguel Delas, Sergi Enrique, world class goalkeeper Quico Cortes and lively forward Pau Quemada. Those four players have a combined total of over 900 international appearances, with Marc Salles and Vincent Ruiz also members of the 100 caps club. The experienced players are complemented by some exciting stars of the future, the brightest of those being forward Enrique Gonzalez, who was named best player at last year’s Junior World Cup. Already a central figure in the current Spanish set-up at the age of 21, Gonzalez is a rare talent whose best years are very much ahead of him.

One to watch: Sergi Enrique. The most capped player within the current Red Sticks squad, Enrique is a classy defender who also steps into midfield when required. An Olympic silver medal winner from the Beijing 2008 Games, having also been part of the Spain squads that finished sixth at London 2012 and fifth at Rio 2016.

Australia Current FIH World Ranking: 2 How they qualified: 3rd Place – Hockey World League Semi-Final, Johannesburg.

Notable honours: Olympic gold medallists (2004) 3x Olympic silver medallists (1968, 1976, 1992), 5x Olympic bronze medallists (1964, 1996, 2000, 2008, 2012), 3x World champions (1986, 2010, 2014), Hockey World League champions (2015), 14x Champions Trophy winners (1983, 1984, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1999, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016), 5x Commonwealth Games gold medallists (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014), 10x Oceania Cup champions (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017).

About the team: As the reigning World, Champions Trophy, Oceania Cup, Hockey World League and Commonwealth Games title holders, few can dispute that Australia’s “Kookaburras” are one of the most formidable teams in the game. The side endured a torrid time at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where a sixth-place finish was their worst since 1960 and the first time that they had failed to medal since 1988. It was a disappointment that they will be keen to put behind them, bidding to reclaim their place at the top of the FIH Hero World Rankings in the lead up to their World Cup title defence in India next year. The team selected by Head Coach – the former Australian international who stepped into the role at the start of 2017 following spells overseeing Belgium’s Red Lions and New Zealand’s Black Sticks – is certainly not lacking in quality. Mark Knowles, the FIH Player of the Year for 2014, remains a central figure in defence, as does the ever-reliable , while brilliant midfielder – who is rapidly closing in on 300 international caps – makes a welcome return after missing the Hockey World League Semi-Final in Johannesburg due to the birth of his son. Penalty corner star Jeremy Hayward and quicksilver attacker Jake Whetton are also world class performers for a team that is looking to defend the Hockey World League title that they won in 2015.

One to watch: Mark Knowles. The sole survivor of the Olympic gold medal winning Kookaburras team Athens 2004, Mark Knowles remains one of the world’s finest defenders and is likely to be a central figure for the team in Bhubaneswar.

Germany Current FIH World Ranking: 5 How they qualified: 2nd Place – Hockey World League Semi-Final, Johannesburg.

Notable honours: 4x Olympic gold medallists (1972, 1992, 2008, 2012), 2x World champions (2002, 2006), 9x Champions Trophy winners (1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2007, 2014), 8x European champions (1970, 1978, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2011, 2013)

About the team: Germany have long been a global hockey powerhouse, and their bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games provided a timely reminder of that fact. A second-place finish at the Hockey World League Semi-Final event in Johannesburg was more than enough to secure berths at the Odisha Hockey World League Final 2017 and the Odisha Hockey World Cup 2018, a feat the team achieved without the remarkable talents of Olympic gold medallists , and Martin Häner, who all return for this event. Classy midfielder and attacking star Christopher Rühr have also been named in the squad selected by Head Coach Stefan Kermas, who has also given tournament debuts to prospects Johannes Große and Phillipp Huber. A fourth-place finish at August’s Rabo EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam was something of an anti-climax, but the team are expected to be back to their best in Bhubaneswar.

One to watch: Christopher Rühr. A central figure in Germany’s Olympic bronze medal winning performance at Rio 2016, 23-year-old Christopher Rühr is a sensational attacker blessed with speed, skill, guile and supreme confidence. Named FIH Rising Star of the Year both in 2013 and 2015.

INDIA Current FIH World Ranking: 6 How they qualified: Host nation.

Notable honours: 8x Olympic gold medallists (1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1980), Olympic silver medallists (1960), 2x Olympic bronze medallists (1968, 1972), World champions (1975), 3x Asian Games champions (1966, 1998, 2014), 3x Asia Cup champions (2003, 2007, 2017). Hockey World League bronze medallists (2015), Champions Trophy silver medallists (2016).

About the team: By their own very high standards, India’s sixth place finish at June’s Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final in London was certainly below expectations. However, the team bounced back to winning ways in October by winning their first Asia Cup since 2007, defeating Malaysia in the competition final 2-1. It was a perfect start to the tenure of new Head Coach Sjoerd Marijne, who replaced fellow Dutchman in September following a period in charge of the India women’s national team. Marijne will be hoping his India side can take their excellent form from the Continental Championship into the Odisha Hockey World League Final. Despite their notable dip in form at the World League Semi- Final competition, India’s men have enjoyed considerable success in recent years and have been forged into a team that can genuinely challenge for podium finishes at top level events. In 2015, India claimed a bronze medal in the Hockey World League, which was followed by silver at the 2016 Hockey Champions Trophy. A glorious Junior World Cup victory for their U-21 side in Raipur at the end of 2016 provided plenty of evidence that future continues to look very bright for Indian hockey. The team is captained by Manpreet Singh, who is set to make his 200th senior international appearance for his country in Bhubaneswar.

One to watch: Harmanpreet Singh. One of the rising stars of the game, Harmanpreet was an influential figure as India claimed the Uttar Pradesh Hockey Junior World Cup in , India at the end of 2016. A defender blessed with great composure who looks likely to have a long international career ahead of him. He netted seven times during India’s triumph at the Asia Cup 2017, making him joint top scorer alongside Faizal Saari of Malaysia.

England Current FIH World Ranking: 7 How they qualified: 3rd Place – Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final, London.

Notable honours: World Cup silver medallists (1986), European gold medallists (2009), European silver medallists (1997), 7x European bronze medallists (1978, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2011, 2017), Hockey World League bronze medallists (2013), 2x Commonwealth Games bronze medallists (1998 & 2014).

About the team: With a third place finish at June’s Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final in London and a bronze medal at August’s Rabo EuroHockey Championship in Amsterdam, England have every reason to feel optimistic about their chances of success at the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League Final in Bhubaneswar. Their performances in London were impressive, going through the pool phase unbeaten before losing a closely fought semi-final against eventual winners the Netherlands 2-0. A 4-1 triumph over Malaysia sealed third-place for Bobby Crutchley’s team, who then repeated the trick at the European Continental Championship by defeating Germany 4-2 in the bronze medal match. Strikes from , , Mark Gleghorne and gave England their first European medal since 2011, a clear indication that things are very much moving in the right direction for the team. Middleton, Gleghorne and Roper – co-captain alongside larger-than-life goalkeeper – have been selected in the squad that will compete in the World League Final, with Adam Dixon, Harry Martin, David Condon, and Sam Ward also being well established performers for the team. With 11 of the eighteen-player squad being aged 25 or younger, there is not surprising to find a sprinkling of exciting young talent amongst the ranks. Midfielder James Gall captained England at last year’s Junior World Cup, while 24-year-old forward recently turned heads with a stunning solo goal for Great Britain in a test match against Germany. It will be fascinating to see how they perform in Bhubaneswar.

One to watch: Barry Middleton. He may have passed on the captaincy, but attacking midfielder Middleton remains a truly world class player who is capable of unlocking defences as well as scoring crucial goals. In 2014, Middleton became England and Great Britain’s all-time caps record holder when he played his 308th international match, surpassing the mark of legendary midfielder and current assistant coach Russell Garcia. Three years later, Middleton is now on the verge of becoming the first British player to play 400 internationals, a milestone he could reach in Bhubaneswar.

Players Providing they have two goalkeepers, a team is made up of a maximum 18 players composing of 11 players on the field and up to seven substitutes. If a team has only one goalkeeper, they play a match with a maximum of 16 players.

Substitutions There are no limits on the number of substitutions, apart from during a penalty corner or video referral when substitutions are not allowed.

Match periods Matches consist of four periods of 15 minutes.

Green and yellow cards If a player is shown a green card by the umpire, he or she has a temporary suspension lasting two minutes. This means the team plays with one fewer player during this period. The time penalty kicks in when the suspended player sits on a chair next to the technical table. After the two minutes are up, the player can return to the pitch. If a player is shown a yellow card, the suspension shall be a minimum of five minutes. The Technical Officer on duty is responsible for timing the temporary suspension. Once the suspension is over, the player (or a substitute) can return to the pitch.

Penalty corner countdown clock When a penalty corner is awarded, time is stopped for 40 seconds, except in the case of re-awards or penalty corners awarded after a Video Umpire referral. In the case of a re-awarded penalty corner time will be immediately stopped but the teams will not be allowed an additional 40 seconds. The umpire will re-start play at the earliest possible opportunity, ensuring that any delay is kept to a minimum. Matches are also stopped for 40 seconds after a goal is scored, except in the case of goals awarded after a Video Umpire Referral and a Penalty Stroke.

Video umpire Each team is allowed one video umpire team referral per match. Team referrals are restricted to decisions within the 23 metre areas relating to the award (or non-award) of goals, penalty strokes and penalty corners. The on pitch umpires will ask the video umpire to study the relevant images and for his or her advice and recommendation. If the referral is successful, the team retains the right to make another team referral. If the referral is unsuccessful, the team loses the right to use the video umpire for the rest of the match. The umpires may also consult the video umpire, using their own umpire referral, if they have doubts about whether or not to award a goal. Umpires may also refer decisions to the Video Umpire when they are not convinced that they have taken, or are able to take, the correct decision relating to the award / non-award of penalty strokes. If a classification match ends in a draw a shootout competition will take place to determine the winner. In the shootout competition each team has the right to a team referral for the award (or non-award) of goals, penalty strokes and whether a shoot-out should be re-taken or not. Referrals remaining at the end of normal time are not carried over into the shootout competition.

Shootouts During the classification phase, a shootout competition will be used if the scores are equal at full time. Each team picks five players who will each take one shootout. If the teams are drawn after a series of shootouts, the winner will be decided by sudden death, ie when one team has scored one more goal than the opposing team after an equal number of shootouts. The process will be repeated in series of five shootouts for each team until a winner has been decided.

The fixtures will take place in national stadiums, week in, week out, from January to June. Following an oversubscribed and extremely competitive application process overseen by the FIH Executive Board, Belgium women and Spain men were initially named as first reserves for the event. Their involvement the inaugural Hockey Pro League was confirmed in July 2017 following the withdrawal of the women and men of India. The Hockey Pro League name was selected as it captured the entertainment-focused nature of the competition. Using the word ‘Pro’, this highly positive and upbeat message indicates it will feature the very best in the sport - ‘the pros’. It is also indicative of the increased professionalism that fans will start to see coming into the League. Speaking about this news, FIH CEO Jason McCracken said: “This competition is a game-changer”, said FIH CEO Jason McCracken. “Whilst World Tours and single venue International Leagues are played regularly, this is arguably the first of its kind, with national teams playing one-off matches both home and away in venues across the world over six months each year. The Hockey Pro League has been four years in the making and follows an excessive consultation and evaluation process.” He continued: “We strongly believe that this new competition will fuel the growth of our sport for many years to come, significantly increasing revenues for hockey. As a result it will become a professional sport, making it a career choice for athletes who will be given the opportunity to perform in big, bold, packed and loud venues both in their homeland and overseas. It will also allow fans to engage with more world-class hockey more often, whether on TV or live at their national venue. We now look forward to working on delivering a truly exceptional League whilst also ensuring we raise the standard and profile of our other international competitions across all levels of the sport.” FIH President, Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra added: “The Hockey Pro League represents the first major milestone for the Hockey Revolution. It embodies everything our 10-year strategy aims to achieve – making hockey a global game that inspires the next generation. Whilst only nine teams have been selected for each League, the quality of information and enthusiasm shown by those who missed out indicate that our sport is developing in an extremely positive way, which clearly shows that hockey has an exciting future ahead.” For more information about the Hockey Pro League, check out the event Q&A by clicking here.
