Apparently Danny Kerry, England Hockey’s performance director, was made aware of Argentina’s extra outfield player when the match remained scoreless. With world ranking points at stake – England are the world No 4 side – England Hockey decided to lodge a protest. The International Hockey Federation reviewed the terms and interviewed both teams after viewing relevant video footage. Under FIH rules, it was decided that the result would stand after the incident was deemed “unintentional”, though Argentina’s captain will be banned for one match. Investec London Cup 2014 England wins for our Men’s and Ladies’ teams. Reports from England Hockey: For the Men’s team this was the latest of several recent encounters between the two sides, and the first major final being held at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It was also a replay of the final pool game where England ran out convincing 4-1 victors. England put on an impressive start, as early on Adam Dixon attacked the Ireland baseline before pushing the ball across goal for Alastair Brogdon to tuck away and give England an early lead. This was the cue for the home team to start playing with some verve. In particular, Ashley Jackson and Captain Barry Middleton were showing some magical skills that drew cheers from the enthusiastic crowd. With the midfield duo pulling the strings, England were able to fashion chances through Brogdon, Simon Mantell and Mark Gleghorne. For all England's possession though, Ireland kept their opponents at bay, thanks in no small part to fine defensive performances from Conor Harte and John Jackson. The 1-0 halftime score was a slender lead, and Ireland punished the home side early in the second half, when a blocked cross fell perfectly for Eugene Magee to smash past George Pinner and bring Ireland level. In the 49th minute England took their advantage back when a wide attack found David Condon in space and he was able to fire a shot through a crowded circle past David Harte in the Ireland goal. However, the game was far from over and, as England's defence failed to clear an awkward ball, Michael Darling capitalised and scored the equaliser to draw the scores level on 2-2 at full time. It would take a shoot-out to settle the result. England's experience came to the fore as George Pinner kept out Michael Watt then Magee, as opposed to Jackson, Middleton, Harry Martin and Mantell who were all on target, giving a relieved England crowd the result they came to see. George Pinner said of playing in goal in a shootout: “It’s fun being in goal in a shootout, you can't lose really because the pressure’s on the other players to score, so I enjoy it.” Investec London Cup Player of the Tournament and top goal-scorer Ashley Jackson said after the win: “It’s great to be on a new home ground, which hopefully we’ll be able to make into a fortress in the coming years. Thanks to all the spectators too, the support was fantastic and we hope to see everyone many more times here. It’s important to play games ahead of big tournaments and as the week went we couldn’t have asked for anything better.” 3 Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/wimbledonhc and at www.wimbledonhockey.com Investec London Cup 2014 continued England Ladies took on South Africa in the women’s Investec London Cup Final and repeated their earlier result against the southern hemisphere side winning 2-1 in both the pool stages and the final. England started strongly winning the first penalty corner of the game within 2 minutes of push back, which lead to Nicola White opening the scoring – deflecting home a low drag flick from Sam Quek. England continued to create chances with the majority coming through Alex Danson, but these chances were on the break as South Africa applied a lot of attacking pressure on the English defence. Their pressure paid off as Jade Mayne capitalised on another South Africa attack, striking the ball into the back of England’s net past goalkeeper Maddie Hinch. England were able to create a few more chances through Danson and Wood, but strong South Africa defence prevented another breakthrough. Kate Richardson-Walsh produced some strong defending of her own to keep the score line at 1-1 going into half time. Going into the second half, England again won the first penalty corner and came close through Susannah Townsend after she hit the post with a deflection of the captain’s sweep into the circle. However, South Africa continued to press and won their first penalty corner of the game in the 42nd minute that produced a superb save from Kirsty Mackay, who replaced Maddie Hinch in England’s goal at half time. Spurred on by the crowd, England created several more chances, but were unable to breakthrough South Africa’s solid defence. University of Birmingham’s Lily Owsley found a way through with six minutes left on the clock, winning a penalty corner that was slipped left to Sam Quek who slotted it home to take the lead.

  • Performance Nutrition Eat for Your Sport
Performance Nutrition Eat For Your Sport Your Sport Hockey is characterised by high intensity passages of play, mixed with low intensity activities, including standing, walking, jogging. Hockey players rely on instant sources of muscle fuel during short bursts of play. For longer phases of play, or “recovery” in between activities, your body will rely more on a mixture of fuels to support your ability to continue in the game, or practice session. Nutrition can have a significant effect on your hockey performance. Your ability to run to a ball a number of times in short bursts, stick and ball control, decision making or shot stopping are all key performance tasks that nutrition has been shown to affect. Unlike conditioning there is no “nutritional age” as such, but there will be things that are important to support your phase of development growth, as well as boost performance. Training Diet Traditionally many hockey players have focussed on improving their nutrition towards the weekend game. However, the daily demands of your busy lifestyle either from school, college or work as well, as training, will limit your hockey performance practice if you don’t get your nutrition consistently right. Hockey players require a variety of foods and should aim to include: Fruits and green vegetables every day in any form e.g. cooked separately or on pizza toppings Breads and cereals – pasta, brown rice, oats, potatoes, noodles, lentils, couscous Low fat dairy products – including milk, yogurt and cheese Lean meat – chicken, game e.g. rabbit, pigeon, fish, eggs and other more vegetarian forms of protein such as pulses e.g.

  • Hampstead & Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter September 2021
Hampstead & Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter September 2021 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the thirty second Newsletter in the current format. It covers start of the 2021-22 season and offers a brief résumé of the summer. There are grounds for optimism given, first, the completion of the several installations at Paddington Recreation Ground and the improved facilities there, including the practice area, lighting and fencing, secondly, the establishment of the Carlton Tavern following fitting out and the tenants’ preparedness to welcome the Club, thirdly, the setting up of arrangements with Mill Hill School (with the prospect of greater use of their facilities) and, fourthly, the recent confirmation of further coaching appointments and the Club’s pursuit of England Hockey’s Talent Centre accreditation. Shaffiq Amin Tony Pereira and Chris Somes-Charlton write: On 14 August 2021, we lost a much-loved H&W Vet, Shaffiq Amin, to cancer. Shaffiq played regularly for H&W Vets from 2000-2006, after having moved across the river from Croydon to Finchley. Later, he moved back to south London but he continued to play for H&W whenever he could. He was also an enthusiastic tourer and he participated in the Vets’ tours to Temse in 2007 and nearby Beerschot, in 2008. Shaffiq is here photographed, crouching directly behind the outstretched goalkeeping pad, three places from the left 1 He started playing hockey while at Selhurst Grammar School. His skill and ability were soon recognised and he was invited to play for the London School Boys teams in the early 1970s.

We ask all spectators to wear a face covering today unless seated in the Clubhouse, and please be mindful of the volunteers on duty today directing you to the safest spots to spectate. Across the country there has been an enormous effort to get hockey up and running again but with escalating cases being reported daily in the past fortnight we must ‘raise the bar’ to do our utmost to protect you and keep the sport we love ticking over. In the ladies match visitors Wimbledon made a great start to the season at home against Swansea before losing on the road to ‘seasoned opposition’ in the form of Clifton Robinson. Holcombe started with a loss to Loughborough Students who confirmed their early season promise with a draw against Surbiton last weekend. Holcombe responded last weekend with a good win again Swansea. Two very strong squads coming up against each other today. In the men’s match, Wimbledon continue to recruit high quality players year on year rd to add to an already impressive squad that saw them finish 3 last year – losing Ed Horler was a big blow but they will fancy their chances to be in the mix come the end of the season.

  • Rebecca Holden Premier Division Play-Offs
Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter April 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the nineteenth Newsletter to take readers to the end of what has been a significantly successful season for the Club. There are two important items of news to which we need draw attention at the outset. Rebecca Holden The Club was deeply saddened to hear that Women’s 5th XI leading scorer, Rebecca had developed three large tumours growing in her left hip and “was in a lot of pain,” her father Raymond explained, adding that “It is a big six/nine months for Rebecca as we hope the tumours don’t start growing again. She will be on crutches for eight weeks after the surgery and will need to undergo intensive walking rehabilitation for six months as she will be left in a lot of pain and with a large nine inch scare across her the top of her left leg, hip and lower back.” Rebecca had been fighting the pain so she could play for the Woman’s 5th XI in which she ended the season with 11 goals to finish joint second in the Middlesex Division 1 goal scorer’s table. Ray is extremely of proud of his daughter ‘My wife, Nikki and I are so proud of this goal scoring feat considering that during the past season the tumours were growing larger and larger.’ Raymond has been so inspired by his daughter’s bravery that he has decided to take on the challenge to help raise funds for his daughter’s rehabilitation by walking 185 miles on 8 May 2017 starting from Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London, where Rebecca is being treated to Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead, where Rebecca was born in 1999.

  • News of the Carlton Tavern
Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter January 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the eighteenth in our series of Newsletters. It marks a new scheme of trying to provide more relevant news quicker by reporting during the mid-season break in the National League calendar. It may be briefer but will be followed by an end of season edition as customary, although that, too, may have less content, for hopefully obvious reasons. Executive Summary The Club is in good heart, with both first teams well placed in their Leagues, the Women seemingly able to avoid the post promotion effect and able to maintain their showing of last season as newcomers. The Men have seen the hard work of pre-season reap rewards. A new team has evolved in quick time and has enjoyed success not seen in recent seasons and are well-placed at just more than the half way stage. Up to 14 January 2017, in the London League the Men’s 2nd XI and 3rd XI are leaders in the Premier Division and Division 1, respectively. Zak Hond XI are in ninth spot in the same League Division 1. The 4th XI are in tenth position in London League Division 2. In Division 3, the 5th XI are league leaders, with nine wins and three losses, a point ahead of London Wayfarers. In Division 5, the Hammers XI are in fifth place. Division 6 has two H&W teams: the Spaniards XI are fourth and the Thirsts XI are fifth. The Vets sit top of Veterans Division One, with nine wins and three losses but the Supervets are struggling a little, being seventh of eight in Supevets Division 1, helped by a win on 7 January 2017 against Chelmsford.

  • Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Play Off News Summary April 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the Know
Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Play Off News Summary April 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This will be brief and is an attempt to record the events of last weekend rather than wait until the autumn and the next Newsletter. There are a few other items of news that can usefully be added now. MEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE FINALS For probably the best summary of Saturday’s match, we are indebted to the Ham & High Hampstead & Westminster saw their hopes of glory at the Hockey League finals weekend ended by Premier Division champions Wimbledon after a slender loss at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre. A pair of short corner goals in the first half proved decisive, despite Richard Alexander’s fourth-quarter reply, as Hampstead were to reflect upon a history-making campaign and their first appearance at the sport’s showpiece event. Hampstead made a bright start, with Michael Watt forcing a kick save from James Bailey inside the first 90 seconds, but Simon Mantell fired into the side netting at the other end for Wimbledon and saw Phil Ball’s reverse-stick effort deflected behind by David Kettle. The deadlock was broken on eight minutes, though, when the Premier Division champions won the first penalty corner of the match and Mantell drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. Kwan Browne tried to respond for Hampstead with a run from deep, but Wimbledon’s defence held firm to deny entry into the D with a good stick tackle and a long pass then found Chris Gregg on the left, with his reverse-stick drive parried by the pads of Kettle.
