Filip De Rycke1 Sint-Janscentrum in ’s-Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands) A Particle of Amazement Which Will Become the Essence of Eternity. The Meaning of Friendship in the Life and Thought of Saint John Paul II Summary Friendships with the most various kinds of people played an important role in the life of Saint John Paul II. In his reflections on friendship, the pope elaborates Thomistic categories from his personalist perspective. According to Pope Wojtyła, friendship is a specific form of chaste love. Among the friends, it works out a deep union that is an image of the triune God and an anticipation of the everlasting communion of the saints. Keywords: love, chastity, Aquinas, communio personarum Streszczenie Cząstka zdumienia, która stanie się esencją wieczności. Znaczenie przyjaźni w życiu i myśli świętego Jana Pawła II Przyjaźnie z ludźmi odegrały ważną rolę w życiu świętego Jana Pawła II. Słowa kluczowe: miłość, czystość, Akwinata, communio personarum 1 P. • The Catholic Church and Technological Progress: Past, Present, and Future
religions Article The Catholic Church and Technological Progress: Past, Present, and Future Brian Patrick Green School of Engineering and Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053, USA; [email protected] Academic Editor: Noreen Herzfeld Received: 18 February 2017; Accepted: 17 May 2017; Published: 1 June 2017 Abstract: Over 2000 years the Catholic Church has slowly developed a posture towards technology which is predominantly techno-optimist and techno-progressive, and yet the Church does not have this reputation today. Concomitantly, Church institutions and individuals have made crucial contributions to the advance of science and technology, yet despite this practical effort to better human development, Christian theology has been remarkably uninterested in the subject of technology. This lack of interest is no longer tenable; scholars of religion and theologians should seriously engage technology because it is empowering humanity in ways that were previously reserved only for gods. This blind spot has not only hampered the Church’s ability to understand itself and our world, but also impeded the ability of the Church to fulfill its mission. Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical Laudato Si has begun to address this neglect, but is best understood in the context of Christian history, not only as written, but more so as practiced. Keywords: Catholic; Christian; history; technology; theology; ethics; Laudato Si; Pope Francis 1. Introduction Tertullian, criticizing the role of philosophy in religion, famously asked “What has Athens to do with Jerusalem (Tertullian 1914, chp. 7)?” While his attitude might find sympathy amongst some religious fundamentalists, for most of history it has been anathema to the majority Christian scholars and theologians.
