Calgary, AB We thank Erin O’Toole for calling out on the Government of Canada to boycott the Beijing Olympics in China due to the Genocide of Uyghurs Muslims The Canadian Muslim Research Think Tank thanks the Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada Erin O’Toole and his Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Chong for calling on the Government of Canada to boycott the Beijing Olympics in China and its relocation to a new host country. We also thank O’Toole for recognising the genocide going on in Xinjiang and China’s human rights violations against the Uyghurs Muslims in the Turkestan occupied part of the country. In its World Report 2021, Human Rights Watch has detailed “In Xinjiang, Turkic Muslims continue to be arbitrarily detained on the basis of their identity, while others are subjected to forced labor, mass surveillance, and political indoctrination.” A separate investigation carried out by Buzzfeed News noted there have been at least 260 concentration camps built in the last three years which held millions of Uyghur Muslims and forced them to denounce their Islamic faith and pledge allegiance to the Chinese Communist Party. It is estimated that for the past six years, at least 1.3 million Uyghur Muslims have been through these detention camps annually under the garb of “vocational training” or “language training program.” Human rights groups say the Chinese government has gradually stripped away religious and other freedoms of the Uyghurs, culminating in an oppressive system of mass surveillance, detention, indoctrination, and even forced sterilisation.

DEWAR Abstract: This article argues that the lines separating different modes of thought on the centre-left of the political spectrum—liberalism, social democracy, and socialism, broadly speaking—are permeable, and that they share many features in common. The example of Tom Kent illustrates the argument. A leading adviser to Lester B. Pearson and the Liberal Party from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, Kent argued for expanding social security in a way that had a number of affinities with social democracy. In his paper for the Study Conference on National Problems in 1960, where he set out his philosophy of social security, and in his actions as an adviser to the Pearson government, he supported social assis- tance, universal contributory pensions, and national, comprehensive medical insurance. In close asso- ciation with his philosophy, he also believed that political parties were instruments of policy-making.   • The NDP's Approach to Constitutional Issues Has Not Been Electorally

Paper prepared for the Annual Meetings of the Canadian Political Science Association, June 2004, Winnipeg The federal New Democratic Party experienced a dramatic electoral decline in the 1990s from which it has not yet recovered. Along with difficulties managing provincial economies, the NDP was wounded by Canada’s constitutional debates. The NDP has historically struggled to present a distinctive social democratic approach to Canada’s constitution. Like its forerunner, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), the NDP has supported a liberal, (English-Canadian) nation-building approach that fits comfortably within the mainstream of Canadian political thought. At the same time, the party has prioritized economic and social polices rather than seriously addressing issues such as the deepening of democracy or the recognition of national or regional identities. Travelling without a roadmap, the constitutional debates of the 80s and 90s proved to be a veritable minefield for the NDP. Through three rounds of mega- constitutional debate (1980-82, 1987-1990, 1991-1992), the federal party leadership supported the constitutional priorities of the federal government of the day, only to be torn by disagreements from within. This paper will argue that the NDP’s division, lack of direction and confusion over constitution issues can be traced back to longstanding weaknesses in the party’s social democratic theory and strategy. First of all, the CCF- NDP embraced rather than challenged the parameters and institutions of liberal democracy.

  • Dr. Irwin Cotler, MP
    Dr. Irwin Cotler, MP Irwin Cotler, PC, OC, MP, Ph.D. (born May 8, 1940) was Canada's Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 2003 until the Liberal government of Paul Martin lost power following the 2006 federal election. He was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons for the constituency of Mount Royal in a by-election in November 1999, winning over 91% of votes cast. He was sworn into Cabinet on December 12, 2003. The son of a lawyer, he was born in Montreal, Quebec, studied at McGill University there (receiving a BA in 1961 and a law degree three years later) and then continued his education at Yale University. For a short period, he worked with federal Minister of Justice John Turner. Cotler was a professor of law at McGill University and the director of its Human Rights Program from 1973 until his election as a Member of Parliament in 1999 for the Liberal Party of Canada. He has also been a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Yale Law School and is the recipient of five honorary doctorates. SITUATION Since March 2020, James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN) and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN), have made requests to Canada for funding support for a First Nations led and managed solution to address our urgent and emergency need for Personal Protective Equipment in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities in the face of COVID-19. We have engaged exhaustive correspondence and communications about these proposals with: Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Hon. Chrystia Freeland, Hon. Marc Miller, Mr. Mike Burton, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, and ISC Regional officials Jocelyn Andrews, Rob Harvey and Bonnie Rushowick. Despite extensive consultations and discussions with the department and minister’s office, we have experienced significant delays and denials from Canada to support these urgently needed and emergency proposals. This has been well documented since May, with particular reference to ‘Indigenous Services Moving Goalposts on First Nations PPE’, CBC News, September 11, 2020 (https://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/first-nations-ppe-proposal-1.5721249). The failed funding and departmental dysfunction have resulted in significant outbreaks which are occurring across our regions. By Canada’s own admission on November 29, COVID-19 is now four times (4x) worse in First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities than during the first wave which occurred from March through May 2020.
