This largely coincides with the Eastern Jin dynasty (317-420), the first southern dynasty, whose court was founded south of the Yangzi River with the help of a small group of aristocratic families after the territorial loss of the north to invading tribes. Previous scholarship tends to characterize this period as a moment in history when the cultural elite turned inwardly toward an esoteric metaphysical discourse concerned with self- discovery. While not entirely false, this view is misleading at least in the sense that it overlooks the degree to which émigré elites of the Eastern Jin turned toward each other, through their shared interest in the discourse of the "arcane" (xuan), here referring to the mystical Way that was at once spoken of by the Taoist philosophical texts preserved from antiquity and by the Buddhist sutras being translated in China from India and Central Asia, and sought to rebuild a sense of community together in the absence of their ancestral heartland. I argue that the elite social gatherings we read about in works like the Shishuo xinyu 世說新語 (New Account of Tales of the World) and literary writings produced at those gatherings, such as the poems composed by various participants at the famous gathering at Lanting in 353, and other social writings preserved in Buddhist anthologies and personal literary collections reveal a common trope during this period of being joined together as a community through individual absorption in a shared mystical iii understanding of the ineffable Way, of the great men of the past, and of the teachings of the Buddha. I have benefitted over the past several years from my mentors, teachers, colleagues, and friends, to all of whom I owe an enormous debt of gratitude. One of the key assumptions of this dissertation is that “communities” are formed largely in the mind. In my mind, the sense of pride that has come with belonging to this community is one of the main forces that has sustained me in writing these chapters. The person to whom I surely owe the greatest thanks is my primary advisor and mentor, Xiaofei Tian. As I worked on chapters, Professor Tian was extremely generous with her time, enthusiastic with her comments, constructively unsparing with her criticisms, and always patient with me. The energy with which she approaches Chinese literature from all eras past and present is contagious, as anyone who has taken her seminars knows. If I have succeeded at all in breathing new life into any of the texts examined here, it is on account of her guidance. The mistakes that crept in are my own. I also owe thanks to my other two committee members, Stephen Owen and James Robson. They have both, at different times, stepped in with insightful comments, inspiring conversations, and invaluable feedback—not to mention all that I have learned from them in seminars during my first years at Harvard. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news.     Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

Where had the Zhuan Xu People gone? Abstract: Shanhaijing (Classic of Mountains and Seas) records many ancient groups of people in Neolithic China. The five biggest were: Zhuan Xu, Di Jun, Huang Di, Yan Di and Shao Hao. These were not only the names of individuals, but also the names of groups who regarded them as common male ancestors. These groups used to live in the Pamirs Plateau, later spread to other places of China and built their unique ancient cultures during the Neolithic Age. Shanhaijing reveals Zhuan Xu’s offspring lived near the Tibetan Plateau in their early time. They were the first who entered the Tibetan Plateau, but almost perished due to the great environment changes, later moved to the south. Some of them entered the Sichuan Basin and became the founders of Sanxingdui Culture. Some of them even moved to the south of the Tibetan Plateau, living near the sea. Modern archaeological discoveries have revealed the authenticity of Shanhaijing ’s records. Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.

Nachdem Wang Xizhi das Gouverneursamt von Jiangxi und Fujian abgegeben hatte, fiel diese Region in die Hände von Yu Bing 庾冰 (296-344) und zusammen mit Yu Yi dominierte der Yu-Clan mit seinem Einfluss die Nation. Yu Yi bestimmte 345 auf dem Totenbett Yu Yuanzhi 庾爰之 (ca. 325-360) als Nachfolger. Ministerpräsident He Chong zog jedoch Huan Wen für das Amt vor, um den immer mächtiger werdenden Yu-Clan, einzudämmen. Huan Wen hegte von jung auf grandiose Pläne und war genial in der Zivilregierung. 346 forderte er von der Regierung die Einwilligung zum Angriff gegen Sichuan und befahl ohne Einwilligung der Regierung eigenmächtig die Entsendung von Truppen. Im Jahr 347 vernichtete Huan Wen in kurzer Zeit das Land Cheng-Han und verleibte die gesamte Provinz Sichuan der östlichen Jin ein. Die Regierung machte Huan Wen zum General der Westprovinzen und seine Macht erstreckte sich nun weit über den Staat. Der schwache Kaiser Mudi 穆帝 (343-361) traute sich nicht, Huan Wen entgegenzutreten. Aber Ministerpräsident Sima Yu ernannte absichtlich dessen Rivalen Yin Hao zum Gouverneur von Yangzhou. Yin Hao hatte unter Yu Liang zusammen mit Wang Xizhi als Stabsoffizier gedient, führte später ein zurückgezogenes Leben und lehnte lange Anfragen für den Beamtendienst ab.

As one of the earliest stringed musical instruments in China, the qin has occupied a unique status in Chinese cultural history. It has been played since ancient times, and has traditionally been favored by Chinese scholars and literati as an instrument of great subtlety and refinement. This dissertation focuses on the period of the Song because it was during this period that the literati developed as a class and started to indulge themselves in various cultural and artistic pursuits, and record their experiences in literary compositions as part of their self-fashioning. Among these cultural pursuits, the qin playing was an important one. Although there have been several academic works on the qin, most of them focus on the musical aspects of the instrument. My project aims to reorient the perspective on the qin by revealing its close relationship and interaction with the literati class from a series of ii historical and literary approaches. During the Song, the qin was mentioned in a multiplicity of literary texts, and associated with a plethora of renowned literary figures.
