Vehicle Initial Quality in Japan Has Steadily Improved, but Satisfaction Remains Stagnant, J.D. Power Finds Honda Ranks Highest for Initial Quality for First Time TOKYO: 19 Aug. 2020 — While new-vehicle owners report fewer problems overall with their new vehicle this year and initial vehicle quality has further improved, more problems are reported in two areas than in previous years, according to the J.D. Power 2020 Japan Initial Quality StudySM (IQS), released today. “Initial vehicle quality in Japan has clearly improved due to efforts by every automobile manufacturer,” said Koichi Urayama, director of the automotive division at J.D. Power. “Despite those efforts, however, there’s still work to be done because customer satisfaction has not increased since 2014. It is critical that manufacturers find ways to decrease the number of reported problems with safety features and the advanced technology-related functions. Both of these areas represent emerging quality issues, and such improvements will not only increase initial quality satisfaction among current owners but also among those who switch from other brands. Presenting the market with solutions to these challenges will be the first step toward a competitive advantage strategy.” The study, now in its 10th year, examines problems experienced by owners of new 2020 model-year vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Following are some key findings of the 2020 study: The fewest number of problems are reported since the study’s redesign in 2014: Initial quality in 2020 averages 60 PP100.

Vehicle Dependability in Japan Improves from 2019, J.D. Power Finds Daihatsu Ranks Highest among All Brands TOKYO: 21 Oct. 2020 — Overall vehicle dependability in Japan has improved year over year, as the number of defects and malfunction problems have decreased, according to the J.D. Power 2020 Japan Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS), released today. “Overall vehicle dependability has improved this year compared to last year,” said Koichi Urayama, senior director of the automotive division at J.D. Power Japan. “However, since 2015 when the VDS was inaugurated in Japan, design-related problems have been more frequently reported in the ACEN category. These problems include user-friendliness and ease of use, indicating improvements need to be made in these areas. Additionally, in order to increase loyalty, manufacturers need to continue their efforts toward improving and maintaining quality to develop long-lasting customer satisfaction.” The study, now in its sixth year, measures problems experienced by original owners of vehicles after 37 to 54 months of ownership. The study examines 177 problem symptoms across eight categories: vehicle exterior; driving experience; features/controls/displays (FCD); audio/communication/entertainment/navigation (ACEN); seats; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); vehicle interior; and engine/ transmission. Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Following are some of the key findings of the 2020 study: • Vehicle dependability improves by 10 PP100: The overall industry average for vehicle dependability in 2020 decreases year over year by 10 PP100 to 62 PP100. The largest improvement is in the engine/transmission category (-2.4 PP100), specifically for automatic engine shut down/restart/re-engagement problems (-0.6 PP100) and automatic transmission–hesitation/shifts at wrong times (-0.4 PP100).

J.D. Power Reports: Japanese Brands Top List of Most Dependability Vehicles in Japan Lexus Ranks Highest in Vehicle Dependability among All Nameplates in Japan; Nissan Cube, Suzuki Alto and Toyota SAI and Alphard Rank Highest in Their Segments TOKYO: 21 October 2015 ― Japanese automakers top the list of the brands with the most dependable vehicles in Japan, and Japanese models rank highest in each segment, according to the inaugural J.D. Power 2015 Japan Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) released today. The inaugural study measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of vehicles after 37-54 months of ownership. The study examines 177 problem symptoms across eight categories: vehicle exterior; driving experience; features/ controls/ displays (FCD); audio/ communication/ entertainment/ navigation (ACEN); heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); seats; vehicle interior; and engine/ transmission. Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Lexus ranks nameplates with a score of 54 PP100, followed by Daihatsu (66 PP100) and Honda, Mitsubishi and Toyota in a tie (69 PP100 each). The overall vehicle dependability score averages 72 PP100. Toyota has two models that rank highest in their segment: SAI in the midsize segment and the Alphard in the minivan segment. The Nissan Cube ranks highest in the compact segment and the Suzuki Alto ranks highest in the mini-car segment. “The Japanese automakers have long focused on build high-quality, dependable vehicles, and that is evident in the low number of problems owners of those vehicles are reporting,” said Atsushi Kawahashi, senior director of the Japan automotive practice at J.D.
