VIIMSI (EST) A SMART PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK (SPC) USE CASE STUDY Location: Estonia, Harju County, Viimsi Parish, Lubja-Pärtlepõllu intersection Contact person (client): Imre Saar, senior transport specialist of Viimsi Parish Government Road conditions: 1 + 1 public tarmac road without a safety island, mixed traffic Number of SPC installed: 1 Time from idea to implementation: 26.08.2020 - 29.10.2020 - 8 weeks (now half less) Customer wishes: improvement of pedestrian safety, differentiation of trucks, traffic statistics INTRODUCTION The Lubja - Pärtlepõllu intersection underwent reconstruction in the autumn in connection with the construction of a nursing home and a new road. At the end of October, the domestic company Bercman's Smart Crosswalk (SPC) was installed at the intersection, and now the road crossing between the kindergarten and the new nursing home is much safer.1 The new technological solution is not only a means of alerting road users by means of flashing lights and speakers, but also an intelligent traffic management system that measures and transmits traffic data. The Smart Pedestrian Crosswalk (SPC) installed at Viimsi. LOCATION The SPC is located in a place with an increased traffic risk - between the elderly retirement home and the kindergarten. According to the General Statistics of the Estonian Road Administration, 26% of pedestrian accidents involving minors and 24% of people over the age of 65 occurred in 2019.2 These statistics confirm that this pedestrian crossing and its location are of great importance and need to be made safer by modern intelligent transport systems. Viimsi pedestrian crossing map with strategically important objects and identification areas.3 WORKING PRINCIPLE SPC uses high-definition cameras aimed across the Lubja Road to detect pedestrians and vehicles on the pedestrian crossings.

There are many churches and chapels that are of interest in the eastern part of Harju County, which all pilgrims should take a look at. The routes are recommended, and largely run away from major highways, allowing visitors the enjoyment of Harjumaa’s beautiful sights, all of its natural and cultural sights and its fishing villages and new settlements, life on mainland and life on small islands. The choice of transport is up to the pilgrim. You can travel on foot or by bicycle. There are places that you can reach by train. The most convenient option is to travel by car, but the areas around the capital have a good network of cycle and pedestrian tracks which is excellent for travelling by bicycle. PILGRIMAGE ROUTES IN EAST HARJUMAA ROUTE Tallinn-Viru Square - Viimsi Peninsula - Maardu - Jõelähtme Municipality - Kuusalu Town - Leesi & Juminda Peninsula - Loksa City - Viinistu Village - Raasiku Town - Pikva Village - Kose Town - Jüri Town - Kostivere - Tallinn Tallinn The pilgrimage to Harjumaa starts in Tallinn, and first of all we recommend heading towards Viimsi Peninsula. You can take bus No. 1 from the bus terminal in Viru Keskus in the heart of Tallinn or go by bicycle, on foot, or by car. When you start your journey, you will first have to use Pirita Road to reach the small town of Haabneeme, and thereafter you travel towards Püünsi. If you travel by bicycle, you can use the bicycle and pedestrian track. The entire Viimsi Peninsula is covered with bicycle and pedestrian tracks and the peninsula is very safe to travel around.

  • Cup-Marked Stones in Estonia
CUP-MARKED STONES IN ESTONIA Andres Tvauri 1. INTRODUCTION The cup-marked stone is a stone that has one or several mainly round-bottomed small cup-marks with the diameter of 3–10 cm (most often 4–7 cm) and the depth of 0.5–2 cm chipped into it. In exceptional cases the cup-marks can also be with a pointed or oval bottom. The cup-marked stones differ from offering stones, used until the past and even this century, which sometimes have one or two large offering pits. In the present research two main problems concerning the cup- marked stones will be discussed: when were the marks made on the stones, and why. As source material, lists of archaeological sites in the archives of the National Board of Antiquities of Estonia and on the data in the topographical archives of the Department of Ar- chaeology of the Institute of History have been used. 2. HISTORY OF RESEARCH The first to mention the cup-marked stones in the Estonian printed sources was J. B. Holzmayer, the teacher at Kuressaare Gymna- sium, in 1873. At that time the cup-marked stones in Estonia, as well as in the neighbouring Finland and Sweden were classified under the concept of “offering stones”. So, Holzmayer in his book Osiliana (1873), a work about the popular culture of Saaremaa, wrote about the Tumala “offering stone” with cup-marks at Pöide, comparing it with similar stones in Sweden. The first person to write in Estonian about the “offering stones”, with cup-marks was the school teacher and amateur archaeologist Jaan Jung (1835–1900).
