01503 263206 NEWS FROM THE EAST LOOE TOWN TRUST

FLOOD DEFENCES: The Trust strongly supports the proposals set out recently by the Harbour Commissioners, Environment Agency and Council. We have two particular interests. A number of the buildings which we are required to maintain are old and listed. Protecting them from further deterioration is vital. Equally importantly, the quality of bathing water is a continuing issue for the town and the proposed extension of the banjo pier would make a significant difference by diverting river water further out to sea so that it does not mix with bathing water immediately off the beach. THE MUSEUM: Congratulations and warm thanks to the volunteers who have worked tirelessly throughout the winter months to give the museum a major facelift for its opening on 3rd April. This is part of the effort to further widen its appeal, especially to young people. The Trust is pleased to have been able to increase its funding of the museum this year. We and the Museum Management Committee are also grateful for a substantial grant from Viridor for improved lighting, which will permit much better presentation of displays. RUBBISH: has now decided to discontinue the collection of rubbish from bins on privately owned land even though the public have unrestricted access to it. This is on top of a decision a couple of years ago to charge the Trust for the removal of the tons of litter coming from the beach and seafront (even though our staff collect and deliver it all to a loading point) - at a cost to us of some £8,500 per year. The latest decision is to be implemented by the end of March, so existing bins in the Rose Garden and on the Wishing Well site will be removed. The Council is said to be increasing the number/capacity of bins on the streets. ST PIRAN’S DAY: We were pleased to come to the rescue when it looked as if the celebrations arranged by the Looe Old Cornwall Society were in danger of being rained off. At short notice we were able to make the Guildhall available, free of charge, to the delight especially of the many participating schoolchildren. Their enthusiasm and flag waving would have lifted the hearts of all good Cornish folk, born or adopted. John Warne and Fellow Trustees

After a winter of ergos followed by more ergos, we have the first race under our belts. Again a fantastic showing from Looe as four crews participated in the much-loved Three Rivers race, with Looe achieving cracking results again. Ladies’ A finishing 7th and Ladies’ B 32nd from 73 crews. Looe Men’s A finished a superb 2nd behind Falmouth, and Men’s B crew 16th from 80 crews. All those miles on the ergos really paying off! With the World Championships in The Scillies around the corner lots of hard work has been going on behind the scenes. This year we will be taking six crews, three men's and three ladies’. Two of our wooden gigs, Samphire and Talisman, have had complete MOTs in preparation for The Scillies. Stripping, sanding, painting and varnishing takes a lot of hours on two 32 feet gigs, but the hard work has paid off and the boats look splendid. Special mention to Lee who organised and motivated his minions, and to Lucy for supplying donuts! Also a very big thank you to Yaron Peled of Tenderway Farm, who let us store the gigs there while the work was carried out. The extra room was a massive help. Looking ahead to another busy season, our regatta is on June 10th. We will also be running Learn to Row for anyone who fancies giving it a go. After the winter break, it’s all systems go with all the dinghies back on the sea front. A very busy registration evening saw over 40 boats entered on the one night. The largest fleet will be the Lasers with 16 signed up already, the most the club has ever known. Once again the racing will consist of Mirrors, Redwings, Enterprise and Lasers on Saturday afternoons to start with and then on Thursday evenings as well when light permits, from mid April. A magnificent fleet of 32 boats lined up at the start line for the first race in a very light breeze which unfortunately died completely after the start leaving most of the fleet becalmed. Eventually the race team were forced to abandon the race with most competitors not completing the first beat. The safety boats were busy towing quite a lot back to the harbour. Only winners were the rugby followers who got back to the clubhouse in time to see all of England's win over Scotland before enjoying the first race supper and music later in the evening.

LOOE LIFEBOATS - A busy start to the year

RECENT SHOUT: 4th March: 12.29pm the Atlantic 85B-894, Sheila and Dennis Tongue II and the D ClassD-741 Ollie Naismith were launched following reports of a female cut off by the tide at Portwrinkle. Skippers can book a free On Board Inspection of their vessel or attend one of our free Lifejacket Clinics and learn how to choose, maintain and wear a lifejacket. Find out more at www.looelifeboats.co.uk/communitysafety.html. 2017 AGM: Looe Lifeboats committee changes: Chairman Alan Newman stood down and Ann Watson was elected as the new Chair. Laurie Watson stood down from his dual role of Lifeboats and Fund Raising Press Officer after 8 diligent years in the job. This role has now been split and Chris Roy was elected as Fund Raising Press Officer. The position of Lifeboats Press Officer, covering operational reporting, has been filled by Ian Foster. LOOE MUSEUM NEWS

Lots of people ask what we do in the winter whilst the Museum is shut. We have had an exceptionally busy time, and the Museum is probably longing for the start of the season for some peace and quiet!

We have now cleaned, relabelled and recorded all of the artefacts in the Museum collection, as well as many other gems that we have found in various cupboards which we hope to use in the future. We are now in the process of photographing every item so it can be entered on our Modes Computer which is part of our recording procedures. The new LED lighting and heating, paid for by a generous grant awarded by Viridor, has now been installed, and we are very grateful to Tony Gascoyne for all his hard work on the electrics. In the next few weeks we will be putting in new notices in cabinets and on walls as part of our updating programme. Kath Wilson, of One Offs Stained Glass, has very kindly given us two beautifully crafted panels of glass depicting smugglers and pirates, and we have incorporated these into our new desk which now looks very smart indeed. We are now just about ready for opening!

The coffee mornings and afternoons, which are part of the Living Archive project, have been a great success. It has been a privilege to share so many memories of Looe with so many different people. I would like to thank all of the people who came to visit us in the New Guildhall to look at our photos and talk to us, and we will be continuing the project in November 2017. The collected memories have been digitised and will be used in the Museum as part of the collection. If you are unable to come into the New Guildhall, I am more than happy to come and speak to you in your home; please contact the East Looe Town Trust (ELTT) on 01503 263709 and leave a message for me.

None of this would have happened without some fantastic volunteers who have worked so hard and contributed so much to the Museum, and they have been so supportive of both David Fuller and me. The Trustees of ELTT have also given us enormous support, for which we are very grateful. Special thanks must go to Judy, Anona, Anthony, Steve, Tony, Karin, Connie (great cakes!), Penny, Mandy, Margaret, David, Chris, Deborah, Carol and Kim, for being such fun to work with and for all their very hard work.

We will be having a Grand Opening on April 3rd, and all are very welcome to come and have a look round the Museum. If you are interested in volunteering for us please let us know, as we are always looking for new people, young and old, to come and help us.

LOOE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BRANCH NEWS: The Looe RBL annual dinner was held at the Rivercroft Hotel on 17th February. This was well patronised and, as ever, the Rivercroft produced a wonderful meal. A big thank you to the owner and staff.

On 4th March a ‘Swing Night’ was held in the Portbyhan Hotel on behalf of the Poppy Appeal. The event, a singer, dancing, an auction and a raffle was organised by our secretary, Martin Robinson, who did a fantastic job and the night was enjoyed by one and all. £510 was raised for the Appeal. We thank the Portbyhan Hotel for being such good hosts and supporting our charity work. On Saturday 6th May at 7.30pm a charity auction for the Poppy Appeal will be held in the Salutation Inn, Fore Street, East Looe. One of the lots is three months free parking on the Quay Car Park, courtesy of the Looe Harbour Commission. If you can donate an auction item, please contact Martin Robinson on 07970 945594 or Louis Portman on 01503 598432. In addition to the auction, musical entertainment will be provided by thePolperro Wreckers with their mixture of Cornish, Shanty, Folk, and Sixties numbers. Also, during the day of 6th May, the branch will be in attendance at the West Looe May Fayre, in West Looe Square. Please come along and say hello to us, and maybe take a photograph, or selfie, with our Poppy Man.

LEST WE FORGET: RAF Sgt Leonard Sweett originated from but, in 1941, married Hilda Soady whose family lived in Chapel Ground, West Looe. Leonard was a flight-engineer in 288 Squadron which flew Sunderland flying boats. In August 1942 he was hand-picked by the Squadron CO, Wing Commander Thomas Moseley, for a special mission. At 1300 hours on 25th August they took off from RAF Invergordon, with a special passenger on board: Prince George, The Duke of Kent, the King’s younger brother. Also on board were the Duke’s staff and Wing Commander Mosley, an expert in navigation. The aircraft captain was Flight Lieutenant Goven who was, reputably, the most experienced Sunderland pilot in the RAF. The Duke was making a visit to Reykjavic, Icleland, as part of his official duties as an RAF Air Commodore. The plan was to fly up the east coast of Scotland to John O’ Groats and then turn NW and head directly across the sea to Iceland. It was overcast and the pilot would have had to fly by navigational instruments, It appears that a fatal error was made and the aircraft drifted inland and crashed into an outcrop known locally as the Eagles Rock. The resultant explosion instantly extinguished the lives of all on board save one, the tail gunner, Sgt Andrew Jack, who, complete with the tail-turret, was hurled clear from the wreck. Semiconscious, Jack extricated himself from the wreckage and wandered off in in a daze. He was eventually found 22 hours later. The crash has, over the years, raised many conspiracy theories, but was officially put down to pilot error. This seems somewhat unfair considering the experience of the crew. Modern experts conclude that such accidents were to be expected, considering the technology of the time. On September 14th the King, George VI, visited the spot where his brother had been killed. Sgt Leonard Sweett was laid to rest in West Looe Cemetery. The next time you pass that way spend a few minutes to pay your respects to Sergeant Sweett (2nd row on the right, four graves in) and the other 12 WW1 and WW2 servicemen laid to rest in the cemetery.

We are a friendly group who meet on a Monday evening, 7:30pm at the Riverside Chapel in West Looe. The choir welcomes new members across all voices, particularly male voices; we are also looking for an accompanist. We are one of the few remaining mixed voices choirs in the area, however we are very short of male voices which seems to be the situation with many mixed voice choirs. We are also surrounded by many male voice choirs which means the men are spread very thinly! Not to be disheartened we sing on and try to be optimistic that new members will join our ranks. As a community group the choir focusses much of its singing on raising money for local charities. Last year was a bumper year with the choir raising £540 which was shared between a variety of good causes including Penhaligon’s Friends, British Legion and local Cub, Scout and Brownies packs. In addition to this we sang at Looe Life Boat Station – all proceeds going to the station. 1ST LOOE SEA SCOUTS At the end of January, Looe Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were joined by Pelynt Beavers and Cubs for a sleep-over at Plymouth Aquarium – a night filled with fun and games, learning all about the aquarium’s residents and sleeping next to the sharks. Since then the group has been busy, with all sections working towards various badges. Here’s just a small sample of what we’ve been learning about – Diwali, making models, taking part in team-building games, making pancakes, attending district events, learning first aid and many more activities. The children have also been to both Plymouth and Pelynt pantomimes. As a group, we are lucky to be supported by many organisations in the town, but a huge thank you must be said to West Looe Town Trust, who last year paid for a major refurbishment to our Scout hut. We are now warm and cosy in our amazing new building with a new kitchen and toilet facilities. Anyone wishing to help the group in any section, or has children who would like to become a member of the group please contact Phil Thorn 01503 264468. © Looe Community News December 2013 - January 2014

LOOE MUSIC FESTIVAL SPRING REPORT The first part of 2017 has been occupied with re-structuring the LMF charity and appointing new trustees. This has provided much needed extra capacity within the management team to aid the day-to-day running of our growing charity, and delivery of our events and projects. Just as 2016 ended on high, receiving the accolade of Cornwall’s Best Cultural Tourism Event/Festival at the Cornwall Tourism Awards, LMF began 2017 with silver in the same category at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards – recognising the impact of the event on cultural tourism in our region and the south west. March has seen the charity release its accommodation provider deals, and we hope to engage numerous accommodation parks within the local area to allow us to offer our customers the complete package when booking their festival visit. With visitors now staying for up to seven days, highlighting where people can stay, what they can do and widening the shuttle bus route is a priority. The LMF charity aims, once again, to welcome new visitors to the town during Looe Music Festival and to continue to work with renowned organisations such as BBC Music, Marshall Amplification and Brewery, to showcase Looe as a spectacular cultural destination. LMF continues to design and deliver numerous other award-winning Arts projects whilst also supporting dozens of local groups. The team would like to thank local residents, businesses and volunteers for their continued support, which contributes to the delivery and success of the festival. We look forward to this year’s event and bringing Lulu to Looe.
