SOUTH EAST WALKING FESTIVAL 2017

I have had people asking me if the Walking Festival will be going ahead this year, what with me not being in Looe to organise it. The answer is YES, the dates being the 16th to the 23rd of September. I am not sure how many walks I am going to be able to do, as I am now working for Visit Cornwall in , but rest assured there will be a nice mixture of walks around the area, both long and short, and middleish! The Festival will start with the now traditional walk to the Duloe Beer and Cider Festival on Saturday 16th September, times to be confirmed, and during the following week I already have pencilled in a walk around Quethiock, Caradon Hill and a foraging walk near .

I have missed being in Looe and not bumping into people on the streets or answering your questions in the TIC, so it would be great to see some of you on a walk or two.

Boules, BBQ and Picnic: A metallic clinking broke through the lapping waves and the languid cries of the gulls on 16th June as 20 members of the Looe Boat Owners Association took part in a boules competition on East Looe Beach. Under the firm stewardship of Wendy and Steve Smith (to whom go grateful thanks), the first phase of competition ended in a tense play-off final, won in the end by Wendy Smith (no fix there then!).

The company then paused to enjoy a BBQ under sunny skies, where Chris Roy took the prize for the most exotic BBQ and Laurie Watson for the most smoke. The tournament then resumed with an all-in 18 ball match, carried off in the end by the old master Laurie Watson.

More beach events are planned later this year, watch this space for news and come along. Remember – no boat required.

Valuing Community: This is my 28th and final contribution to ‘Community News’. I moved to Looe 5 years ago, with my wife Barbara, to become minister at Riverside United Church. We have loved our time here but this summer I retire, so we shall be moving away. I thought it appropriate to reflect now on the value of community – still as important in our modern world as it ever has been. Indeed in a society where loneliness is prevalent among young and old alike, it is arguably even more important. We human beings are social animals, even the shy and retiring ones. God did not create us to live our lives alone, isolated and solitary. We are better together, supporting and helping one another. John Ortberg, an American pastor, writes, “To experience community is to know the joy of belonging, the delight of being known and being loved, the opportunity for giving and growing, the safety of finding a true home.”

Of course no community is perfect, not even Looe (or the church), but I do think we have much to be thankful for. In my experience, Looe is a community where people smile and say hello, even if they do not know you; a community where you are not just a client or a customer, but a human being; a community where people are not so busy that they have no time to pause and chat. And long may we continue to be that sort of community! Many visitors comment favourably on how friendly and welcoming people are; and I believe that is a sign of a healthy community.

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, once said “There is no such thing as a solitary Christian”. He recognised that Christians are called to be part of the church community, and that the church is called to be part of the wider community. That is why we are always pleased to welcome locals and visitors alike at Riverside. That is why we encourage our members to be involved in community beyond the church. If you have never been to Riverside, do come along and sample our community. All are welcome in this place!

Best Wishes. Rev Andrew

Since August 2014, the Chemin Neuf Community has established itself within Sclerder Abbey which was steeped in prayers for more than a century by Poor Clares and Carmelite Sisters. The Chemin Neuf Community, born in France in 1973 and founded by Father Laurent Fabre SJ, was called to Cornwall by the former Bishop of Mgr. Christopher Budd. The Chemin Neuf, a Catholic Community, is composed of members from many different walks of life (couples, singles, priests, consecrated brothers and sisters) of different Christian denominations (Catholics, Protestants, Orthodoxes).

Nowadays, whilst respecting the vocation of this “Thin place”, the Chemin Neuf has undertaken improvements to the buildings in order to welcome guests for an authentic Christian experience of prayer and community life. The grounds and gardens of the Abbey provide a peaceful atmosphere where everybody feels safe and at home. The simplicity and natural way of life brings a sense of belonging to the universal family under one God, Our Father, (the calendar of spiritual activities can be consulted on the website: www.chemin-neuf.org.uk).

This year, for the first time, the Chemin Neuf will welcome a FAMILY FESTIVAL on the theme of “Home” – “Home is a place where the heart is” on the 19th August from 10am- 10pm. This is organised in collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Plymouth, The Anglican and Churches Together Cornwall. All of this will be possible with the help of volunteers coming from different Churches, who are already working together for this day.

During the day, families will have the opportunity to spend time in the grounds of the Abbey and enjoy the numerous activities which will be available for all ages (Historical tour of the Abbey, Art and Craft, Indoor and Outdoor Activities, Sports, Spiritual Journey of the Family, etc…). In the evening there will be a Barbecue and the day will end with a worship concert and a live band. Everybody will be most welcome!

Practical information: 1.5 miles from Looe (PL13 2JD) or 12 miles from Liskeard. Nominal entrance fee: £10 for adults (15+), £20 for families (Parents +3 children) giving access to the Abbey grounds and a packed lunch. Food and drinks will be available all day; tea and coffee, cakes all day regarding a donation. Everybody is most welcome; even those having financial difficulties. Free parking on the Abbey fields, LOOE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Branch News: As usual the branch has been active in fundraising. On 24th June we were at the Guildhall for Armed Forces Day and nearly £800 was raised for the Poppy Appeal. We aim to be out fundraising on 15th August for VJ (Victory over Japan) Day. Lest We Forget: 31st July 2017 was the centenary of the start of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, or Passchendaele. This was a British attempt to reduce pressure on the Ypres Salient by capturing overlooking high ground held by the Germans. Although Ypres had no military strategic importance, it was the only Belgium city still in Allied hands and, as Britain had gone to war in aid of Belgium, it had a great symbolic significance. Once Passchendaele Ridge had been taken, the intention was to push westwards, cutting off German forces from the Belgian ports. The offensive began encouragingly but terrible summer weather slowed it down and by August it was clearly failing, descending into a battle of attrition. Further bad weather in October led to the battlefield becoming a quagmire. Passchendaele was finally captured on 6th November, by which time both sides were exhausted and further operations abandoned. It is estimated that the British suffered 310,000 casualties. We don’t know how many Looe men were involved in the battle, but from casualty lists we know of three. Pte. Cyril Ernest Prynn served with 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. They were part of the first day’s assault at 3.50am on 31st July 1917 and that morning suffered 262 casualties; Cyril was amongst those killed. His is one of the 54,895 named on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial as having no known grave. Also in 2nd Devonshire Regiment was Pte. Austen Stripp who joined in July 1917. After the initial assault the Devons repulsed German counter-attacks and then, on 16th August, they renewed the attack, suffering another 93 casualties. The battalion was moved to a ‘supposedly’ quieter part of the line where, on 9th November 1917, Austen was reported missing, later assumed to have been killed in action, on that date. He is commemorated on the Poegsteert Memorial for soldiers with no known grave. The memorial is on a sector where no major battles took place, but 11,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers are named on the memorial as missing. Pte Richard Yeo was with 6th Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, who were in the battle and on 22nd August took part in an attack across the Menin Road. Initially successful, the ‘Fog of War’ prevailed, a British tank attacked British positions only to be knocked out by German artillery and German trenches were pulverised by their own artillery. The British were forced back and the Duke of Cornwall’s were withdrawn from the line on 24th August, having suffered 350 casualties, including the seriously wounded Richard Yeo. He was pensioned out of the army and died, as a result of his wounds, in 1920. He was buried in West Looe Cemetery and 200 townspeople and ex-servicemen attended his funeral. It was not until 2016 that Richard was acknowledged as a casualty of war and an official headstone erected at his grave. Branch Meetings: The Looe branch meets on the first Monday of each month in the Looe Social Club at 7.30pm. Please feel free to join us at one of our informal and friendly meets, to learn more about the Royal British Legion, or even perhaps become a member.

The event was well attended by Council- lors and it was so nice to hear Hugh Hedderly, the Association Chair, saying how helpful the Council had been during the setting up process. There are allotments in all stages of progress, including some in full production; there has obviously been a lot of hard work and enjoyment on this site. In my speech to those present I was able to thank individual Councillors and the Council for their support in getting the site up and running (although it did take 5 years).

YELLOW FISH EVENT I must thank Gill Bridges for the Yellow Fish Event held at the Polrean Country House on Sunday 2nd July. A well-attended event with dancing from Sheila’s School of Dancing as well as story-telling for the youngsters. The aim is to get people to understand that what is put down the yellow fish marked drains goes directly into the sea, also affecting the local bathing water quality and our beach.

MANY MORE I could write all day about the fantastic events that happen around the town from Coast to Cove, Rowing Regatta, community clean up and many, many more. We have such a vibrant town and the events happen thick and fast at this time of year. Thank you all for doing that you do – but keep on doing it.

AMENITIES REPORT

Mariner’s Garden The wall repair work is due to start once new contractors have been appointed to erect the required scaffolding along the river wall. This has included having to secure permission from Looe Harbour Commission to temporarily block the first arch as the scaffolding will protrude from the wall. Works are anticipated to start in the next couple of weeks.

Seagull Control This year there were 80 properties visited with 222 eggs replaced. This compares with 92 properties and 280 eggs in 2016 and 76 properties and 196 in 2015.

Path between Pennyland steps and St Nicholas Church, West Looe The contractors working on the demolition of the former Sardine factory have had to close the pathway running in front to the property for safety reasons whilst they complete the demolition works. This means that pedestrians walking between Hannafore and West Looe have to walk in the road. May we politely remind drivers to be aware of increased numbers of walkers in this area, to reduce their speed and to give as wide a berth as possible when passing. May we also ask pedestrians to be aware of vehicles, to walk facing the oncoming traffic and to walk single file along the road. Laura Kellaway Amenities Manager

POLPERRO FISHERMEN’S CHOIR – CELEBRATING VERY LONG SERVICE Polperro Fishermen’s Choir has been celebrating the very long service of top tenors John Pooley and Ken Puckey, who both joined in 1972. In most choirs, service of 45 years would be impressive enough, but Polperro Fishermen’s Choir was formed 94 years ago and is one of oldest in Cornwall. Murray Collings joined when Eva Cloke, the founder of the choir, was still leading it. Although Murray was a soloist on our LP made in 1973, he joined when people still had wind-up gramophones playing 78 records, when most people had a wireless, not a television, and when post-war rationing was still in force. Murray joined the choir in 1952 as a young teenager – before most people had ever heard the word – and has now been in choir for an incredible 65 John Pooley, Murray Collings, Ken Puckey years. The amazing achievements of Murray, Ken and John were recognised at a special concert on 4th July in Looe Lifeboat House, with a feature in the Cornish Times and coverage by BBC Spotlight. The Choir has more concerts in the Looe Lifeboat ‘Concert Hall’ on 27th July, and 3rd and 15th August. There will be free open-air concerts on Polperro fish quay on 26th July, 9th August and 23rd August, all Wednesdays at 7.30pm, with the Wreckers performing (in a pub!) afterwards. The choir is very appreciative of its generous audiences who, with many concerts still to come, have already donated over £700 to the RNLI and over £200 at the first summer concert in Polperro, to be divided between the British Heart Foundation and Reverse Rett. Choir Chairman David Lashbrooke, whose granddaughter suffers from Rett Syndrome, will double everything donated for Reverse Rett – there is a link to his JustGiving page on the choir website: www.polperrofishermenschoir.co.uk.

Approximately 40 members of the Looe U3A coached to Dartmouth recently and also enjoyed a memorable 2½ hour guided tour of the Dartmouth Royal Naval College. Fantastic history. Well what a fantastic day our official opening day turned out to be. The weather, which earlier in the week seemed to threaten rain and wind, turned into a warm sunny day with a blue sky making the most of the views and our allotments.

Members and guests assembled and thankfully speeches were kept short but to the point. On behalf of members, the Chairman of the Association expressed our thanks to Councillor Armand Toms, Mayor of Looe, who originally proposed Looe Town Council rent land for the allotments; the town councillors who persevered over five years to acquire the land; the West Looe Town Trust; and Big Lottery, who provided grants for the rabbit-proof fencing; and our members who have worked so hard to create their allotments.

Councillor Toms, before formally opening our allotments, congratulated us all on the allotments we have created, and thanked Councillor Trevor Crane and particularly Councillor Trevor Stacey who had worked so hard in the setting up of the track and fence. Sue Heely then presented a basket of fresh vegetables to the Lady Mayoress of Looe, Mrs. Rayna Toms, on behalf of the members, before Councillor Toms cut the ribbon with a pair of shears and declared the allotments formally opened.

Looe community garden allotments are now in a position to offer a further 11 plots to members of the community wishing to start an allotment. It’s hard work in the first month, but once that work is done, seeing your allotment produce good vegetables for the table or cutting flowers for the vase is very rewarding. The price for a full plot is just £70.00 per year, and a half plot just £40.00. The plots will not hang about, so don't think about it for too long. If you are interested and want to learn more please contact Paul on 01503 598436. KELTIQUE: AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER EVENTS

Keltique on the Quay – Quayside Centre, West Looe, every Monday evening through August: A new venture for us this year – we’re singing on Monday evenings on West Looe Quay – Mondays 31st July to 21st August at 7.30pm, and Bank Holiday Monday, 28th August, at 7pm, when we culminate by singing with Just Us, four fantastic gents who sing a cappella. Free to all, so just wander down and come and listen to some delightful vocal harmonies. Collection for Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Keltique at Looe Lifeboat Station – Sunday 10th September at 3pm A beautiful place to sing, with amazing acoustics, we’ve loved singing here the last couple of years and are so pleased we’re able to repeat the experience. And all in aid of the RNLI, what better cause.

Ilminster Belles, Rame MVC & Keltique – St Germans Church, Saturday 16th September at 7.30pm: Performing with our old friends Rame Male Voice Choir and new friends Ilminster Belles from Somerset, a choir directed by our previous MD, Jonathan Delbridge, at the stunning St Germans Church.

City of Truro Male Choir – Saturday 23rd September – somewhere in Truro!

Looe Music Festival – Saturday 30th September: Sadly we won’t be at the Festival this year as the LMF is not inviting local choirs to perform on the community stage – a great disappointment for us. However, some of us may be taking part in the The Big Cornish Sing on the beach on the Saturday afternoon, a daring initiative to get 5000 singers singing in Cornish, all at the same time and in the right key! So we wish them all luck, it promises to be great fun.

Part of LOOE AND DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB

We are a friendly group of floral enthusiasts who meet every first Tuesday of the month, 2pm at Pelynt Village Hall. Between us we have a wide range of expertise from the very experienced florist to the novice. Our shared passion is the beauty of flowers and how we can develop and share our skills to create lovely floral exhibits.

As a club, we also support skills development through workshops, competitions, collaborative work and are inspired by visiting demonstrators. Along with observing the talents of demonstrators at our meetings, we also have a small accessories stall, a raffle and chance to socialise over a cup of tea. Come and visit a meeting for £4; our next meeting is on September 5th 2017.

Fundraising – We are having a table top sale on Saturday 23rd September at Lanreath Hall, 10am-2pm. If you would like to book a table for £7 please contact Bridget Clark on 01503 220250.

The Looe and District Flower Club is affiliated with the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies – NAFAS.

LIONS CLUB OF LOOE: CARNIVAL WEEK

We are getting ready for Carnival Week. This year we would like to see lots of Box Cars or Go Karts (referred to as a vehicle) in the Saturday procession on 5th August. So here is your chance to advertise your business or show off your club or school with your very own designs.

Of course there are a few safety rules. Vehicles can be pushed, pulled or have pedals and all have some kind of an effective brake. A substantial rope (minimum ½ inch in diameter) must be attached to the rear of the vehicle. In the interests of safety, each car/kart must have an adult attendant who is competent to hold the car should the driver lose control. Drivers, child or adult, must wear a safety helmet. Registration opposite the Hannafore Hotel at 5pm on 5th August. We do not require any money or fees. Just get involved!
