Well 2020 was a year like no other in our Club’s history. Justin has settled into the role really well after a number of years on the Board. He has done a wonderful job guiding us through what has been one of the toughest periods in our history. His passion and commitment to the Club is un- questionable, and I look forward to working with Justin as we continue to strive to be a high performing organisation both on and off the field.

Post season, to add to the already difficult year, our coach Mark Stone received an offer from the that was too good to refuse. Mark made an incredible contribution to our Club in the three years he was with us. I believe the influence he had on changing the culture of our Club ranks with what was able to achieve when he came to the Club in 1967. The role of Strategy Coach in Brisbane is a perfect position for Mark. I would like to wish Mark, Kerry, Lila and Lenny all the best in their new adventure in Queensland and thank them for their commitment to the .

The positive side to Mark leaving the Club late in the year was that Brett Hand became available to coach the Club after de- parting Greater Western Sydney. Brett has a wealth of expe- rience in the AFL system, including five years as Head Coach of their NEAFL and also coaching St Marys in the NTFL to two premierships. He came out of self-isolation on January 19th and flew to Darwin on January 20th. The five days in Darwin gave him a great opportunity to spend time with the players. He has settled into his role really well and we are all looking forward to him leading a successful Glenelg team in season 2021. We also welcome Brett Exelby to the Club as League Assistant Coach and Joel Tucker as our Reserves Coach.

Our performances on the field weren’t as impressive as in 2019, but I felt, given the turnover of players, we finished around where we deserved to. We have recruited well, and have Chris Curran returning from medical studies in Renmark to be with us LIAM MCBEAN | FIRST SEMI FINAL V SOUTH full-time, and Aaron Joseph returning from retirement, so I am PHOTOGRAPHER: GORDON ANDERSON expecting a bold showing this year.

GLENELG FOOTBALL CLUB 2020 ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 3 The financial result was also extremely positive with the Club achieving a $555,889 consolidated net profit. This is the fifth CHRIS CURRAN | ROUND 4 V WEST ADELAIDE PHOTOGRAPHER: GORDON ANDERSON year in a row that we have written a profit, which enables the Club the opportunity to reinvest into our football resources and facilities for our members, supporters and local community. Our debt position remains our biggest challenge and a major focus of the Board. The excellent relationship we have with the City of Holdfast Bay Council (COHFB) continues, and we are working through these financial challenges with them. Thanks to Aman- da Wilson (Mayor), Roberto Bria (CEO of COHFB) and the COHFB elected members for their continued support. We have provid- ed a financial executive summary in the annual report that suc- cinctly details our current financial position for you, rather than me expanding on it here.

I would like to thank the Board in particular that have worked extremely hard to drive success and a strong culture at the Club, thank you for your support and commitment. To Justin Scripps, Kristin Jeffery, Paul Sandercock, Mark Stone, Emma Ross and Damien Owens, the effort you all put in during 2020 has been outstanding, and your passion for the Club and the hard work and genuine care you and your teams show ensure we continue to improve both on and off the field.

A list of acknowledgements is printed later in the report thank- ing everyone who was involved last season, so I will not repeat that. However, to all our sponsors at every level, thank you for your continued association with the Glenelg Football Club. Without your support we could not survive.

To all the volunteers, members, past players and supporters, MARK STONE thank you for remaining loyal to the Tigers. As a Club we will be PHOTOGRAPHER: GORDON ANDERSON doing everything in our power to ensure 2021 will be another year to enjoy and remember.

2021 will bring new challenges that we have not faced before as our Club community learns to live with COVID. I am confident that our football team, coaches, football support staff, volun- teers, Club staff, Board, sponsors and supporters will team to- gether to overcome every adversity.

Thank you again for your support during my first year as Presi- dent, and please join up as a member if you are not already, as without you it is not possible for the Club to achieve sustained success.

GLENELG FOOTBALL CLUB 2020 ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 5 2020 started on a high riding on the back of the 2019 Premiership.

The results of 2019 had put the Club in an unprecedented LUKE PARKS | ROUND 10 V NORTH ADELAIDE financial situation upon which the plan for 2020 was to capitalize PHOTOGRAPHER: GORDON ANDERSON on the success and further add to the increasing stability of our financial future.

As concerns grew surrounding the global pandemic, focus shifted away from growth to survival. Faced with the prospect of long term shutdowns, cashflow projections and scenario what- if calculations became the normal routine for every day. These worst case projections gave a story of large losses and financial security erosion. Throughout March, April and May, careful management of the financial resources was fundamental to ensure that we were able to pay all creditors and to keep staff financial. During this time the Club faced depleting cashflows and we were focused on innovative ways to generate income. Thankfully we were able to return to trade during June, although at a reduced capacity and with higher costs associated with COVID compliance.

The Club is extremely thankful to all for their continued support when we were all facing a very uncertain future, whether it was through the merchandise sales, memberships, donations, patronage at the venue, and sponsorship, along with the conscious reduction in spending the Club was able to trade through. Supplementing all our efforts was the Federal, State and Local Government’s financial support that the clubs were able to access, including State Government grants, Rent relief, Payroll Tax reductions, JobKeeper and the Cash Flow Boost.

It has been an extremely tough year for the Club, for our members, supporters, sponsors and the world in general. However despite the bleak prospect that we faced early in the lockdown of 2020, we have arrived to face 2021 with financial security and ready to continue improving our community worth.

Football:

From a football perspective, we had quite a turnover of play- ers from our 2019 premiership team, losing nine players from that team predominantly through retirement and the AFL draft. Trying to prepare a fit and healthy team during an interrupted pre-season and period of strict government social distancing regulations was difficult for our coaching staff. Our coaches, sup- port staff, medical team and players must be commended for their determination and flexibility to adjust their program and training routines in order for the SANFL season to commence. As your CEO, I feel extremely honoured to serve the Club who proved to be too strong on the day. and remain committed to building a legacy that will sustain our next 100 years. The Glenelg Club:

The Glenelg Club, like all hospitality venues, was not immune to the heavy restriction placed on licensed operators in order to support the government’s efforts to minimise the spread of Covid-19. Social distancing regulations meant that the business could not operate at 100% capacity. For the most part of the year, the venue could only support 25% - 50% capacity.

From a community perspective, it was great that we could pro- vide an avenue for our members and regular patrons to recon- nect again after a period of lockdown. Our Club is like a second home for many people in our community and it was great for our staff and patrons to engage with each other again. Clear- ly from a financial perspective, not being able to maximise our patron capacity impacted on our ability to maximise our profit- ability, which is expected to be a risk for the foreseeable future during the pandemic.

Members & Sponsors:

Whilst it has been a trying time for our community, I just wanted to recognise and thank all of our loyal members and sponsors who maintained their financial contribution to the Club. At a time when many people had been stood down from their em- ployment and many businesses had revenue streams severely reduced, we were extremely grateful for those who continued their membership and sponsorship during these hard times.

In closing, the health and economic risks of the Covid-19 pan- demic is expected to be prevalent for the foreseeable future. Whilst the Club maintains a reasonably healthy cash position, we must continue to be diligent in our financial management of the business and maintain sufficient cash reserves to counteract:

• projected decreased venue and match day patronage, • potential future venue shutdowns, • potential reduced SANFL distribution, • managing the ever-increasing costs of Covid compliance DARCY BAILEY | ROUND 10 V NORTH ADELAIDE • the economic vulnerability that may impact the financial PHOTOGRAPHER: GORDON ANDERSON contribution of our sponsors and members.
