Factors regulating their coastal distribution are not fully understood. We quantified land crab distribution during the dry season at Sirena Field Station in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica, and found that land crab burrow density decreases with increasing distance from the ocean. Leaf litter depth and tree seedling density are negatively correlated with land crab burrow density. Burrows are strongly associated with sand substrate and burrow density is comparatively low in clay substrate. Results suggest that G. quadratus is limited to a narrow coastal zone with sand substrate, and this distribution could have profound effects on plant community structure. Rev. Biol. Recruitment is the single most important natural event controlling year-class strength and biomass in fish populations. As evident in Georges Bank haddock, Melanogrammusaeglefinus, there is a strong relationship between recruitment success and processes occurring during the planktonic larval stage. Spatially explicit coupled biological-physical individual-based models are ideal for studying the processes of feeding, growth, and predation during the larval stage. -

MAHS Care Sheet Master List *By Eric Roscoe Care sheets are often an excellent starting point for learning more about the biology and husbandry of a given species, including their housing/enclosure requirements, temperament and handling, diet , and other aspects of care. MAHS itself has created many such care sheets for a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates we believe to have straightforward care requirements, and thus make suitable family and beginner’s to intermediate level pets. Some species with much more complex, difficult to meet, or impracticable care requirements than what can be adequately explained in a one page care sheet may be multiple pages. We can also provide additional links, resources, and information on these species we feel are reliable and trustworthy if requested. If you would like to request a copy of a care sheet for any of the species listed below, or have a suggestion for an animal you don’t see on our list, contact us to let us know! Unfortunately, for liability reasons, MAHS is unable to create or publish care sheets for medically significant venomous species. This includes species in the families Crotilidae, Viperidae, and Elapidae, as well as the Helodermatidae (the Gila Monsters and Mexican Beaded Lizards) and some medically significant rear fanged Colubridae. Those that are serious about wishing to learn more about venomous reptile husbandry that cannot be adequately covered in one to three page care sheets should take the time to utilize all available resources by reading books and literature, consulting with, and working with an experienced and knowledgeable mentor in order to learn the ropes hands on. -

Eine vergleichende Untersuchung aller beschriebenen Gecarcinidae unter habituellen, zoogeographischen und phylogenetischen Gesiditspunkten hat es bisher nicht gegeben. Die ausführliche Darstellung von RATHBUN (1918) im Rah men der amerikanischen Grapsoiden ist im wesentlichen nach systematischen Gesichtspunkten aufgebaut. Diese Arbeit diente mir als Grundlage meiner Stu dien, besonders im Hinblick auf die Determination. Angeregt wurde ich zu der Arbeit durch die reichhaltigen Ausbeuten von H. M. PETERS und A. ZILCH aus El Salvador und Honduras, sowie deren Bearbeitung durch R. BoTT, worin be reits gewisse Zweifel an der Richtigkeit der Auffassung von RATHBUN ZU er kennen sind. By MARY J. RATHBUN, Assistant Curator, Division of Marine Invertebrates, U. S. National Museum. INTKODUCTION. Among the collections obtained by Dr. Robert E. Coker during his investigations of the fishery resources of Peru during 1906-1908 were a large number of Crustacea, representing 80 species. It was the original intention to publish the reports on the Crustacea under one cover, but as it has not been feasible to complete them at the same time, the accounts of the barnacles a and isopods b have been issued first. There remain the decapods, which comprise the bulk of the collection, the stomatopods, and two species of amphipods. One of these, inhabiting the sea-coast, has been determined by Mr. Alfred O. Walker; the other, from Lake Titicaca, by Miss Ada L. Weckel. See papers immediately following. Throughout this paper, the notes printed in smaller type were con tributed by Doctor Coker. One set of specimens has been returned to the Peruvian Government; the other has been given to the United States National Museum. Economic value.—The west coast of South America supports an unusual number of species of large crabs, which form an important article of food. -

Issues are numbered sep- arately, and numbers run consecutively regardless of subject matter. Number 1 was issued January 23, 1957. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS Manuscripts for CONTRIBUTIONS IN SCIENCE may be in any field of Life or Earth Sciences. Acceptance of papers will be determined by the amount and character of new information. Although priority will be given to manuscripts by staff members, or to papers dealing largely with specimens in the collections of the Museum, other technical papers will be considered. All manuscripts must be recommended for consideration by the curator in charge of the proper section or by the editorial board. Manuscripts must conform to those specifications listed below and will be examined for suitability by an Editorial Committee including review by competent specialists outside the Museum. Authors proposing new taxa in a CONTRIBUTIONS IN SCIENCE must indicate that the primary type has become the property of a scientific institution of their choice and cited by name.
