Factors regulating their coastal distribution are not fully understood. We quantified land crab distribution during the dry season at Sirena Field Station in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica, and found that land crab burrow density decreases with increasing distance from the ocean. Leaf litter depth and tree seedling density are negatively correlated with land crab burrow density. Burrows are strongly associated with sand substrate and burrow density is comparatively low in clay substrate. Results suggest that G. quadratus is limited to a narrow coastal zone with sand substrate, and this distribution could have profound effects on plant community structure. Rev. Biol. MAHS Care Sheet Master List *By Eric Roscoe Care sheets are often an excellent starting point for learning more about the biology and husbandry of a given species, including their housing/enclosure requirements, temperament and handling, diet , and other aspects of care. MAHS itself has created many such care sheets for a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates we believe to have straightforward care requirements, and thus make suitable family and beginner’s to intermediate level pets. Some species with much more complex, difficult to meet, or impracticable care requirements than what can be adequately explained in a one page care sheet may be multiple pages. We can also provide additional links, resources, and information on these species we feel are reliable and trustworthy if requested. If you would like to request a copy of a care sheet for any of the species listed below, or have a suggestion for an animal you don’t see on our list, contact us to let us know! Unfortunately, for liability reasons, MAHS is unable to create or publish care sheets for medically significant venomous species. This includes species in the families Crotilidae, Viperidae, and Elapidae, as well as the Helodermatidae (the Gila Monsters and Mexican Beaded Lizards) and some medically significant rear fanged Colubridae. Those that are serious about wishing to learn more about venomous reptile husbandry that cannot be adequately covered in one to three page care sheets should take the time to utilize all available resources by reading books and literature, consulting with, and working with an experienced and knowledgeable mentor in order to learn the ropes hands on. -

Coker during his investigations of the fishery resources of Peru during 1906-1908 were a large number of Crustacea, representing 80 species. It was the original intention to publish the reports on the Crustacea under one cover, but as it has not been feasible to complete them at the same time, the accounts of the barnacles a and isopods b have been issued first. There remain the decapods, which comprise the bulk of the collection, the stomatopods, and two species of amphipods. One of these, inhabiting the sea-coast, has been determined by Mr. Alfred O. Walker; the other, from Lake Titicaca, by Miss Ada L. Weckel. See papers immediately following. Throughout this paper, the notes printed in smaller type were con tributed by Doctor Coker. One set of specimens has been returned to the Peruvian Government; the other has been given to the United States National Museum. Economic value.—The west coast of South America supports an unusual number of species of large crabs, which form an important article of food. -

[email protected] , 2 [email protected] ABSTRACT The growth of organisms is accompanied by changes in proportion and size, and it is known as relative or allometric growth. C. crassum is one of the largest crab species it inhabits mangrove forests in the Eastern tropical Pacific, however, the data of this specie is deficient and limited to a few records. Therefore, the aim of this work was to estimate the growth of C. crassum in El Salado stream, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. A total of 252 organisms were captured in the rainy season, which were marked and released after assessments. The Huxley equation was used to determine allometry and to estimate the condition factor (K) and the growth rate. The sex ratio was 1:1.72, favoring females. The range of the condition factor in females was between 0.02 and 0.06 g/cm3. In ovigerous females the K mínimum value was 0.03 and the maximum value was 0.08 g/cm3; for males the K minimum was 0.03 and the maximum was 0.14 g/cm3. -

Abstract Invasive rodent eradications are one of the most effective conservation interventions to restore island ecosystems. However, achievements in the tropics are lagging behind those in temperate regions. Land crab interference in bait uptake has been identified as one of the main causes of rodent eradication failure on tropical islands, but the issue of effective mitigation of bait loss due to land crab consumption is poorly understood. For example, there are over 100 species of land crab and each may behave differently. We reviewed the available literature to answer: (1) which crab species are the most problematic? (2) what mitigation measures have been effective? and (3) how do invasive rodents impact land crab communities? We analysed a systematic dataset from six tropical islands to test two hypotheses: (a) bait uptake is highest when burrowing (Brachyura) land crabs are present; and (b) small land crabs (including juveniles of the larger species) are highly vulnerable to rodent predation.
