Identify and explain how did indigenous people impact upon their environment? Indigenous people changed the landscape using fire stick farming which also assisted hunting Aboriginal people used their knowledge of the seasons to optimise hunting, gathering, eel farming and more Aboriginal people used organic local materials to create tools to assist them with hunting and gathering their food i.e. eel traps, woven grass baskets, rock fish traps etc. They only ever took what they needed from the land and had a deep respect and spiritual connection to the land and their surroundings. 2. How are humans impacting on natural resources in today’s society? How does this affect wildlife? When the land is disrespected, damaged or destroyed, this can have real impact on the wellbeing of people, plants and animals. European settlers and modern day humans have caused land degradation by: •Introducing poor farming practices causing land degradation •Introducing noxious weeds •Changing water flow courses and draining wetlands •Introducing feral animals •Destroying habitat through urbanization, logging and farming practices 3. -
The Gunditjmara Land Justice Story Jessica K Weir
The legal outcomes the Gunditjmara achieved in the 1980s are often overlooked in the history of land rights and native title in Australia. The High Court Onus v Alcoa case and the subsequent settlement negotiated with the State of Victoria, sit alongside other well known bench marks in our land rights history, including the Gurindji strike (also known as the Wave Hill Walk-Off) and land claim that led to the development of land rights legislation in the Northern Territory. This publication links the experiences in the 1980s with the Gunditjmara’s present day recognition of native title, and considers the possibilities and limitations of native title within the broader context of land justice. This committee was responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. Resource overview Introduction to NAIDOC Week – A history of protest and celebration NAIDOC Week is usually celebrated in the first full week of July. Schools are encouraged to recognise and celebrate NAIDOC Week at any time throughout the year to ensure this important event isn’t overlooked. Themes can be incorporated as part of school life and the school curriculum. NAIDOC stands for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’, the committee responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC WEEK 5th to 12th July 2009 National Aboriginal Islander Day Observance Committee All Australians are invited to join in the celebrations for NAIDOC Week 2009, from Sunday 5th July through to Sunday 12th July. The theme for NAIDOC 2009 is Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth. The aim of the theme is to honour the achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and looks to the future. Each year a host city is selected as a focal point for national NAIDOC activity. In 2009, the national focus will be on Brisbane and will include the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony. The awards ceremony highlights the individual achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC week celebrates and promotes a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their culture. From Alice Springs to Adelaide, Canberra to Cairns, Hobart to Hay and Brisbane to Broome, communities throughout the country will celebrate the survival of Aboriginal peoples, the continuation of Aboriginal culture and will promote the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have made to our nation. NAIDOC Week is the outcome of a long history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander efforts to bring issues of concern to the attention of Governments and the general public. In 1924, the Australian Aborigines Progressive Association (AAPA) was formed in Sydney under the leadership of Fred Maynard. In 1932 William Cooper, from Cummeragunga, formed the Australian Aborigines League in Melbourne. In November 1937, Cooper called a meeting of Aboriginal people suggesting that they hold a Day of Mourning on the next Australia Day to publicise their cause and stir the conscience of non-Aboriginal Australia. -
