Jordan Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy December 2011 Title: Causal Skepticism and the Destruction of Antiquity This dissertation examines the development of skeptical views concerning causation from the medieval to the early modern period. While causal skepticism is often overlooked by intellectual historians, I argue that, in spite of its typical motivation as a religious response to shibboleths of ancient philosophy that stood askance from the dogmas of Abrahamic theology, causal skepticism was the greatest intellectual development of post-antiquity and ultimately culminated into modern Science. The first chapter examines Hume's famous analysis of causation and serves as a foil for the prior history of causal skepticism addressed in the subsequent chapters. The second chapter addresses the dispute over causation in medieval Islamic philosophy. -
The Unity Philosophical Experience
THE UNITY OF PHILOSOPHICAL EXPERIENCE BY ETIENNE GILSON NEW YORK CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS 1950 COPYRIGHT, 1937, BY CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS Printed in the United States of America All rights reserved. No part of this booh may be reproduced in any form without the permission of Charles Scribner's Sons •NU)U obetat Arthur J. Scanlan, S.T.D. Censor Librorum 3mjrrtmatur <• Patrick Cardinal Hayes Archbishop, New York New York, November 6,193? To my wife E.G. FOREWORD THE history of philosophy is much more part of phi losophy itself than the history of science is part of science, for it is not impossible to become a competent scientist without knowing much about the history of science, but no man can carry very far his own philo sophical reflections unless he first studies the history of philosophy. In point of fact, the First Book of Aris totle's Metaphysics is also the first known History of Greek Philosophy, and it remains a perfect example of how such a history should be written. For indeed it is a philosophical history of philosophy, whereas too many modern histories of philosophy are written in an un- philosophical way. Unless it may be shown as exhibiting some intrinsic intelligibility the endless chain of mutually destructive systems that runs from Thales to Karl Marx is less suggestive of hope than of discouragement. It is the proper aim and scope of the present book to show that the history of philosophy makes philo sophical sense, and to define its meaning in regard to the nature of philosophical knowledge itself. -
Voltaire E a Visão Iluminista Do Progresso
História Unisinos 16(3):379-390, Setembro/Dezembro 2012 © 2012 by Unisinos – doi: 10.4013/htu.2012.163.10 Voltaire e a visão iluminista do progresso Voltaire and the en lightenment view of progress Rogério Arthmar1 [email protected] Resumo. Abstract. Th is paper retrieves the concept of progress developed in Voltaire’s historical works, especially in the books Siècle de Louis XIV and Essai sur les moeurs. Initially, Voltaire’s main literary and scientifi c sources with respect to this specifi c fi eld of investigation are examined, pointing out also his prescriptions for a new methodology of historical writ- ing based on reason. In this connection, his view of progress as the apex of civilization in some periods is presented as well. Next, the long term causes of human backwardness and stagnation highlighted by Voltaire are analyzed, followed by a discussion of the main elements he identifi ed as capable of raising society to an unprecedented phase of progress. -

DOI: 12 The sacre of Louis XVI: The End of a Myth CHANTAL GRELL The sacre of Louis XVI (1774-g3) is not a new subject. Although Edgard Faure has previously spoken of the ceremony as a mere anecdote when compared to the dramatic events that the king- dom of France had recently experienced, 1 the German historian Hermann Weber has done justice to the episode. The sacre of Louis XVI in 1775 was not an ordinary sacre, even if the ritual established by long-standing tradition was, to all appearances, respected.2 In Weber's opinion it was as if this much-debated ceremony brought to light the deep transformations which had touched the kingdom since the middle of the century, 3 particu- larly in the spheres of politics and religion. -
