UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE in the Land of Perfect
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE In the Land of Perfect Bliss A Thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts by Simona Suresh Supekar August 2013 Thesis Committee: Professor Andrew Winer, Co-Chairperson Professor Tod Goldberg, Co-Chairperson Professor Mark Haskell Smith Copyright by Simona Suresh Supekar 2013 The Thesis of Simona Suresh Supekar is approved: Committee Co-Chairperson Committee Co-Chairperson University of California, Riverside Acknowledgements I am indebted to the guidance of Mark Haskell Smith, whose relentless support and spot- on feedback throughout the writing process was crucial to getting this far. I also want to thank Tod Goldberg for accepting me into the program and for his very insightful comments on my work. The smart, thoughtful feedback from Mary Yukari Waters was also instrumental in getting my story where it needed to be. Thanks also to my many colleagues at UCR who provided very valuable comments on my work and whose work I too admire. I am so lucky to have had you as friends in this program, so much so that I copied verbatim the first half of this sentence from the sample acknowledgments page in the thesis review packet. Last, I want to thank my parents Suresh and Shaila Supekar who gave me the stories to tell and the desire to tell them by virtue of just being here, in America, as immigrants who left so much behind in India. And of course, none of my work would be possible without the love—upon which everything is built, really—from my partner Arturo Aguilar, who pushed me to follow my dream and has supported me in every way throughout this journey. -
The Case of Rihanna: Erotic Violence and Black Female Desire
Fleetwood_Fleetwood 8/15/2013 10:52 PM Page 419 Nicole R. Fleetwood The Case of Rihanna: Erotic Violence and Black Female Desire Note: This article was drafted prior to Rihanna and Chris Brown’s public reconciliation, though their rekindled romance supports many of the arguments outlined herein. Fig. 1: Cover of Esquire, November 2011 issue, U. S. Edition. Photograph by Russell James. he November 2011 issue of Esquire magazine declares Rihanna “the sexiest Twoman alive.” On the cover, Rihanna poses nude with one leg propped, blocking view of her breast and crotch. The entertainer stares out provocatively, with mouth slightly ajar. Seaweed clings to her glistening body. A small gun tattooed under her right arm directs attention to her partially revealed breast. Rihanna’s hands brace her body, and her nails dig into her skin. The feature article and accompanying photographs detail the hyperbolic hotness of the celebrity; Ross McCammon, the article’s author, acknowledges that the pop star’s presence renders him speechless and unable to keep his composure. Interwoven into anecdotes and narrative scenes explicating Rihanna’s desirability as a sexual subject are her statements of her sexual appetite and the pleasure that she finds in particular forms of sexual play that rehearse gendered power inequity and the titillation of pain. That Rihanna’s right arm is carefully positioned both to show the tattoo of the gun aimed at her breast, and that her fingers claw into her flesh, commingle sexual pleasure and pain, erotic desire and violence. Here and elsewhere, Rihanna employs her body as a stage for the exploration of modes of violence structured into hetero- sexual desire and practices. -

An Intergenerational Narrative Analysis of Black Mothers and Daughters
Still Waiting to Exhale: An Intergenerational Narrative Analysis of Black Mothers and Daughters DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jamila D. Smith, B.A., MFA College of Education and Human Ecology The Ohio State University 2012 Dissertation Committee: Professor Elaine Richardson, Advisor Professor Adrienne D. Dixson Professor Carmen Kynard Professor Wendy Smooth Professor Cynthia Tyson Copyright by Jamila D. Smith 2012 Abstract This dissertation consists of a nine month, three-state ethnographic study on the intersectional effects of race, age, gender, and place in the lives of fourteen Black mothers and daughters, ages 15-65, who attempt to analyze and critique the multiple and competing notions of Black womanhood as “at risk” and “in crisis.” Epistemologically, the research is grounded in Black women’s narrative and literacy practices, and fills a gap in the existing literature on Black girlhood and Black women’s lived experiences through attention to the development of mother/daughter relationships, generational narratives, societal discourse, and othermothering. I argue that an in-depth analysis and critique of the dominant “at risk” and “in crisis” discourse is necessary to understand the conversations that are and are not taking place between Black mothers and daughters about race, gender, age, and place; that it is important to understand the ways in which Black girls respond to media portrayals and stereotypes; and that it is imperative that we closely examine the existing narratives at play in the everyday lives of intergenerational Black girls and women in Black communities. -

Three for All Chapter 1
Three For All Chapter 1 Harry heard the knock at the door and answered it, despite his aunt's order that he was not to touch the door when no one was at home. He opened it to find a girl with spiked hair in a shade of blue that made Harry think of a nuclear reaction. She was wearing a spaghetti strap top and a skirt that almost demanded that Harry stare at her legs, but he was not going to fall for that. "Hey, Tonks! How are you?" Besides being rude, if I stare at her legs, she's gonna comment and embarrass the hell out of me. "Pretty good, Harry. How're you?" She gently pushed her way into the house. "So, ol' horse-face gone for now?" "Yeah, Aunt Petunia is out of the house for the day, and 'Dudders' is out wherever it … I mean he gets to. What's up?" "Nothing. Just doing the usual check-in, and it was decided that I would probably be best for it. At least if I show up, there can be talk of your girlfriend dropping by for a visit." She laughed. "People might talk if Moody showed up too often." Harry thought for a moment what she might be talking about, and then shuddered as he laughed. "Woo…people thinking he's my lover? Yeesh. I'd rather be linked with Malfoy than that !" Tonks laughed so hard that she fell to the floor, and the skirt rode even higher, high enough that he caught a glimpse of knickers.
