UPPER CANADA RAILWAY SOCIETY BOX 122 STATION "A" TORONTO, ONTARIO Photo On Oct. 15, 1989, CPR's yard trackage in Goderlch, Ont. was almost completely dismantled, this being the western terminus of the 80- mile Goderlch Sub. from Guelph. This view, looking west toward Lake Huron, shows the station (which, hopefully, will survive) and the engine shed, right. ^^^^^ Western visitor: two of these Edmonton Transit trolley coaches are in Toronto for tests. The bodies were built by General Motors and the motors and controls by Brown Boveri; the 100-unit order commenced service in the Alberta capital eight years ago. This view of 178 was taken in Edmonton on July 13, 1983. _Dave Chalmers Survivor: 60 years young and still apparently going strong in CPR Engineering Dept. service was former ore car 376784, photographed on a siding beside the railway's West Toronto Shop, Nov. 4, 1989. It was built by Canadian Car & Foundry to the designs of the Hart- Otis Car Co.; the 25-foot car was designed to hold 80 tons of nickel ore. The railway ordered several hundred such cars in the 1920s. __john D. The accompanying cross- sectional schematic shows the positioning of the cranes relative to the tracks. The facility will be connected to the MacTier VAUGHAN Subdivision by two 1,525 metre (5,000 foot) lead tracks; a wye track layout wfll permit access and egress from both north and south. -

Hard by Bill’s Fish market in Digby, Nova Scotia, CPR RDC-1 9059 is backing down to Digby Wharf on July 8, 1969, to exchange passengers connecting with the SS Princess of Acadia. The vessel is operating on the Canadian Pacific‘s Bay of Fundy ferry service between Saint John, New Brunswick and Digby, Nova Scotia. Dayliner 9059 was one of two RDC-1s purchased in 1956 especially for service on CP’s Dominion Atlantic Railway. Both 9059 and sister 9058 carried the Dominion Atlantic name on their tuscan red letterboards for years until the advent of CP Rail and “action” red. Who Won the Battle of Village Lake Louise? Park Planning, Tourism Development, and the Downhill Ski Industry in Banff National Park, 1964-1979 by Qi Chen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation University of Alberta © Qi Chen, 2015 ii Abstract This study explores the history of stakeholder politics in the controversial debates over proposed plans for Village Lake Louise. A new ski resort village plan proposed for Banff National Park in 1971 triggered intense debate and mobilized protests from the Canadian public. Public consultation hearings attracted high participation and the proposal was ultimately turned down by the Government of Canada. The key proponents of the proposal were the National and Historic Parks Branch, Lake Louise Lifts Ltd. and Imperial Oil. Key opponents included National and Provincial Parks Association of Canada, Alpine Club of Canada, Bow Valley Naturalist Society, Environmental Law Association, as well as academics and members of the broader public. Using development to justify preservation was a rationale deeply entrenched in the philosophy of Canadian national parks administration and policy making. During the debate, Premier Peter Lougheed and his Alberta intergovernmental affairs minister Don Getty exercised a new provincialism that challenged Ottawa’s jurisdiction in national parks, further complicating the politics of development and tourism pertinent to Lake Louise. Federal Minister Jean Chretien responded with a rejection of the proposal and maintained national parks authority and control. Final victory for conservation advocates in 1972 was an unlikely outcome that warrants closer examination. -

Please stop the cruel Omnibus Crime Bill. We can make Canada safer, not meaner. To our Federal and Provincial leaders: We agree that Canadians should work together to make our country a safer, more just place for everyone. However, we have grave concerns about the proposed federal Bill C-10, the crime bill that is currently being rushed through Parliament in Ottawa. We don’t want the federal government to impose mandatory sentences that will fill new prisons with people who should not be there. We have seen that strategy fail completely in the United States. Why would we repeat that dangerous experiment here in Canada? We need to focus on the causes of crime, instead of paying endlessly for the consequences. We believe that Canada should use an evidence-based approach to justice. We should be committed to preventing crimes, and to restorative justice that meets the victim’s needs and helps the community to heal. We ask that you join with other provinces in refusing to pay for Bill C-10, and instead call for the establishment of an independent commission of diverse citizens and experts to create a plan for Canadian justice that is fully costed and effective.
