OCEAN TO OCEAN G. M. Grant's 'roundunvarnisk'd tale' David Jackel GIEORGE MONRO GRANT'S Ocean to Ocean has often been described as a classic Canadian travel book, and rightly so. Few other works of its kind retain their appeal three generations after publication, when the novelty of the experiences described has long dissipated and the writer himself has long ceased to be a figure in the popular mind. Grant still speaks to us, more than a hundred years after his journey, and his book would, I think, stand comparison with such non-Canadian classics of the genre as Defoe's Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain and Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides. Such a comparison is not, however, my purpose here. Although Grant's Ocean to Ocean is, indeed, a masterful travel narrative, it is also much more than that, and just how much more does not seem to have been recognized. In the revised Literary History of Canada R. G. Moyles does make brief reference to Grant's "narrative stances" and proposes that we view the book as a "combination of adventure- story and mythic chronicle."1 These comments are suggestive, but they do not go nearly far enough to explain either the significance of Grant's ideas or his artistry in expressing them. The word artistry I choose deliberately, because a literary analysis of Ocean to Ocean reveals that Grant has, notwithstanding his disclaimers, done more than simply forward to the printer the notes hastily taken during his transcontinental journey. -

JAY UNDERWOOD........ 130 FRONT COVER: When the Intercolonial Railway of Canada opened its through line from central Canada to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1876, the passengers had a choice of several different types of accommodation. Most sumptuous and elaborate was the first class sleeping car exemplified by sleeper "Restigouche", of which this is an interior view. Notice the elaborately carved woodwork, the fancy oil lamps, the plush seats, the decorated ceiling and the beautiful carpet; all typical of the later Victorian era. At the end of the car is a small but adequate buffet, and each section has its own table on which food could be served. UPPER CANADA RAILWAY SOCIETY BOX 122 STATION "A" TORONTO, ONTARIO Photo On Oct. 15, 1989, CPR's yard trackage in Goderlch, Ont. was almost completely dismantled, this being the western terminus of the 80- mile Goderlch Sub. from Guelph. This view, looking west toward Lake Huron, shows the station (which, hopefully, will survive) and the engine shed, right. ^^^^^ Western visitor: two of these Edmonton Transit trolley coaches are in Toronto for tests. The bodies were built by General Motors and the motors and controls by Brown Boveri; the 100-unit order commenced service in the Alberta capital eight years ago. This view of 178 was taken in Edmonton on July 13, 1983. _Dave Chalmers Survivor: 60 years young and still apparently going strong in CPR Engineering Dept. service was former ore car 376784, photographed on a siding beside the railway's West Toronto Shop, Nov. 4, 1989. It was built by Canadian Car & Foundry to the designs of the Hart- Otis Car Co.; the 25-foot car was designed to hold 80 tons of nickel ore. The railway ordered several hundred such cars in the 1920s. __john D. Forster’s imperative to “only connect” has long been read as modernist slogan for the rarefied depth of authentic interpersonal intimacy. Reframing the historical co-emergence of literary modernism and modern social science, this project tells a different story—not of connections between exceptional humans, but of connections between persons and environments. The prevailing canons of modernism have not yet grasped the internal complexity of early-twentieth-century debates regarding the interdependence of human and nonhuman agency.
