Inhuman Power: Infrastructural Modernism And The Fiction Of Social Form Abstract E.M. Forster’s imperative to “only connect” has long been read as modernist slogan for the rarefied depth of authentic interpersonal intimacy. Reframing the historical co-emergence of literary modernism and modern social science, this project tells a different story—not of connections between exceptional humans, but of connections between persons and environments. The prevailing canons of modernism have not yet grasped the internal complexity of early-twentieth-century debates regarding the interdependence of human and nonhuman agency. Early-twentieth-century sociologists like Émile Durkheim grounded both the autonomy of human culture and the disciplinary authority of sociology on the premise of species exceptionalism—the independence of human relations from nature and technology. “Inhuman Power” uncovers how the latent epistemological assumptions of Durkheimian social theory continue to structure contemporary aesthetic value judgments and literary-historical paradigms. The dominant structuring prism of nineteenth-century social theory has led critics to understand modernist art as a form of human aesthetic agency responsive to the reifying degradations of machines, masses, and media—a symbolic consolation for human alienation from nature (both the natural world and the “second nature” of administered society). This model casts modernism within a protracted philosophical stalemate between the human and nonhuman that obscures the mixing of natural and social agencies. Challenging the presumed dominance of this position, “Inhuman Power” assembles a set of core texts that comprise a significant counter-aesthetic ot the dualism of nature and society. Examining texts by E.M. Forster, H.G. Wells, Gabriel Tarde, Joseph Conrad, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Charles Chesnutt, this project recasts modernism not in terms of subjects alienated from nature, but subjectivities co-constituted with environments. A shared formal question animates all of the texts that I examine: by what aesthetic concept or literary feature can texts reimagine the conceptual relationship between character and environment, nature and society? Excavating aesthetic strategies developed across sociology and literary art to represent the intensifying entanglement of natural, social, and technological agencies in the first decade of the twentieth century, “Inhuman Power” reanimates these writers’ ambition to imaginatively transform the concepts through which human beings render the material world thinkable and thus how human beings interact with that world. More than anything, his instinct to get to heart of things, fast—to conjure the big picture and to keep the big questions ever-present—made it easy to pursue this work as a kind of Worthy vocation and not the uncertain, slightly drearier sWath of time that it could have been. His intellectual generosity and belief in the kinds of work that we do will stay with me far beyond my time at Penn. Paul Saint-Amour has reliably pushed me both to bring my arguments into tighter analytic focus and to nudge them outside the limits of my scholarly comfort zone. His willingness to entertain my arguments to their furthest reaches modeled for me an alchemic mix of rigor and play that I hope to emulate. Since my first week of grad school, Jo Park has guided how I frame my interests and enthusiasms through the discourses, animating questions, and professional performances that render them legible and socially meaningful.     OCEAN TO OCEAN G. M. Grant's 'roundunvarnisk'd tale' David Jackel GIEORGE MONRO GRANT'S Ocean to Ocean has often been described as a classic Canadian travel book, and rightly so. Few other works of its kind retain their appeal three generations after publication, when the novelty of the experiences described has long dissipated and the writer himself has long ceased to be a figure in the popular mind. Grant still speaks to us, more than a hundred years after his journey, and his book would, I think, stand comparison with such non-Canadian classics of the genre as Defoe's Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain and Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides. Such a comparison is not, however, my purpose here. Although Grant's Ocean to Ocean is, indeed, a masterful travel narrative, it is also much more than that, and just how much more does not seem to have been recognized. In the revised Literary History of Canada R. G. Moyles does make brief reference to Grant's "narrative stances" and proposes that we view the book as a "combination of adventure- story and mythic chronicle."1 These comments are suggestive, but they do not go nearly far enough to explain either the significance of Grant's ideas or his artistry in expressing them. The word artistry I choose deliberately, because a literary analysis of Ocean to Ocean reveals that Grant has, notwithstanding his disclaimers, done more than simply forward to the printer the notes hastily taken during his transcontinental journey.

In the paper offered to the M A students, the grouping together of Literatures from atleast four of the Commonwealth nations into one paper was basically a makeshift arrangement. The objectives behind the formulation of such separate area as courses for special study remained vaguely described and therefore unjustified. The teacher and students, were both uncertain as to why and how to hold the disparate units together. The study emerges out of such immediate dilemma and it hopes to clarify certain problematic concerns related to the student of the Commonwealth Literature. Most Commonwealth criticism follows either (a) a justificatory approach; or (b) a confrontationist approach; In approach (a) usually a defensive stand is taken by local critics and a supportive non-critical, indulgent stand is adopted by the Western critic. In both cases, the issue of language use, nomenclature and the event cycle of colonial history are the routes by which the argument is moved. Approach (b) invariably adopts the Post-Colonial Discourse as its norm of presenting the argument. According to this approach, the commonness of Commonwealth Literatures emerges from the fact that all these Literatures have walked ••• through the fires of enslavement and therefore are anguished, embattled units of creative expression.

With its aim of refuting individualistic subjectivity, the philosophy of singularity puts forward that the humanist point of view unnecessarily polarizes individuality and community. By placing a challenging scenario of antihumanism against the humanist sense of responsibility, the philosophy of singularity questions whether it is possible to do philosophy without saying ‘I’. This antihumanist stance, which replaces the ‘I’/‘other’ differentiation with Nancy’s ‘the other of another,’ chooses to strengthen the link between ontology and resistance in the notion of coexistence, beyond traditional hypotheses on immanence or transcendence. In order to discover the manifestation of coexistence within the frame of an antihumanist philosophy of singularity, this article begins with digging deep under the notion of individualistic subjectivity to show that it embodies a hollow and plastic category. Following this, Nancy’s stress on the term ‘ecstasy’ will be grounded upon the Freudian theory of drives and the concept of coexistence will be situated in a dark realm that the humanist worldview would expect in the least.

    philosophies Article The Ecological Turn in Design: Adopting a Posthumanist Ethics to Inform Value Sensitive Design Steven Umbrello Institute of Ethics and Emerging Technologies (IEET), University of Turin, 10124 Turin, Italy; [email protected] Abstract: Design for Values (DfV) philosophies are a series of design approaches that aim to incorpo- rate human values into the early phases of technological design to direct innovation into beneficial outcomes. The difficulty and necessity of directing advantageous futures for transformative technolo- gies through the application and adoption of value-based design approaches are apparent. However, questions of whose values to design are of critical importance. DfV philosophies typically aim to enrol the stakeholders who may be affected by the emergence of such a technology. However, regardless of which design approach is adopted, all enrolled stakeholders are human ones who propose human values. Contemporary scholarship on metahumanisms, particularly those on posthumanism, have decentred the human from its traditionally privileged position among other forms of life. Arguments that the humanist position is not (and has never been) tenable are persuasive. As such, scholarship has begun to provide a more encompassing ontology for the investigation of nonhuman values. Given the potentially transformative nature of future technologies as relates to the earth and its many assemblages, it is clear that the value investigations of these design approaches fail to account for all relevant stakeholders (i.e., nonhuman animals). However, this concept reached its dialectic perfection at the hand of the Marxist philosopher Georg Lukács (1885- 1971). Believing that Man is the focal point in every literary content, Lukács conceives Realism as the basis of all literary genres due to its significant role in solving Man's problems of alienation and the self- spilt caused by Capitalism, and it is, therefore, the best representation of his Reflection Theory. Reflection for Lukács is neither spontaneous nor photographic, but deliberate and conscious. In this process, the writer plays the role of the mediator between literature and the society. A great writer has, thus, to portray his characters and their struggle for self-realization objectively without imposing his political orientation. Through his typical characters and situations, the writer brings the reality in front of his readers' eyes so as to enable them to confront their troubles and think of change, and this is "intellectual and moral work" of the realist writer in Lukács's perspective.     SAVING ENGLAND: ANN VERONICA, SEXUAL MORALITY AND NATIONAL REGENERATION1 Anthony Patterson Concerned about the erotic content of his novel The Trespasser (1912), D. H. Lawrence famously told Edward Garnett that he did not wish to be ‘talked about in an Ann Veronica fashion’.2 It is some gauge of the scandal Ann Veronica caused that Lawrence should worry about achieving the same kind of notoriety that Ann Veronica brought Wells. To a modern reader, this might appear surprising, as Ann Veronica does not seem particularly racy. It is certainly less sexually daring than many contemporary sex novels such as Hubert Wales’s The Yoke (1907) or Elinor Glyn’s Three Weeks (1907). Even John St Loe Strachey, a supporter of the National Social Purity Crusade and one of the novel’s most trenchant critics, commented ‘Ann Veronica has not a coarse word in it, nor are the “suggestive” passages open to any very severe criticism.’3 If Ann Veronica did not offend through franker sexual depictions, many critics still accused Wells of supplanting an old morality based on female sexual restraint and the sanctity of matrimony with a new morality of sexual freedom and self-indulgent individualism. Writing in the Daily News, R. A. Scott-James argued: ‘In effect he is content to negate the old morality as something out of date, effete, harmful, tiresome; he puts in its place a negative which masquerades as the supreme assertion of individuality’ (WCH, 157). Wilfred Whitten, writing in T. P.’s Weekly, referred to the novel’s eponymous hero as ‘a modern British daughter defying the old morality, and saying it is glorious to do so’ (WCH, 162).
