AUTHOR'S PREFACE This history has been appearing serially through the Lindsaj "Watchman-Warder" for the past eleven months and is now issued in book form for the first time. The occasion for its preparation is, of course, the one hundredth anniversary of the opening up of Victoria county. Its chief purposes are four in number: — (1) to place on record the local details of pioneer life that are fast passing into oblivion; (2) to instruct the present generation of school-children in the ori- gins and development of the social system in which they live; (3) to show that the form which our county's development has taken has been largely determined by physiographical, racial, social, and economic forces; and (4) to demonstrate how we may, after a scien- tific study of these forces, plan for the evolution of a higher eco- nomic and social order. The difficulties of the work have been prodigious. A Victoria County Historical Society, formed twenty years ago for a similar purpose, found the field so sterile that it disbanded, leaving no re- cords behind. Under such circumstances, I have had to dig deep. -

OCEAN TO OCEAN G. M. Grant's 'roundunvarnisk'd tale' David Jackel GIEORGE MONRO GRANT'S Ocean to Ocean has often been described as a classic Canadian travel book, and rightly so. Few other works of its kind retain their appeal three generations after publication, when the novelty of the experiences described has long dissipated and the writer himself has long ceased to be a figure in the popular mind. Grant still speaks to us, more than a hundred years after his journey, and his book would, I think, stand comparison with such non-Canadian classics of the genre as Defoe's Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain and Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides. Such a comparison is not, however, my purpose here. Although Grant's Ocean to Ocean is, indeed, a masterful travel narrative, it is also much more than that, and just how much more does not seem to have been recognized. In the revised Literary History of Canada R. G. Moyles does make brief reference to Grant's "narrative stances" and proposes that we view the book as a "combination of adventure- story and mythic chronicle."1 These comments are suggestive, but they do not go nearly far enough to explain either the significance of Grant's ideas or his artistry in expressing them. The word artistry I choose deliberately, because a literary analysis of Ocean to Ocean reveals that Grant has, notwithstanding his disclaimers, done more than simply forward to the printer the notes hastily taken during his transcontinental journey. -

Forster’s imperative to “only connect” has long been read as modernist slogan for the rarefied depth of authentic interpersonal intimacy. Reframing the historical co-emergence of literary modernism and modern social science, this project tells a different story—not of connections between exceptional humans, but of connections between persons and environments. June, 2017 65 Sunray Street, Whitby, Ontario, Canada L1N 8Y3 11148414 | 01 | Report No. 1 | Executive Summary A Phase One Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) was completed by GHD Limited (GHD) for Delpark Homes (Port Perry) Inc. for land located along the north side of King Street approximately 60m west of Perryview Drive in Port Perry, Regional Municipality of Durham, Ontario “the Property”. The Property encompasses an area on the order of 17.4 hectares (43 acres) and contains a barn of unknown age. The remainder is used for agricultural purposes (cash crops). The surrounding areas to the north east and west are municipally serviced for water and sewer. Based on information compiled, the Property was first developed for agricultural use prior to 1927. The Phase One ESA has been prepared to provide Delpark Homes (Port Perry) Inc. with a professional opinion of the potential for materially significant environmental liabilities as part of the due diligence process. It is understood that the Property is being considered for future residential development. The Property is located in the Town of Port Perry on Part Lot 17 and 18, Concession 5, in the geographic Township of Reach. The surrounding area can be generally described as a mix of residential and agricultural land use. Based upon observations made during the site reconnaissance including the surrounding property uses, and review of the historical documentation, potentially contaminating activities (PCAs) resulting in areas of potential environmental concern (APECs) were identified for the Phase One Property. -

The Impact of Railways on the World Railroads first appeared in the United Kingdom in the early 19th Century.This new transportation technology turned out to be revolutionary in more than one sense. Railroads not only reduced travel time for individuals and dramatically cut the costs of shipped goods, they also contributed to the creation of modern capitalism and even led to the acceptance of standardized time. Simply put, the demands for capital were so great (“about $36,000 a mile on average at a time when $1,000 a year was a middle class income”)1 old ways of providing capital, usually from wholesale merchants, were no longer sufficient. As for the standardization of time, a uniquely Canadian contribution,2 railway travel spanning thousands of miles and several time zones (as was the case in Canada) required that time be synchronized on a more widespread standard basis, rather than varying from city to city, as had been the case prior to the adoption of Standard Time. -
