Sunday, August 18, 2019 – 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Monday, August 19, 2019 – Parish School of Religion (PSR) Class # 2

The Gospel today points out to us that our usual image of Jesus as sweet and loving needs a bit of correction. Today Jesus tells us in His own words: Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.

This division comes about because Jesus teaches a clear message of love for God and for all others. Not all of us ac- cept this message and allow it to form us. Instead we continue to those who love us in return, we continue help those who already have enough and we continue to see our own good in preference to the good of others. People who are stubborn and try to follow Jesus are often rejected as being rigid or too tough or even unrealistic. Surely in today’s politi- cal climate and cultural changes, a true Christian will be less and less acceptable. So many want to lessen the teachings of Jesus so that everyone will be happy, so that everyone will have the peace of no opposition.

Yet that kind of peace must be destroyed. Instead, the only peace that lasts comes from striving to do God’s will and to live in accordance with God’s words and God’s teachings in the Scriptures.

As we celebrate Eucharist this Sunday, let us ask for courage and strength to stand with the teachings of our Church— the teachings of Jesus Himself. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Yours in Prayer, David Caraway

RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

It’s that time of the year again and we will begin RCIA for the upcoming year. Anyone interested in exploring the possibility of becoming Catholic or inquiring about the Catholic Church is invited to join us for RCIA. RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the process by which the non-baptized and those baptized Christians of other faiths wish- ing to become Catholic can be brought into full communion with the Catholic Church through the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. It is also for any adult baptized Catholic, who has not yet celebrated the Sacra- ments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. RCIA will begin on Wednesday, August 28th at 7:00 pm. We will be meeting in the St. Luke meeting room next to the Borromeo Room. If you are interested in finding out more about the RCIA and join- ing us this year, please contact Ron Schumann at 504-909-6209, email [email protected], Deacon Michael Stohlman at 504-994-0448, email [email protected], or call the church office.

ARE YOU OR A FAMILY MEMBER BEING ADMITTED INTO THE HOSPITAL?

Jude will make every effort to visit you dur- ing your stay to meet your spiritual needs and to support you during this difficult time.

DID YOU KNOW…

Fr. Jared Rodrigue, parochial vicar at Mary Queen of Peace, is an alum of SCB having graduated 8th grade in 2005. He was in 5th grade when our beloved Pastor Fr. John Phuc tragically died accidentally while fishing. Like all of us, Jared was devastated but unlike all of us, he had a plan; to become a priest. When his 5th grade mind asked "Who will be our priest now?"... God an- swered. Ironically, he is currently in his first priestly as- signment serving with Pastor John Tran who is the cousin of Fr. John Phuc.

From Fr. Jared: "SCB is home. It was a place for asking questions about who I was and who God is; a place for answering those questions while discovering my own gifts and talents; and a place for learning just how my gifts and talents fit into God's plan. SCB is a place for forming saints...and a home for all those striving so to be."
