    2012 Cruiser PY List Cruiser Data: The Cruiser list of Portsmouth Numbers includes all data submitted to the RYA in the 2011 Portsmouth Yardstick return and is an accumulation of the previous three years data. Within each of these published numbers a confidence level has been given to each based on the quality of the data submitted and the quantity of the data submitted. This confidence level is based on the number of boats, clubs and races each configuration of each class has partaken in the previous PY Return. When using the numbers that are listed with a low or medium confidence level clubs are recommended to use these numbers as starting points and to adjust these to suit the racing be held at the individual clubs.     The Scorpion dinghy – the first fifty years Introduction The Scorpion is a lightweight, high performance, non-trapeze two person racing dinghy. Its adjustable rig enables sailing in nearly all weathers by crews of all weights, ages and experiences. The Scorpion was originally designed for launch and recovery through Cornish surf. It is 14ft long with a hard chine and planing hull and a symmetric spinnaker. It is built to strict class rules whilst rig controls and cockpit layout are left to personal choice. The ability to adjust the rig whilst sailing means that the Scorpion can be raced in most conditions. Its lightweight hull (81kg) gives it good performance and easy handling ashore. The ‘Scorpion’ was designed by Taprell Dorling in 1959. The prototype was launched at Porthpean Sailing Club in St Austell Bay in 1960. Its popularity was immediate and by its 50th anniversary over 2000, mostly wooden ‘Scorpions’, had been built. This is the history of the ‘Scorpion’ over that period. 1 Origins Taprell John Dorling was the proprietor of a small chandlery business, Collins Marine Equipment, which he ran from an office in the house of a friend, a Mr Churchouse in Barnes, West London. He had no intention of building them himself but instead granted licences to existing reputable boat builders, initially to Moores of Wroxham and Aln Boatyard at Alnmouth in Northumberland. In order to maintain standards, Dorling founded the Scorpion Class Association and incorporated into its constitution the requirement that professional boat builders should be licensed to build Scorpions on payment of a designer’s royalty to Taprell.

    Single handed Dabbing Part 3 Furling Gear and Trailers Performance I can’t help it but I race other boats when I'm in the Dabber. It happens like this. If I’m sailing down the estuary and spy a sail I will try to overtake it. The trouble is that the crew of the other vessel have no idea that it’s a race. They’re just enjoying a sail and watching the world go by while I’m working hard searching for catspaws, windshifts, wave sets and favourable eddies and making course, rig and centreboard adjustments to suit. On one occasion I remember following a reasonable sized cruiser about six miles along the coast before drawing abeam. I also remember the long beat back. It seems to me that on the Dabber there is one rig adjustment, apart from sheet trimming, which has an effect greater than any other. It’s difficult to be objective about this as you can’t detect an increase in speed of the order of tenths of a knot. My GPS shows tenths of a knot but won't be accurate to that level. You’d need initial accuracy coupled with fancy averaging to show what I’d like to see. The problem is that a boat’s speed is not constant and every variation in wind and every wave slows and accelerates the boat. It’s interesting to note that the performance difference between the earliest and the latest Flying Fifteens is reckoned to be only 40 seconds per hour. There is however, a very effective way to fine tune sailing performance and that is to race a one design.

    National Handicap for Cruisers (NHC) - Base List The NHC Base list should be used in conjunction with the "Rules and Guidance" document available on the rya website: www.rya.org.uk/racing/pages/nhc.aspx. The base list contains base numbers for a large number of designs. Where a design is not featured on the base list a club should get in contact with the RYA technical department ([email protected]). The base numbers should be used for boats taking part in a club sereis where a club number has not been developed. The base list should also be used to allocate base numbers to boats for their first race in a regatta sereis. It is important to take note of the design year as their may be 2 or more numbers for the same design may be available.
