FOREWORD I have much pleasure in introducing the Lohit Distri<^ Gazetteer, the first of a series of District Gazetteers proposed to be brought out by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. A'Gazetteer is a repository of care fully collected and systematically collated information on a wide range of subjects pertaining to a particular area. These information are of con siderable importance and interest. Since independence, Arunachal Pra desh has been making steady progress in various spheres. This north-east frontier comer of the country has, during these years, witnessed tremen dous changes in social, economic, political and cultural spheres. These changes are reflected in die Gazetteers. 1 hope that as a reflex of these changes, the Lohit District Gazetteer would prove to be quite useful not only to the administrators but also to researdi schplars and all those who are keen to know in detail about one of the districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The Emergence of the Mahajanapadas
The Emergence of the Mahajanapadas Sanjay Sharma Introduction In the post-Vedic period, the centre of activity shifted from the upper Ganga valley or madhyadesha to middle and lower Ganga valleys known in the contemporary Buddhist texts as majjhimadesha. Painted grey ware pottery gave way to a richer and shinier northern black polished ware which signified new trends in commercial activities and rising levels of prosperity. Imprtant features of the period between c. 600 and 321 BC include, inter-alia, rise of ‘heterodox belief systems’ resulting in an intellectual revolution, expansion of trade and commerce leading to the emergence of urban life mainly in the region of Ganga valley and evolution of vast territorial states called the mahajanapadas from the smaller ones of the later Vedic period which, as we have seen, were known as the janapadas. Increased surplus production resulted in the expansion of trading activities on one hand and an increase in the amount of taxes for the ruler on the other. The latter helped in the evolution of large territorial states and increased commercial activity facilitated the growth of cities and towns along with the evolution of money economy. The ruling and the priestly elites cornered most of the agricultural surplus produced by the vaishyas and the shudras (as labourers). The varna system became more consolidated and perpetual. It was in this background that the two great belief systems, Jainism and Buddhism, emerged. They posed serious challenge to the Brahmanical socio-religious philosophy. These belief systems had a primary aim to liberate the lower classes from the fetters of orthodox Brahmanism. -

Wilkinson: Configurations of the Indic States System 63 CONFIGURATIONS OF THE INDIC STATES SYSTEM David Wilkinson In his essay "De systematibus civitatum," Martin Wight sought to clari- fy Pufendorfs concept of states-systems, and in doing so "to formulate some of the questions or propositions which a comparative study of states-systems would examine." (1977:22) "States system" is variously defined, with variation especially as to the degrees of common purpose, unity of action, and mutually recognized legitima- cy thought to be properly entailed by that concept. As cited by Wight (1977:21-23), Heeren's concept is federal, Pufendorfs confederal, Wight's own one rather of mutuality of recognized legitimate independence. Montague Bernard's minimal definition—"a group of states having relations more or less permanent with one another"—begs no questions, and is adopted in this article. Wight's essay poses a rich menu of questions for the comparative study of states systems. -

Post-Mauryan Age - Crafts The age of the Shakas, the Kushanas, the Satavahanas (200 BCE - 200 CE) and the first Tamil states was the most flourishing period in the history of crafts and commerce in ancient India. • The Digha-Nikaya, which belongs to the pre-Mauryan times, mentions nearly two dozen occupations but the Mahavastu, which belongs to this period, catalogues 36 different kinds of workers living in the town of Rajgir. • The Milinda Panho (the questions of Milinda) mentions about 75 occupations, out of which 60 are connected with various kinds of crafts. • Craftsmen are mostly associated with towns in literary texts, but some excavations show that they also inhabited villages. • The field of mining and metallurgy made great advancements and specializations, as many as eight crafts were associated with the working of gold, silver, lead, tin, copper, brass, iron, precious stones and jewels. o The technological advancement in iron manufacturing is evident by the excavations of specialized iron artifacts from the Karimnagar and Nalgonda districts of the Telangana region. o Indian iron and steel including cutlery were exported to Abyssinian ports and enjoyed great prestige in western Asia. -

The Maratha scholars and historians had worked hard to construct the history of the land and people of Maharashtra. Among such scholars people like Kashinath Sane, Rajwade, Khare and Parasnis were well known luminaries in this field of history writing of Maratha. Kashinath Sane published a mass of original material like Bakhars, Sanads, letters and other state papers in his journal Kavyetihas Samgraha for more eleven years during the nineteenth century. MODULE - 1 Ancient India 5 Notes FROM JANAPADAS TO EMPIRE In the last chapter we studied how later Vedic people started agriculture in the Ganga basin and settled down in permanent villages. In this chapter, we will discuss how increased agricultural activity and settled life led to the rise of sixteen Mahajanapadas (large territorial states) in north India in sixth century BC. We will also examine the factors, which enabled Magadh one of these states to defeat all others to rise to the status of an empire later under the Mauryas. The Mauryan period was one of great economic and cultural progress. However, the Mauryan Empire collapsed within fifty years of the death of Ashoka. We will analyse the factors responsible for this decline. This period (6th century BC) is also known for the rise of many new religions like Buddhism and Jainism. We will be looking at the factors responsible for the emer- gence of these religions and also inform you about their main doctrines. OBJECTIVES After studying this lesson, you will be able to explain the material and social factors (e.g. growth of agriculture and new social classes), which became the basis for the rise of Mahajanapada and the new religions in the sixth century BC; analyse the doctrine, patronage, spread and impact of Buddhism and Jainism; trace the growth of Indian polity from smaller states to empires and list the six- teen Mahajanapadas; examine the role of Ashoka in the consolidation of the empire through his policy of Dhamma; recognise the main features– administration, economy, society and art under the Mauryas and Identify the causes of the decline of the Mauryan empire. -

Though Nandas established the first ever empire, covering almost area of present India, they were never recognized for the same. Almost Indian historians neglected their acheivements and have tried to reduce the span of their rule. The Nandas have been referred by distant people of ancient Iran and the classical writers of the Greece. Their strength has been narrated by the scholars who accompanied Alexander in India. Interesting to state that no evidences are available which could confirm the war, that took place between the last Nanda and Chandragupta. Even though the historians narrated the event stating it as a revolution by the people which ousted the last Nanda king. There are few Sanskrit chronicles which connected Chandragupta to Nanda King. These chronicles have stated that Chandragupta was the legitimate son of the last Nanda king. But Indian historians tried their best to present Buddhist evidences which state Chandragupta a resident of Pippalvana and related to Nandas any way. To devaluate the Nandas has created a big historical loss to our ancient history. The whole period from Indus valley civilization to the establishment of sixteen Mahajanapadas is still in the dark. -

UPSC Civil Services Examination UPSC Notes [GS-I] Topic: Harshavardhana [NCERT Notes on Ancient Indian History for UPSC] King Harshavardhana was also known as Harsha. He built a huge empire that extended from north & northwestern India till the Narmada in the South. His capital was Kannauj. His reforms and policies were generous and were always aimed at boosting the peace and prosperity of his people. King Harshavardhana deeds were praised by Chinese Buddhist traveller Xuanzang in his writings. Facts about King Harshavardhana (Reign: 606 A.D to 647 A.D.) Harshavardhana was born in 590 AD to King Prabhakaravardhana of Sthaneshvara (Thanesar, Haryana). He belonged to the Pushyabhuti also called Vardhana dynasty. He was a Hindu who later embraced Mahayana Buddhism. He was married to Durgavati. He had a daughter and two sons. His daughter married a king of Vallabhi whereas his sons were killed by his own minister. King Harshavardhana Ascension After Prabhakaravardhana died, his elder son Rajyavardhana ascended to the throne of Thanesar. Harsha had a sister, Rajyashri who was married to king Grahavarman of Kannauj. Sasanka, the Gauda king killed Grahavarman and kept Rajyashri prisoner. This prompted Rajyavardhana to fight against Sasanka. But Sasanka killed Rajyavardhana. This led the 16-year old Harshavardhana to ascend the throne of Thanesar in 606 AD. He vowed to avenge his brother’s murder and also rescue his sister. For this, he forged an alliance with Bhaskaravarman, the Kamarupa king. Harsha and Bhaskaravarman marched against Sasanka. Ultimately, Sasanka left for Bengal and Harsha became the king of Kannauj also. Empire of King Harshavardhana On acquiring Kannauj, Harsha united the two kingdoms of Thanesar and Kannauj. -

Sources Political and cultural history of the period from C 600 to 300 BCE is known for the first time by a possibility of comparing evidence from different kinds of literary sources. Buddhist and Jaina texts form an authentic source of the political history of ancient India. The first four books of Sutta pitaka -- the Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara nikayas -- and the entire Vinaya pitaka were composed between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. The Sutta nipata also belongs to this period. The Jaina texts Bhagavati sutra and Parisisthaparvan represent the tradition that can be used as historical source material for this period. The Puranas also provide useful information on dynastic history. A comparison of Buddhist, Puranic and Jaina texts on the details of dynastic history reveals more disagreement. This may be due to the fact that they were compiled at different times. Apart from indigenous literary sources, there are number of Greek and Latin narratives of Alexander’s military achievements. They describe the political situation prevailing in northwest on the eve of Alexander’s invasion. -

Reviews of Books Ibn Khaldun’s inconsistent scepticism and rationality, rejecting some but not all forms of magic and sorcery, (p. ) coupled with consistent religious faith is the leitmotif of Irwin’s intellectual portrait drawn from “another planet”. But is not this portrait consistent with the world of a medieval thinker? Would not any further rationalism be utter heresy? Ibn Khaldun’s conditional rationality prompts Irwin to join those who reject the view of Ibn Khaldun as ‘precursor’ of modern ideas. In the epilogue, com- ing back to the perspective from “another planet” announced in his introduction, Irwin candidly and refreshingly admits that he could not always understand Ibn Khaldun. Although he was one of the most outstanding figures of his age, Ibn Khaldun’s thoughts remained beyond the grasp of his contempor- aries. Robert Irwin sees him as a strikingly bleak and lonely figure (p. ), standing between the exceptional and the conventional, beyond categorisation. Deyell did not set out to answer this question, but rather to study a series of base gold coins of a post- Kidarite style, showing a stylized king sacrificing at an altar on one side and a seated female deity on the other.1 Sir Alexander Cunningham attributed these coins in to a “Naga” or “Karkotaka” dynasty of Kashmir. -

Miceli** Abstract: Throughout history, religious and political authorities have had a mysterious attraction to each other. Rulers have established state religions and adopted laws with religious origins, sometimes even claiming to have divine powers. We propose a political economy approach to theocracy, centered on the legitimizing relationship between religious and political authorities. Making standard assumptions about the motivations of these authorities, we identify the factors favoring the emergence of theocracy, such as the organization of the religion market, monotheism vs. polytheism, and strength of the ruler. We use two sets of data to test the implications of the model. We first use a unique data set that includes information on over three hundred polities that have been observed throughout history. We also use recently available cross-country data on the relationship between religious and political authorities to examine these issues in current societies. The results provide strong empirical support for our arguments about why in some states religious and political authorities have maintained independence, while in others they have integrated into a single entity. Intricacy of Certain Verses of Āryabhatīya and Jain Tradition
Intricacy of Certain Verses of Āryabhat ī ya and Jain Tradition – Identification of Asmaka as Sravanabelgola-Camravattam Jain Country K. Chandra Hari ƒ Abstract The conclusions that got derived from astronomical considerations about the homeland of Ārybhat a viz Camravattam (10N51, 75E45) is shown to receive additional support from the socio-cultural factors related to the Jaina tradition in Kerala and South India. It is shown that the A śmaka referred to by Bh āskara-I is the South Indian Jain settlement around Sravan abelgol a (12N51, 76E29) and Dharmasthala (12N53, 75E23) – place receiving the name A śmaka in Jaina canons because of the great stone monoliths at the place. A number of circumstantial evidences have been adduced in support of the above conclusions: (a) Verse 9 of K ālakriy ā giving the Jaina 12 fold division of Yuga (b) Verse 5 of Da śag ītik ā which speaks of Bharata, the first Universal emperor of Jains who accessed the throne from the Ādin ātha R s abhadeva at the beginning of Apasarpin ī Kaliyuga. Āryabhat a’s rejection of the 4:3:2:1 cycle of Kr t ādi yugas based on the Smr tis provide attestation to the new interpretation attempted of the verse (c) Verse 11 of Gol a referring to Nandana-vana and Meru represents terminology borrowed from Tiloyapan n atti of Jains (d) References to Bramah the primordial deity of Jains in verses 1 of Gan it ā and 49, 50 of Gol a (e) Use of Kali Era having the distinct signature of Aryabhata for the first time in South India with the Aihole inscription of the C ālukya King Pulike śi-II.
