When Sweden invaded Poland, in June 1655, it went to war with an army which reflected not only the state’s military and cultural strengths but also its fiscal weaknesses. During 1655 the Swedes won great successes in Poland and captured most of the country. But a series of military decisions transformed the Swedish army from a concentrated, combined-arms force into a mobile but widely dispersed force. -
London and Middlesex in the 1660S Introduction: the Early Modern
London and Middlesex in the 1660s Introduction: The early modern metropolis first comes into sharp visual focus in the middle of the seventeenth century, for a number of reasons. Most obviously this is the period when Wenceslas Hollar was depicting the capital and its inhabitants, with views of Covent Garden, the Royal Exchange, London women, his great panoramic view from Milbank to Greenwich, and his vignettes of palaces and country-houses in the environs. His oblique birds-eye map- view of Drury Lane and Covent Garden around 1660 offers an extraordinary level of detail of the streetscape and architectural texture of the area, from great mansions to modest cottages, while the map of the burnt city he issued shortly after the Fire of 1666 preserves a record of the medieval street-plan, dotted with churches and public buildings, as well as giving a glimpse of the unburned areas.1 Although the Fire destroyed most of the historic core of London, the need to rebuild the burnt city generated numerous surveys, plans, and written accounts of individual properties, and stimulated the production of a new and large-scale map of the city in 1676.2 Late-seventeenth-century maps of London included more of the spreading suburbs, east and west, while outer Middlesex was covered in rather less detail by county maps such as that of 1667, published by Richard Blome [Fig. 5]. In addition to the visual representations of mid-seventeenth-century London, a wider range of documentary sources for the city and its people becomes available to the historian. -

This is a report from a committee of MPs to Parliament. It explains their actions against the leaders of the Levellers. One of the men they arrested was John Lilburne, a key figure in the Leveller movement. What’s the background to this source? Before the war of the 1640s it was difficult and dangerous to come up with new ideas and try to publish them. However, during the Civil War censorship was not strongly enforced. Many political groups emerged with new ideas at this time. One of the most radical (extreme) groups was the Levellers. -

A Jamestown Timeline Christopher Columbus never reached the shores of the North American Continent, but European explorers learned three things from him: there was someplace to go, there was a way to get there, and most importantly, there was a way to get back. Thus began the European exploration of what they referred to as the “New World”. The following timeline details important events in the establishment of the fi rst permanent English settlement in America – Jamestown, Virginia. PRELIMINARY EVENTS 1570s Spanish Jesuits set up an Indian mission on the York River in Virginia. They were killed by the Indians, and the mission was abandoned. Wahunsonacock (Chief Powhatan) inherited a chiefdom of six tribes on the upper James and middle York Rivers. By 1607, he had conquered about 25 other tribes. 1585-1590 Three separate voyages sent English settlers to Roanoke, Virginia (now North Carolina). On the last voyage, John White could not locate the “lost” settlers. 1602 Captain Bartholomew Gosnold explored New England, naming some areas near and including Martha’s Vineyard. 1603 Queen Elizabeth I died; James VI of Scotland became James I of England. EARLY SETTLEMENT YEARS 1606, April James I of England granted a charter to the Virginia Company to establish colonies in Virginia. The charter named two branches of the Company, the Virginia Company of London and the Virginia Company of Plymouth. 1606, December 20 Three ships – Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery – left London with 105 men and boys to establish a colony in Virginia between 34 and 41 degrees latitude. 1607, April 26 The three ships sighted the land of Virginia, landed at Cape Henry (present day Virginia Beach) and were attacked by Indians. -

Introduction “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, inreproaches,innecessities,inpersecu- tions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for whenIamweak,thenamIstrong”- 2 Corinthians 12:10 The above quotation perfectly describes the female visionary writers discussed in this study, namely women who when confronted with cultural restrictions and negative stereotypes, found a voice of their own against all odds. By using their so-called infirmities, such as weakness and illness and the reproaches against them, they were able to turn these into strengths. Rather than stay- ing silent, these women wrote and published, thereby turning their seeming frailties into powerful texts. The focus of the following investigation revolves around two English visionary writers from the Middle Ages Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe as well as several female prophets such as Anna Trapnel, Anne Wentworth and Katherine Chidley from the seventeenth century. That period, particularly the decades between the 1640s and the 1660s, saw many revolutionary changes. In addition to such significant events as the behead- ing of Charles I in 1649 and the introduction of Cromwell’s Protectorate in 1653, “the extensive liberty of the press in England [...] may have [made it] easier for eccentrics to get into print than ever before or since” (Hill, The World Turned Upside Down 17). Indeed, according to Phyllis Mack, over 300 female vi- sionaries were able to use the absence of censorship at that time to voice their concerns and write about their lives and circumstances in prophetic writings (218). In addition to the absence of censorship the mode of prophecy was often used by these female visionaries in order to voice their concerns and ideas. -

Puritan New England: Plymouth A New England for Puritans The second major area to be colonized by the English in the first half of the 17th century, New England, differed markedly in its founding principles from the commercially oriented Chesapeake tobacco colonies. Settled largely by waves of Puritan families in the 1630s, New England had a religious orientation from the start. In England, reform-minded men and women had been calling for greater changes to the English national church since the 1580s. These reformers, who followed the teachings of John Calvin and other Protestant reformers, were called Puritans because of their insistence on purifying the Church of England of what they believed to be unscriptural, Catholic elements that lingered in its institutions and practices. Many who provided leadership in early New England were educated ministers who had studied at Cambridge or Oxford but who, because they had questioned the practices of the Church of England, had been deprived of careers by the king and his officials in an effort to silence all dissenting voices. Other Puritan leaders, such as the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop, came from the privileged class of English gentry. These well-to-do Puritans and many thousands more left their English homes not to establish a land of religious freedom, but to practice their own religion without persecution. Puritan New England offered them the opportunity to live as they believed the Bible demanded. In their “New” England, they set out to create a model of reformed Protestantism, a new English Israel. The conflict generated by Puritanism had divided English society because the Puritans demanded reforms that undermined the traditional festive culture. -

The answer to that question will depend both on the type of Baptist one may be considering and also upon the place in time where one ˜nds the Baptists. Seventh Day Baptists emphasize the seventh day as the time of worship. Particular Baptists in England were strongly Calvinistic in their doctrinal statements. Southern Baptists in America have empha- sized ˜nancial cooperation as a means of ful˜lling the great commission. British Baptists have normally looked with favor upon participation in the ecumenical movement with other Christian groups. Southern Baptists have been critical and skeptical of ecumenical involvement. Baptists in the American south have often dominated the culture of their communities. Baptists in Asia constitute a tiny minority. Baptists in Amer- ica and in western Europe have normally faced little persecution. The vig- orous spiritual life of Romanian Baptists has been molded by their poverty and persecution. Walter Rauschenbusch, theologian of the social gospel, belonged to an American Baptist church. Nobel Prize winner Martin Luther King came from a Black Baptist background. Evangelist Billy Graham lives in North Carolina but belongs to the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas. What is a Baptist? It all depends on the time in which you live and the group with which you worship. I. WHAT IS A PURITAN? What is a Puritan? Scholars struggle to de˜ne this virile religious move- ment. The term possesses an elastic meaning that has even been used to refer to some religious leaders of the twentieth century. -

Lund* In ways almost beyond counting, our legal system treats religion dif- ferently, subjecting it both to certainprotections and certain disabili- ties. Developing the specifics of those protections and disabilities, along with more general theories tying the specifics together andjus- tifying them collectively, has long been the usual stuff of debate among courts and commentators. Those debates still continue. But in recent years, increasinglypeople have asked a slightly different question-whether religion should be singled out for special treatment at all, in any context, for any pur- pose. Across the board, but especially in the context of religious ex- emptions from generally applicable laws, many have come to doubt religion's distinctiveness. And traditional defenses of religion's dis- tinctiveness have been rejected as unpersuasive or religiously parti- san. This Article offers a defense of our legal tradition and its special treatment of religion. Religious freedom can be justified on religion- neutral grounds; it serves the same kinds of values as other rights (like freedom of speech). -

Blakemore1 Introduction Pirates are popular. Inside academia and out, the pirate is a figure command- ing attention, fascination and quite often sympathy. Interpreted in various ways – as vicious criminals, romantic heroes, sexual revolutionaries or anarchistic opponents of capitalism – pirates possess an apparently inexhaustible appeal.2 The problem with “pirates,” of course, is that defining them is largely a ques- tion of perspective: perpetrators of maritime violence from Francis Drake to Blackbeard have been seen as both champions and murderers, and scholars have interrogated this very dimension of piracy as a historical concept. -

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned chiefly with the military role of sea power during the English Civil War. Parliament’s seizure of the Royal Navy in 1642 is examined in detail, with a discussion of the factors which led to the King’s loss of the fleet and the consequences thereafter. It is concluded that Charles I was outmanoeuvred politically, whilst Parliament’s choice to command the fleet, the Earl of Warwick, far surpassed him in popularity with the common seamen. The thesis then considers the advantages which control of the Navy provided for Parliament throughout the war, determining that the fleet’s protection of London, its ability to supply besieged outposts and its logistical support to Parliamentarian land forces was instrumental in preventing a Royalist victory. Furthermore, it is concluded that Warwick’s astute leadership went some way towards offsetting Parliament’s sporadic neglect of the Navy. The thesis demonstrates, however, that Parliament failed to establish the unchallenged command of the seas around the British Isles. -
