Here we are going into our third month of preschool already. November is a busy month for the pre- school. We have our fall Parent/Teacher conferences the 7th- 9th, our Thanksgiving Teas on the 17th and 18th, and Thanksgiving break the 23rd- 25th. When we return from Thanksgiving break the preschool staff will be drawing names for our secret Santa gift ex- change already! The teachers have been working hard on preparations for conferences and the busy day to day ac- tivities in the classroom. It can be difficult to complete assessments on every child while still doing daily lesson plans, so I volunteer as much time as I can in the classrooms to try to help. As for me, I’ve been busy with Quickbooks, updating our website, working on paperwork, and con- ducting day to day operations of the building while maintaining licensing regulations. Our enrollment remains low, 111 students. We have a great group of children this year and every time I visit a classroom it seems so calm and efficient. No doubt that our awesome teachers are contributing to this classroom environment with their teaching skills. Have a great month,

ACTS OF FAITH Rehearsals for “All About That Baby”, have begun! Acts of Faith is an intentional com- munity of young people, from 2nd – 12th grades. The group meets on Sundays, from 4:00 – 5:30 while they are preparing for a musical. During those meetings, the children have devotions, enjoy fellowship over a snack, create the scenery and costumes for the musical and, of course, rehearse. Our Christmas musical will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 17, in the afternoon, and during worship on Sunday, Dec. 18. Please contact Pastor Beth or Leah Fearing if your child would like to participate. We need singers/dancers/actors/set builders/decorators & costumers. Or, to put it another way, there’s something for everyone! The participants in Acts of Faith are in the care of skilled adult mentors at all times. Come join us for a unique and fun expression of our life together in Jesus. STORY C It has been such a privilege to see the O R children and youth grow up in this N congregation! As we start another year of E Acts of Faith it has been amazing to see the R older kids take ownership and leadership roles in this ministry. Not only are they lead- ing, but they are also coming alongside the new children to show them the way. This ownership of the ministry here at David is what builds life- long faith in our children and youth!

Thanks to Charlotte Wilson, and her team, for leading our students through a fun and educational journey through the Reformation on Oct. 30! We’ll be returning to our age-based classrooms to learn about the birth of Jesus during the Sundays of Advent, as we prepare for our Christmas Musical on December 18th. We’re always looking for more teachers/helpers. If you would like to give teaching a try, as a substitute, or would like to join one of our teaching teams, please see Pastor Beth.

The Adult Morning Bible Study meets Monday mornings at 11:00 am. This fall, they are read- ing and reflecting on the books of First and Second Samuel. The study is informative, the conversations delightful and the fellowship rich. Come for the blessings.

The David’s Way Bible Study This delightful group is composed of David’s Way residents, community friends and a few DELC members. We are cur- rently exploring the stories of life, death and resurrection of Jesus in each of the four Gospels. Each lesson is illustrated with a video of Joe Castillo’s sand art presentations. We meet every Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the com- mon room at David’s Way and new friends are always welcome! Pastor Beth is happy to answer any questions about this group.

Forever Young Bible Study meets at the church on Wednesdays at noon for a brown bag lunch Bible study. This very informal group provides a great opportunity to share lunch with some faithful friends, check-in with each other, and spend some time immersed in God’s Word. We join the Forever Young luncheon group when they meet. We are currently study- ing the Gospels, illustrated with videos of Joe Castillo’s sand art presentations. Please con- sider joining us for this unique look at the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

BELONG is a live event bringing together women who crave a deeper connection with each other, their community, their purpose, passion and dreams in arenas across the country. Thousands of women will gather together to hear remarkable communicators hone in on how to live a fun, faith-filled, purposeful life. David Lutheran Church is excited to be hosting the live simulcast of the BELONG tour from Charlotte, NC on Friday November 4th and Saturday November 5th. We will be streaming this live event in our sanctu- ary for any and all women within our community to share and experience with one another. The event runs Friday night from 7:00PM to 10:00PM. Saturday’s session begins at 9:00AM and the event con- cludes at 3:00PM. One of the “perks” of attending this simulcast event is that you do not need to be pre- sent for the entire event. You are free to come and go based on your own personal schedule these two days. There is no cost to attend, although we will be taking a free-will offering from those attending. No regis- tration is necessary but, if you know you’re coming, please sign the sheet on the office door or respond to the Facebook event. This will give us an idea of how many to expect to attend. EVERY MEMBER CONTACT CONTINUES: During our last round of Listening Posts, members ex- pressed a desire for more direct communication through the phone tree, or some form of broadcast e-mail/ text messages. In order to do this efficiently, we have upgraded our congregational data management soft- ware. Since any database is only as good as the information it contains, our next step is to make sure we have accurate contact information for every member of the congregation. During the month of October, many of you updated your information at davidlutheran.org, or on a paper form at the church. Thank you for taking the time to do that for us! NOW, IT’S TIME FOR PHASE 2: During November, a team of members will be contacting everyone who has not responded. This is an excellent opportunity for outreach to inactive members, gathering infor- mation about members who have moved away or begun attending other congregations, and updating our records for better congregational communication. Please take a moment to visit with us when we call. THERE’S STILL TIME TO COMPLETE THE INFORMATION FORM ONLINE (davidlutheran.org), OR ON PAPER AT THE CHURCH. If you have questions, we’ll be happy to help you in the church office. Thank you, Molly McFerrin, for agreeing to coordinate the phone team. If you would like to make some phone calls for us, please contact Molly or Pastor Beth.

—Compiled by Gail Heffner-Charles As we make our plans for the holidays of the month of November, it is Thanksgiving Day that always seems to be on the top of the list. Shopping lists are made, and fresh turkeys are ordered (or tossed into the freezer to wait for the feast). Many of us forget to practice any type of self-control as we stuff ourselves and enjoy the gathering of family and friends. But the first Thanksgiving Day probably was a lot less glorious. And in today’s world, many people do not enjoy a huge meal, or any meal, for that matter. We begin to see how blessed we are— that many of us actually do celebrate with a Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. It is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving in Canada falls on the same day as Columbus Day in the United States. Be- cause of the long-standing traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends into the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated. In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition traces its origins to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. There is also evidence for an earlier harvest celebration on the continent by Spanish explorers in Florida during 1565, as well as thanksgiving feasts in the Vir- ginia Colony. The initial thanksgiving observance at Virginia in 1619 was prompted by the colonists' leaders on the anniversary of the settlement. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. In later years, the tradition was continued by civil leaders such as Governor Brad- ford who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623. While initially, the Plymouth colony did not have enough food to feed half of the 102 colonists, the Wampanoag Native Americans helped the Pilgrims by providing seeds and teaching them to fish. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival like this however, did not become a regular affair in New until the late 1660s. According to historian Jeremy Bangs, director of the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, the Pilgrims may have been influenced by watching the annual services of Thanksgiving for the relief of the siege of Leiden in 1574, while they were staying in Leiden. The claim of where the first Thanksgiving was held in the United States, and even the has often been a subject of debate. Author and teacher Robyn Gioia and Michael Gannon, of the University of Florida, have argued that the earliest attested "Thanksgiving" celebration in what is now the United States was celebrated by the Spanish on , 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida. Similarly, many historians point out that the first thanksgiving celebration in the United States was held in Virginia, and not in Plymouth. Thanksgiving services were routine in what was to become the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607. A day of Thanksgiving was codified in the founding charter of Berkeley Hundred in Charles City County, Virginia in 1619. Fixing the date of the holiday The reason for the earlier Thanksgiving celebrations in Canada has often been attributed to the earlier onset of winter in the north, thus ending the harvest season earlier. Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century. Prior to Canadian confederation, many of the individual colonial governors of the Canadian provinces had declared their own days of Thanksgiving. The first official Canadian Thanksgiving occurred on April 15, 1872 when the nation was celebrating the Prince of Wales' recovery from a serious illness. By the end of the 19th Century, Thanksgiving Day was normally celebrated on November 6. However, when World War I ended, the Armistice Day holiday were usually held during the same week. To prevent the two holidays from clashing with one another, in 1957 the Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving to be observed on its present date on the second Monday of October. Since 1971, when the American Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect, the American observance of Columbus Day has coincided with the Canadian observance of Thanksgiving.

The first Thanksgiving which was celebrated on a fixed day was in 1863, in an effort by President Abraham Lincoln (who in turn was influenced by the campaigning of author Sarah Josepha Hale) to foster a sense of American unity between the Northern and Southern states. By the beginning of the 20th century, the final Thursday in November had become the customary day of Thanksgiving in most U.S. states. It was not until , 1941, however, that President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after pushing two years earlier to move the date earlier to give the country an economic boost, signed a bill into law with Congress, making Thanksgiving a national holiday and settling it to the fourth (but not always final) Thursday in November. Adapted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving Our hymn for this month is We Come to the Hungry Feast by Ray Makeever. It is found in the blue hymnal, With One Voice, #766. The words talk about our “hungers” for: world peace, no more famine, and the end of poverty and suffering. While this may not at first sound like a hymn for Thanksgiving, it does make us stop and think of all our own blessings. As we come to the communion table to “feast” with the Lord, and have our sins forgiven, we begin to real- ize how blessed we are, and even though at the Lord’s table (as well as our own table) we “eat our fill”—we realize that the hunger continues all around us and within us. Per- haps it is one of the best hymns to get us thinking about God’s plan for us, and what He wants us to do to help others less fortunate. Ray Makeever is a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, BA Biology and Luther Seminary, MDiv, who left the pastoral ministry to take up folk singing in his mid-thirties. After a few years away from the institutional church, he returned to the fold and began writing biblically-based songs and liturgical music for worship and congregational life. He self-published three books of songs, With All Your Heart, Open the Door, and Walk Across the Water, before Augsburg Fortress Publish- ers released Dancing at the Harvest, a book and CD collection of his work, in 1997. As a singer, guitarist, flautist, and song-and-worship leader, Ray travels to congregations and confer- ences to teach and lead the songs he has written. He is currently employed as a lay Associate for Music and Worship with Augsburg College campus ministry and as Music Director at Trinity Lutheran Congregation. Ray also holds a certificate in Human Relations from the Richmond Fel- lowship in , England, is certified in massage therapy, and is a bicycle commuter and a joyful juggler. At present his life is filled with his daughter, Sophia Ray, born , l998, who he is raising with his wife, Linda Breitag. He is also the proud father of Anya Jane Thomson, and grandfather of Joli and Sean Thomson.
