Oral Tradition, 2/1 (1987): 188-213 The Ramist Style of John Udall: Audience and Pictorial Logic in Puritan Sermon and Controversy John G. Rechtien With Wilbur Samuel Howell’s Logic and Rhetoric in England, 1500-1700 (1956), Walter J. Ong’s Ramus, Method, and the Decay of Dialogue (1958) helped establish the common contemporary view that Ramism impoverished logic and rhetoric as arts of communication.1 For example, scholars agree that Ramism neglected audience accomodation; denied truth as an object of rhetoric by reserving it to logic; rejected persuasion about probabilities; and relegated rhetoric to ornamentation.2 Like Richard Hooker in Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity (I.vi.4), these scholars criticize Ramist logic as simplistic. Their objections identify the consequences of Ramus’ visual analogy of logic and rhetoric to “surfaces,” which are “apprehended by sight” and divorced from “voice and hearing” (Ong 1958:280). As a result of his analogy of knowledge and communication to vision rather than to sound, Ramus left rhetoric only two of its fi ve parts, ornamentation (fi gures of speech and tropes) and delivery (voice and gesture). He stripped three parts (inventio, dispositio, and memory) from rhetoric. Traditionally shared by logic and rhetoric, the recovery and derivation of ideas (inventio) and their organization (dispositio) were now reserved to logic. Finally, Ramus’ method of organizing according to dichotomies substituted “mental space” for memory (Ong 1958:280). In the context of this new logic and the rhetoric dependent on it, a statement was not recognized as a part of a conversation, but appeared to stand alone as a speech event fi xed in space. -

Laurence Chaderton – Puritan, Scholar and Bible Translator In this age of rediscovery of the Puritans it is surprising that the name of Laurence Chaderton has not become better known. He could certainly be placed amongst the first rank of Puritan scholars and preachers, yet it is doubtless due to the fact that his published works were so few that he has not been granted the place he deserves. It is the aim of this brief article to go some way to redress the balance. Devotion to Study and Preaching Laurence was born the son of Edmund Chaderton in the parish of Oldham, Lancashire, around the year 1536. The Chadertons were a well-to-do family of Catholic persuasion. Edmund was a most fervent papist and to ensure that Laurence followed in his footsteps he employed a priest to educate his son. The boy showed much promise, especially in Latin and Greek. He was sent to the Inns of Court in London to embark on the study of law. Soon after leaving home, Chaderton was first exposed to the evangelical faith, which he was shortly to adopt as his own. Upon this he abandoned all thought of a legal career, and in 1564 he was admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge, for the study of divinity. His father did not respond well to these changes in his son. He ceased all further financial support for his studies and disinherited him. Yet through divine providence Chaderton was able to continue his academic pursuits unabated. In addition to theology, he devoted himself to the study of Hebrew, quickly becoming proficient in that language. -

We travel north of the border to study that understated contribution to Scottish Congregationalism, the Evangelical Union, explicitly through its academy. Lastly, like many others in 2011, we turn aside to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible. In this magazine, our examination of this Jacobean masterpiece involves a consideration of its origins, amid the demands for further reform of the established church, and the growth of those forerunners of Congregationalism, the English separatists. Lund* In ways almost beyond counting, our legal system treats religion dif- ferently, subjecting it both to certainprotections and certain disabili- ties. Developing the specifics of those protections and disabilities, along with more general theories tying the specifics together andjus- tifying them collectively, has long been the usual stuff of debate among courts and commentators. Those debates still continue. But in recent years, increasinglypeople have asked a slightly different question-whether religion should be singled out for special treatment at all, in any context, for any pur- pose. Across the board, but especially in the context of religious ex- emptions from generally applicable laws, many have come to doubt religion's distinctiveness. And traditional defenses of religion's dis- tinctiveness have been rejected as unpersuasive or religiously parti- san. This Article offers a defense of our legal tradition and its special treatment of religion. Religious freedom can be justified on religion- neutral grounds; it serves the same kinds of values as other rights (like freedom of speech). -

Early Baptists in Leicestershire and Rutland (IV) PARTICULAR BAPTISTS; LATER DEVELOPMENTS Kilby-Amesby The origin of the Kilby-Arnesby church in south Leicestershir~ owes little if anything to the Baptist churches described so far.l It was led by Richard Farmer of Kilby, lind seems to have been organ ised ID the wake of the Act of Uniformity of 1662. It quickly became widespread, and maintained congregational church government, be lievers' baptism, personal election, and the final perseverance of God's people. Farmer's father Richard was for some years a Kilby churchwarden,2 as was his own son Richard.3 How often did families that produced churchwardens also produce Nonconformist leaders at critical times like 1662? Other instances among seventeenth century Midland Bap tists are the Curtises of Harringworth, Northamptonshire, and Na thaniel Locking of Asterby, Lincolnshire.4 Our Richard, a "yeoman"5 and "gent.",6 traded in silk. 7 He was a keen student,8 and left "unto my Sonne Isaack all my Books Except Phisick and Schirorgury Books", which went to his daughter Anne. Whatever theological works he owned went to the only child to join their father's church.9 Richard was buried in July, 1688, in Kilby parish churchyard.10 Farmer's influence was such that he spent three weeks in the county gaol during Monmouth's rebellion,l1 and distraint of goods for breach es of the Conventicle Act cost him £110 one year. 12 Although his meetings were called "Anabaptist" in 1669, his first licences, in November, 1672, as teacher at his own house in Kilby, were as "Congr[egationalist]".13 Houses at Wigston Magna, Fleckney, Tur Langton, and possibly Leicester, were licensed similarly at the same time. -
William Perkins and Reformation Through the Instruction of Preachers in Elizabethan Puritanism
WILLIAM PERKINS AND REFORMATION THROUGH THE INSTRUCTION OF PREACHERS IN ELIZABETHAN PURITANISM ALEXANDRU V. STROIE * ABSTRACT. This paper envisages a clearer presentation of Perkins’ authority as a Reformation preacher mainly by pointing to his humane face, his mundane attitude towards both the royalty and the High Church of his time, precisely because, as it is well known nowadays, preaching back then had no rival in terms of entertainment, and people travelled great lengths in order to listen to sermons given in person. We will thus ascertain Perkins as a Puritan preacher that, exactly as expected of him, set forth to acknowledge the shortcomings in what adequate preaching should be, to expose the decline of preaching in his time, and to encourage the formation of a new generation of servants. All these efforts, combined with his task of presenting theological topics weekly for a general audience—which indelibly marked the lives of his listeners, constitute the traits without which Perkins’ personality would not be whole today. KEY WORDS: Perkins, Puritanism, Reformation, simplicity, humanity Introduction William Perkins lived during the reign of Elizabeth I, a time of change from many points of view, but especially a time of change for the Church. We will discover a Church of England that is in the process of reformation and because of that, a new emphasis on the value and importance of serious and competent preaching of the Word, but with an inappropriate and untrained clergy for this task, an aging clergyman, confused by historical circumstances, and whose role was to administrate the Sacraments, not the exposure of the Word. -

IntroductionI Step into Ballymena's past with self-guided Churchyard Trails The Ballymena area is dotted with a diverse range of churchyards reflecting the fluid and constantly evolving nature of religious sites from the late 400s onwards. Each site offers a different experience and has its own unique story to tell within the wider history of the area. This booklet features two distinct trails. Pre-Reformation Trail The Pre-Reformation Trail explores the history of some of the oldest remaining traces of built heritage in the area. It highlights sites that have been used for Christian worship from the time of St Patrick and before the formation of the Protestant faith in the early 1500s. Covenanter Trail The Covenanter Trail delves into the distinctive history and associated sites of the 'Covenanters', or Reformed Presbyterian Church, in the local area. Covenanters were named after the National Covenant and the Solemn League and Covenant signed in Scotland in the mid 1600s. In 1644 the Solemn League and Covenant was brought to Ireland and signed in 26 places across Ulster, including Ballymena. These documents declared Presbyterianism to be the only true form of church government and insisted that the King should have no authority over the church.
