The article is based on a research project comprising three studies: a qualitative study, an analysis of websites and information material, and an internet-based survey. The results highlight the important role played by the parishes for older visitors, in terms of providing community, support and religious services. However, people above the age of 65 were virtually invisible on the church websites and in other information material. This paradox will be discussed and the concept of ageism is used in the analysis. Keywords: migration, older people, ageism, the Church of Sweden, ethnic congregations Introduction Since the 1990s, a growing body of literature has revealed that migrants may contact and become involved with immigrant religious congregations for a variety of reasons (Cadge & Howard Ecklund, 2006; Furseth, 2008) and that the consequences of such involvement are multifaceted. -

Baptists Churches in Europe: The Creation of a Community [SLIDE 1] I want to trace some themes that I see as I look at the development of Baptist life in Europe – in mainland Europe. I will give some examples under each of these themes. So this is different from the geographical arrangement of my book, Communities of Conviction . The nineteenth century saw remarkable Baptist advance in mainland Europe, the leading figure in this advance being Johann Oncken (1800-1884), [SLIDE 2] an outstandingly gifted pastor in Hamburg who has been seen as the father of continental Baptists. One of Oncken’s most famous statements, which helped to shape German and European Baptist life, was that ‘we consider every member a missionary’, and he also viewed every church as a mission society. Prior to 1834, the year in which Oncken was baptised, organised Baptist life was virtually non-existent on the continent of Europe, whereas by 1900 there were about 220,000 members in Baptist churches and many more attending those churches. I want to bring in other strands of European Baptist life as well as the German Baptist story to illustrate my points about Baptist developments. I will not touch on the Italian story, as that is being covered, but I see in the Italian story many of the same developments. 1. Baptists drew from existing movements of spiritual renewal This means that there was a strong indigenous element in Baptist life. Baptist churches in mainland Europe are not to be seen as simply an import from outside. The story of Baptist beginnings in France provides an example of how an existing spiritual impetus prepared the way for Baptist life. -

There are few main problems in the history of Western art, from the age of manuscripts to the age of movies, which have not received the benefit of Pan's learned, pointed, and playful pen. From this point of view, therefore, almost any subject would provide a suitable opportunity for building on foundations already laid by him to whom we all wish to pay homage. The task becomes at once more difficult if, in addition to this, more specific aims are to be considered. A Swede, for instance, wishing to see the art and culture of his own country play apart in this work, the association with which is itself an honor, would first of all have to ask himself if anything within his own national field of vision would have a meaning in this truly international context. From sight-seeing in the company of Erwin Panofsky during his memorable visit to Sweden in 1952 I recall some monuments and works of art in our country in which he took an enthusiastic interest and pleasure.' But considering them as illustrations for this volume, I have to realize that they are not of the international standard appropriate for such a concourse of contributors and readers from two continents. -

Now we go back to the continent of Europe and to England for this lesson. The prayer I will open with comes from the prayer book of the Church of England, from what is called “The Lesser Peace and Fast.” One of the celebration days on the church calendar of the Church of England has to do with a man whose name will come up in today’s lesson, Charles Simeon. On that particular day in the prayer book, this prayer relates to the life and testimony of Charles Simeon. So, as we begin this lesson, I would like for us to use this prayer, thanking the Lord for Simeon and other faithful ministers whom we will be talking about during this time. Let us pray. O loving Lord, we know that all things are ordered by Thine unswerving wisdom and unbounded love. Grant us in all things to see Thy hand, that following the example of Charles Simeon, we may walk with Christ with all simplicity and serve Thee with a quiet and contented mind through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and with the Holy Spirit—one God forever and ever. Amen. As we think about the history of Christianity in England in the nineteenth century, we begin, of course, with the Church of England, and we begin with the Broad Church. In one of Henry Fielding’s novels, he has a character who says this, “When I mention religion, I mean the Christian religion and not only the Christian religion but the Protestant religion and not only the Protestant religion but the Church of England.” And that was probably the attitude of many people who were members of the church in England in the nineteenth century, particularly members of what was called the Broad Church or adherents to the Broad Church philosophy. -

Hall \ THE MISSIONARY SPIRIT IN THE AUGUSTANA CHURCH The American church is made up of many varied groups, depending on origin, divisions, changing relationships. One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintain ing an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as it was formed it began to widen its field. Then its representatives were found in In dia, Puerto Rico, in China. The horizons grew to include Africa and Southwest Asia. Two World Wars created havoc, but also national and international agencies. -

Expansion of the Reformation in Europe and the rise of Pietism •Luther's teachings became the dominant form of Protestant Christianity in Northern Europe, not only in Germany, but throughout Scandinavia. •In the later Middle Ages, the cultural ties between these two regions, which were linked by trade and similarities in language, had been strong. •Scandinavia was sparsely populated, and had only a few universities. •Many Scandinavian scholars regularly enrolled in German universities and thus became familiar with the Reformation teachings in the early sixteenth century.2 •When they returned to their homelands, they brought with them knowledge of Luther's ideas, and encouraged the monarchs of Sweden and Denmark to adopt evangelical reforms. •In 1527, the Swedish Parliament voted to break its ties with Rome, and a council held two years later prepared the way for a reform of Sweden's church. •In Denmark the pattern was similar, although the adoption of Lutheranism occurred slightly later. •At first, a national parliament meeting at Odense granted recognition to Lutherans, while protecting the rights of Catholics. 3 •Denmark's monarch, though, favored Lutheranism, as did the nobility, who stood to benefit from the crown's abolition of Catholic monasteries and the sale of their lands. •After a brief civil war, Protestantism triumphed in Denmark in 1536. •The king called one of Luther's close associates, Johann Bugenhagen, to Denmark to advise him on how to institute Lutheran reforms. •These new Evangelical Lutheran churches adopted essentially conservative reforms. 4 •By 1539 the Danish church became a national church with the king as the head and the clergy as leaders in matters of faith, much like the Church of England. -
