This document discusses the relationship between trumpet and percussion over the past centuries, the development of music for trumpet and percussion ensembles, trumpet and percussion in twentieth-century chamber music and the creation of music for trumpet and marimba. A listing of all known trumpet and percussion duos is included. An exploration of the development of the Wilder Duo and a listing of all known trumpet and marimba duos is also included. There are analyses of works by Gordon Stout, Paul Turok and Alec Wilder. These analyses examine sound, form, harmony, melody and rhythm for each piece. Musical illustrations are included. These analyses are divided into chapters. Each chapter begins with a short biography of each composer. A short description of each work is also given. Summaries are included at the end of each analytical chapter. Copyright 2007 by Christopher C.     PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Wolfgang Mozart Born January 27, 1756, Salzburg, Austria. Died December 5, 1791, Vienna, Austria. Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622 Mozart composed this concerto between the end of September and mid-November 1791, and it apparently was performed in Vienna shortly afterwards. The orchestra consists of two flutes, two bassoons, two horns, and strings. Performance time is approximately twenty-nine minutes. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s first performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto was given at the Ravinia Festival on July 25, 1957, with Reginald Kell as soloist and Georg Solti conducting. The Orchestra’s first subscription concert performance was given at Orchestra Hall on May 2, 1963, with Clark Brody as soloist and Walter Hendl conducting. Our most recent subscription concert performances were given on October 11 and 12, 1991, with Larry Combs as soloist and Sir Georg Solti conducting. The Orchestra most recently performed this concerto at the Ravinia Festival on July 15, 2001, with Larry Combs as soloist and Sir Andrew Davis conducting. This concerto is the last important work Mozart finished before his death. He recorded it in his personal catalog without a date, right after The Magic Flute and La clemenza di Tito. The only later entry is the little Masonic Cantata, dated November 15, 1791. The Requiem, as we know, didn’t make it into the list. For decades the history of the Requiem was full of ambiguity, while that of the Clarinet Concerto seemed quite clear. But in recent years, as we learned more about the unfinished Requiem, questions about the concerto began to emerge.

Sounding Nostalgia In Post-World War I Paris Abstract In the years that immediately followed the Armistice of November 11, 1918, Paris was at a turning point in its history: the aftermath of the Great War overlapped with the early stages of what is commonly perceived as a decade of rejuvenation. This transitional period was marked by tension between the preservation (and reconstruction) of a certain prewar heritage and the negation of that heritage through a series of social and cultural innovations. In this dissertation, I examine the intricate role that nostalgia played across various conflicting experiences of sound and music in the cultural institutions and popular media of the city of Paris during that transition to peace, around 1919-1920. I show how artists understood nostalgia as an affective concept and how they employed it as a creative resource that served multiple personal, social, cultural, and national functions. Rather than using the term “nostalgia” as a mere diagnosis of temporal longing, I revert to the capricious definitions of the early twentieth century in order to propose a notion of nostalgia as a set of interconnected forms of longing.

    Dramatizing the Harpsichord: The Harpsichord Music of Elliott Carter by Chau-Yee Lo “I regard my scores as scenarios, auditory scenarios, for performers to act out their instruments, dramatizing the players as individuals and partici- pants in the ensemble.”1 Elliott Carter has often stated that this is his creative standpoint, his works from solo to orchestral pieces growing from the dramatic possibilities inherent in the sounds of the instruments. In this article I will investigate how and to what extent this applies to Carter’s harp- sichord music. Carter has written two works for the harpsichord: Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Cello, and Harpsichord was completed in 1952, and Double Concerto for Harpsichord and Piano with Two Chamber Orchestras in 1961. Both commissions were initiated by harpsichordists: the first by Sylvia Marlowe (1908–81) and the Harpsichord Quartet of New York, for whom the Sonata was written, the latter by Ralph Kirkpatrick (1911–84), who had been Carter’s fellow student at Harvard. Both works encapsulate a significant development in Carter’s technique of composition, and bear evidence of his changing approach to music in the 1950s. Shortly after completing the Double Concerto Carter started writing down the interval combinations he had frequently been using. This exercise continued and became more systematic over the next two decades, and the result is now published as the Harmony Book.2 Carter came to write for the harpsichord for the first time in the Sonata. Here the harpsichord is the only soloist, the other instruments being used as a frame. In particular Carter emphasizes the wide range of tone colours available on the modern harpsichord, echoing these in the different musi- cal characters of the other instruments.
