There has been a co-operation with at least three universities of different European countries, among them universities from Belgium, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and Swe- den. The focused subjects vary according to the interests of the participating part- ners. This report is presenting the results of the IP workshop on the subject “Politi- cal opinion making on blog and twitter – an European comparison of actors, stan- dards and internet literacy” which took place in Berlin from March 14 th to 26 th , 2010. These workshops are designed according to the principle “experts meet experts”. They comprise 10 workdays and feature a very intensive participation of students. The students acquire the essential aspects of the topic of the seminary within a preparation course at their home university and prepare a presentation (look part C – reports of different countries). The technical input is completed by the experts’ presentations. On this basis the different viewpoints of the representatives of the participating universities meet and during the workshop the nationally mixed work- groups discuss solutions to the problems and create a report comprising the re- sults thereof (look part D – reports from the workgroups). The concept of the intensive program offers very good conditions for an intensive exchange between lecturers and students of different countries. Besides the tech- nical discussions, especially insights into the specific academic practices (e. g. the way students and lecturers are dealing with each other) and standards (compe- tences of presentation and communication as well as breadth and depth of the students’ technical knowledge) are helpful to receive impulses for the own univer- sity and the personal design of one’s role as lecturer. In the current year the workshop took place at the Faculty of Public Administration of HWR Berlin. The Freedom Party also picked up a substantial number of legislative seats in Vienna’s state elections in October. The balance between freedom of speech and Austrian hate-speech laws drew increased attention during the year as objectionable statements, mainly against Islam, came under scrutiny. Modern Austria, which emerged from the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I, was annexed to Nazi Germany in 1938 before being restored to independence after World War II. The country remained neutral during the Cold War and joined the European Union in 1995. From 1986 until 2000, the two largest political parties—the center-left Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and the center-right People’s Party of Austria (ÖVP)—governed together in a grand coalition. The 1999 elections produced the first government since 1970 that did not include the SPÖ. Instead, the ÖVP formed a coalition with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), a far-right nationalist party that won 27 percent of the popular vote. Its support had risen steadily as voters became disaffected with the large parties’ power-sharing arrangement and its barriers to major political change.

Religion in the modern world Part I – Press and television Introduction Modern and postmodern trends infuse contemporary times with new values such as spontaneity, ephemerality and leisure. All narrative styles are rejected for the sake of neo-narration or post-narration affirmating the market, the freedom of choice, the ideology of hedonism and entertainment. Not only do they transpire to all spheres of life, experiences and desires, but also form our semantic structures, impact axiological and epistemological models that are a part of the contemporary social order. Postmodern attributes determine the character of societies1, culture and its components, while the past and the present lead a battle for the citizens’, recipients’ and consumers’ attention. However, they seem to be overwhelmed by the magic of 'nowness'2, dynamically changing trends and fashions celebrating pleasure, individualism, quasi-uniqueness and vanity, rather than ideals, values or traditional standards. It seems that contemporary times are as a result contesting and depreciating historical socio-cultural contexts and formulae. These form a reservoir of symbols and meanings, a collection of available means of expression facilitating the dissemination of happiness and consumerism, with ephem- erality and simulation supplanting conventional reflectivity and the former structures of sense.     THE RELIGIOUS MARKET IN POLAND – CHOSEN ASPECTS. PRELIMINARY REMARKS Ewa Stachowska* The relationship between religion and the market or more broadly, the economy and economic processes, is the sphere of analyses within social sciences, which has a well-established tradition, set in two interpretative trends, emphasising the dia- lectical nature of this relation (Stachowska, 2004: 104). The first one is connected with M. Weber’s concept, who indicated the role of religion in economic devel- opment, whereas this influence was especially visible in the ascetic Protestantism. The doctrinal assumptions of Protestantism, by affirming certain norms of work and life, such as frugality, methodicalness, and consumer restraint, being above all a form of undertaken efforts aimed at achieving salvation, contributed not only to shaping a specific form of work ethic, but also to capital accumulation, resulting in initiating specific economic processes. In other words, religion creates – accord- ing to this perspective – grounds for the emergence of given attitudes and pro-eco- nomic behaviours, which involve changes on a macrosocial scale. Weber’s vantage point reveals that religion can determine economic behaviours, leading to the emer- gence of certain norms, favouring the development of capitalism (Weber, 1994). However, the second dimension of the analyses is set in reverse dependence, emphasising the influence of market mechanisms on the religious sphere, namely the adaptation of economic rules and using mercenary criteria by religious organ- izations in their activity. We can view the sources of such a perspective in A. The study series All over the world, right-wing populist parties continue to grow stronger, as has been the case for a number of years – a development that is male-dominated in most countries, with right-wing populists principally elected by men. However, a new generation of women is also active in right-wing populist parties and movements – forming the female face of right-wing populism, so to speak. At the same time, these parties are rapidly closing the gap when it comes to support from female voters – a new phenomenon, for it was long believed that women tend to be rather immune to right-wing political propositions. Which gender and family policies underpin this and which societal trends play a part? Is it possible that women are coming out triumphant here? That is a question that we already raised, admittedly playing devil’s advocate, in the first volume of the publication, published in 2018 by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Triumph of the women? The Female Face of the Far Right in Europe. We are now continuing this first volume with a series of detailed studies published at irregular intervals. This is partly in response to the enormous interest that this collection of research has aroused to date in the general public and in professional circles. As a foundation with roots in social democracy, from the outset one of our crucial concerns has been to monitor anti-democratic tendencies and developments, while also providing information about these, with a view to strengthening an open and democratic society thanks to these insights.
