KAB enjoys the unique status of being the first university of its kind in Uganda, to metamorphose from private to public. It was established by the Parliament of Uganda through Statutory Instrument 2015 No. 36 of 16th July 2015, in accordance with The Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act (2001) (as amended). Prior to this, Kabale University was a not-for-profit Private University, created and owned by the people of the Kigezi Region of South-Western Uganda. The University admitted its 42 pioneer students in 2002, and presently has an enrolment of 3000 students; coming from all parts of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC Congo, and Sudan. Kabale University was granted Charter Certificate No. UI.CH.008 on 29th September 2014. The main Campus is located on Kikungiri Hill in Kabale Municipality, about 2km off Kabale–Katuna-Kigali (Rwanda) Highway. The University is strategically located between the Anglophone and Francophone zones of the Great Lakes Region of Eastern Africa. KAB offers a serene environment for academic pursuit. Washington, D.C. 20006 September 2002 Strategic Criteria for Rural Investments in Productivity (SCRIP) is a USAID-funded program in Uganda implemented by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in collaboration with Makerere University Faculty of Agriculture and Institute for Environment and Natural Resources. The key objective is to provide spatially-explicit strategic assessments of sustainable rural livelihood and land use options for Uganda, taking account of geographical and household factors such as asset endowments, human capacity, institutions, infrastructure, technology, markets & trade, and natural resources (ecosystem goods and services). It is the hope that this information will help improve the quality of policies and investment programs for the sustainable development of rural areas in Uganda. SCRIP builds in part on the IFPRI project Policies for Improved Land Management in Uganda (1999-2002). SCRIP started in March 2001 and is scheduled to run until 2006. The origin of SCRIP lies in a challenge that the USAID Uganda Mission set itself in designing a new strategic objective (SO) targeted at increasing rural incomes. The Expanded Sustainable Economic Opportunities for Rural Sector Growth strategic objective will be implemented over the period 2002-2007. This new SO is a combination of previously separate strategies and country programs on enhancing agricultural productivity, market and trade development, and improved environmental management. She then switched to the academic arena, serving as the Head of the Department of Women and Gender Studies, and later became the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Makerere University.
