Papers should be submitted to the respective Coordinating Committee members by 31 December 1994. The Report will be published by June/July 1995. Ng, Chairman Comments from CGC Gene List Committee Lists of known genes for the Cucurbitaceae have been published previously in Hortscience and in reports of the Cucurbit Genetics Cooperative. CGC is currently publishing complete lists of known genes for cucumber (Cucumis sativus), melon (Cucumis melo), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), and Cucurbita spp. on a rotating basis. It is hoped that scientists will consult these lists as well as the rules of gene nomenclature for the Cucurbitaceae before selecting a gene name and symbol. Thus, inadvertent duplication of gene names and symbols will be prevented. The rules of gene nomenclature were adopted in order to provide guidelines for the naming and symbolizing of genes previously reported and those which will be reported in the future. Scientists are urged to contact members of the Gene List Committee regarding questions in interpreting the nomenclature rules and in naming and symbolizing new genes. Cucumber: Todd C. Aguiyi Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Jos, Nigeria. Accepted 24 October, 2007 The effects of the powdered fruits of Cucumis metuliferus on enzymes and haematological indices were evaluated in adult albino rats. The study revealed a significant (P<0.05) dose-dependent decrease in white blood cells (WBC) count. 500 mg/kg body weight of the powdered fruit produced a significant (P<0.05) decrease in red blood cells (RBC), and an increase in platelet and haemoglobin (Hb), while there was an insignificant (P>0.05) decrease in clotting and bleeding time. 1000 mg/kg produced significant (P<0.05) increase in RBC, platelets, Hb and packed cell volume (PCV) values, and an insignificant (P>0.05) decrease in clotting and bleeding time. The biochemical parameters evaluation showed that 500 - 1000 mg/kg of the powdered fruit of the plant produced a dose-dependent significant (P<0.05) increase in the levels of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and Total protein. This result showed that Cucumis metuliferus produced alterations in the haematological and biochemical indices evaluated. Keywords: Cucumis metuliferus, serum, enzymes, haematological.

The medicinal value of these plants lies in its constituents which include alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, volatile oils, steroids and minerals. An alcoholic extract of Citrulls colocynthis fruit seeds in a dose of 25 and 5o mg/Kg.B.wt intraperitonealy have been given daily to the rats exposed to high fat diet for 25 weeks (30% fat instead of 5% fat in normal diet). Sampling has been done every 5 weeks with verifying of blood glucose level, plasma insulin level, liver lipid extraction and plasma leptin level. The results revealed a protective ability of the fruits seeds extract in preventing, to a large extent, the onset of the fatty liver syndrome as well as diabetes mellitus type 2 associated with it.     COUNTRY FACT SHEET ON FOOD AND AGRICULTURE POLICY TRENDS | September 2014 Socio-economic context and role of agriculture In the Near East and North Africa region, Iran has the second largest economy (after Saudi Arabia) and population (after Egypt). Iran ranks second in the world in natural gas reserves and third in oil reserves.1 The agriculture and rural sector share in the GDP has declined in the last twenty years and yet is the source of income for more than 15 million people in rural areas.2 One quarter of the rural population is landless and of those who own land, one third are smallholders. Those within this segment of the population often fall below or just within the poverty line and face high underemployment rates. IRAN Some of the main development challenges at the national level are the harsh conditions of the physical environment and low productivity of small-holder farmers. Food security challenges include lack of self-sufficiency in major staple crops and inadequate access to food in terms of quantity of daily energy intake. The Iranian Government has adopted a comprehensive strategy envisioning market-based reforms as reflected in the 20-year Vision document and Iran’s fifth Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP 2011–15). The Government envisioned a large privatization programme in its 2010-2015 five-year plan, aiming to privatize 20 percent of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) each year. Moreover, Iran’s 2012 Doing Business ranking is in the bottom tiers of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, at 144th overall. Only Algeria, Iraq, and Djibouti rank lower among MENA countries.

La longevidad media de T. vaporariorum en el cv. Chocho fue mayor a 19°C (22.6 d), intermedia a 22°C (17.5 d) y menor a 26°C (5.9 d). En el cv. ICA-Pijao la longevidad media fue de 35.5 d a 19°C. La fecundidad media total fue 8.6, 32.6 y 33.3 huevos por hembra a 19, 22 y 26°C, respectivamente en el cv. Chocho. India ABSTRACT: In this investigation the antibacterial activity of aqueous extracts of commonly used spices and vegetables were assayed against Bacillus methylotrophicus strain Kharuss 0103 isolated from poultry farm. Garlic (Allium sativum) extract showed maximum inhibitory effect on Bacillus methylotrophicus strain Kharuss 0103. Aqueous extracts of Zingiber officinale, Allium cepa, Beta vulgaris and Momordica charantia did not inhibit the growth of tested bacteria. Allium sativum were showing zone of inhibition of 30 mm and 24 mm using Agar well diffusion method and Agar disc diffusion method respectively against this strain. These results suggest that Allium sativum is a potential spice for inhibiting the growth of this bacterial strain isolated from poultry farm. Mey. Ex Naudin (African horned cucumber) under protected and open environment with the aim of comparing yield and quality for the purpose of commercialisation of the crop. Therefore, the overall objective was to determine a suitable growing environment for C. metuliferus between greenhouse, shade net and open field, so that a comparative yield and quality analysis could be done for the purpose of commercialisation of the crop. Cucumis metuliferus seeds are difficult to germinate under the normal suitable environmental conditions in which most farmers operate. Germination was evaluated with respect to growth medium, scarification and seed certification. These factors ultimately control yield and fruit quality. The main aim of the study was to investigate the effect or impact of seed certification, growth medium (sand and vermiculite, peat TS1 and seedling mix) and scarification on germination success of C. metuliferus seeds. The seeds were classified under four different categories viz. treated certified, non-treated certified, treated uncertified, and non-treated uncertified. Of the 540 certified and uncertified seeds sown in the three-growth media, 80% germinated, significantly more that those that failed.
