The Kinks will release a 50 th Anniversary Edition of one of the greatest British rock albums of all time ‘The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society’ on BMG October 26 th . This essential album by one of the world’s best ever bands is defined by the extraordinary catalogue of Ray Davies’ songs, driven by brother Dave Davies’ power pop guitar and became the foundation of generations of British guitar pop. ‘The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society’ cemented Ray Davies reputation as one of Britain's greatest ever songwriters of his and any generation. These releases are part of the BMG Art Of The Album series, comprising specially packaged re-issues of seminal albums with the highest quality audio masters, artwork and packaging. Extensive sleeve notes, interviews and photography help to focus on ‘telling the story’ of the album’s production, release and cultural impact. “I think The Village Green Preservation Society is about the ending of a time personally for me in my life,” says Ray. “In my imaginary village. It's the end of our innocence, our youth. Some people are quite old but in the Village Green, you're never allowed to grow up. I feel the project itself as part of a life cycle.” Somewhat overlooked upon its release in November 1968, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society is now seen as one of the best British albums ever recorded. Created in difficult circumstances by a band who refused to follow fashion, it is an album of timeless, perfectly crafted songs about growing up and growing old, and the decline of national culture and traditional ways. Enduring and unsurpassed with its wit, sadness, quiet anger, regret and charm, it is generally considered the high point of The Kinks’ outstanding career and Ray Davies’ masterpiece. A calm, nostalgic album which feels like a sweet, hazy dream but with endless layers of musical and lyrical innovation, The Village Green Preservation Society’s defiantly British sensibilities became the foundation for generations of British guitar pop. Included in this anniversary edition are many previously unreleased tracks and versions, including the previously unreleased track ‘ Time Song ’. Despite never been included on a release, ‘ Time Song ’ was performed by The Kinks at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in January 1973, celebrating Britain's entry into the Common Market. ‘When we played a concert at Drury Lane in ’73 to “celebrate” us about to join what was called The Common Market, I decided to use the song as a warning that time was running out for the old British Empire.’ Says Ray. ‘This song was recorded a few weeks later but never made the final cut on the Preservation Act I album. Oddly enough, the song seems quite poignant and appropriate to release at this time in British history, and like Europe itself the track is a rough mix which still has to be finessed.’ Ray mixed the track earlier this year and it is included on the new VGPS Deluxe Box Set and Deluxe 2CD. The single version will also be available as a limited edition 7” single exclusively with pre-orders of the box set via The Kinks Music Glue official store, and as a digital download single. The deluxe box set includes extensive sleeve notes, interviews, photography and specially created online & press content “telling the story” of the album's production, release and cultural impact. Also included are two essays on the album written by Pete Townshend and renowned journalist Kate Mossman . Arthur. To mark its 50 th anniversary, The Kinks have announced a special release of ‘Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire’ – out now on BMG, which includes previously unreleased track ‘The Future’ Without doubt, the Kinks 7 th studio album is one of the greatest rock albums ever made, a near perfect example of Ray Davies’ incredible storytelling ability in what was an innovation in 1969: a concept album. It’s also poignant that a record based on the story of emigrating from the UK around its potential to enter the Common Market should hit its 50 th anniversary right now. With Brexit on the horizon, the themes of ‘Arthur’ ring alarmingly familiar. ‘Arthur’ received unanimous acclaim on its release. Each of its 12 original album tracks is an absolute gem and all perfect examples of Ray Davies’ intrinsic ability to weave a story around a song. In what was a golden period for the Kinks, ‘Arthur’ followed another classic, ‘The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society’ when it was released on October 10 th 1969. Rolling Stone Wrote ‘Arthur is a masterpiece on every level, Ray Davies’ finest hour. The Kinks’ supreme achievement and the best British album of 1969’. Melody Maker was equally enthusiastic: ‘Ray Davies’ finest hour. beautifully British to the core’. “I started Arthur before the end of Village Green.” says Ray. “The albums piggyback one another because they are joined. I’d already written the song ‘Arthur’. I think I wrote ‘Australia’ when I was still living at 87 Fortis Green so it was quite early on. I remember taking it over to Dave, he lived in Cockfosters at the time, and playing it to him. We were laughing at the irony in the line, ‘nobody’s got a chip on their shoulder’.” In the midst of the ‘Arthur’ sessions, studio time was devoted to completing tracks for Dave Davies’ proposed solo album. The idea had progressed in staggered intervals since the initial success of Dave’s 1967 single, ‘Death Of A Clown’ but, ultimately, never reached completion. “One of the reasons the album wasn’t finished was because I felt The Kinks’ management and record company were forcing me too much,” Dave reflects. I felt very comfortable being in The Kinks and it seemed fulfilling to be part of a band. I didn’t really want for more. I couldn’t see the point.” Ray says; “Hearing Dave’s songs again after all this time, I found them quite moving because they were like the back story of what The Kinks were going through at the time. Reprise eventually scrapped the release by September 1969 and over the years, Kinks fans continued to obsess as to what Dave’s album - which some referred to as ‘A Hole In The Sock Of’, a working title Ray had jokingly thrown to a music journalist - might have contained. Included in this anniversary edition are 4 CDs comprising of 81 tracks in total, 5 of them unreleased and 28 previously unreleased versions. These include 2019 newly remastered versions of the original album from HD sources (in its original track listing), mono and stereo single versions, B- sides, alternate mono and stereo mixes, rehearsal tracks, BBC mixes and the lost Dave Davies’ solo album, with bonus tracks. It also includes Ray Davies’ compiled medley of unreleased demo tracks, 2 new recordings of Ray Davies with The Doo Wop Choir, ‘Arthur & The Emigrants’ including one previously unreleased track, 3 previously unreleased ‘The Come Dancing Workshop Ensemble’ tracks, and new Ray Davies remixes of ‘Australia’ and ‘Shangri-La’. A 68-page softback book has also been included, featuring extensive essays by world-renowned Kinks experts, original cancelled Arthur play co- scriptwriter Julian Mitchell, and original album sleeve designer Bob Lawrie. There are also new interviews with Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Mick Avory, as well as band photos, original release international cover artwork and printed memorabilia. Four 7” singles from the album can also be found - ‘Drivin’, ‘Victoria’, ‘Shangri-La’ & ‘Hold My Hand’ (Dave Davies solo) - all reproduced with original international artwork. Finally, a bespoke, exclusive, metal & enamel Kinks logo pin badge is included for fans to wear. Elvis est devenu has been.

  • Lola Versus Powerman & the Money-Go-Round, Part One (1970)
LOLA VERSUS POWERMAN & THE MONEY-GO-ROUND, PART ONE (1970) The Kinks spent most of 1969 suffering as many setbacks as there were successes: Arthur’s surprise success was met immediately with a disastrous tour of the United States, marred by Dave’s depression and drug use. The following year saw a complete reversal of fortune for the band, due at least in part to constantly touring, which in turn resulted in Ray’s development into a true showman. However, the main source of the band’s success was a single that contains one of Ray’s finest tunes and lyrics: “Lola.” The album that followed, Lola Versus Powerman & The Money-Go-Round, Part One, only helped to bolster the group’s renewed success and relevance in the United States. The band’s North American tour was abruptly cut short after only nine dates as Mick Avory had been stricken with hepatitis. In spite of the brevity of this tour, one particular event took place that would become a staple of The Kinks’ live show. During a concert in Montreal on February 5th,1 Ray was so angered by the audience’s lack of enthusiasm that he sprayed them with beer. Much like Pete Townshend smashing his guitar, what had occurred purely by accident evolved into something that was expected, if not demanded, by future audiences. Ray is depicted in a photo some ten years after its origins on the cover of Thomas Kitts’ book, Not Like Everybody Else. This incident marked the beginnings of Ray’s shift from being a mere lead singer into a flamboyant showman who would both feed and play off of his audience.

JEFF HUNTER: The Hunters’ two boys, Steele and Chris, both from former marriages, get along as well as their mom and dad. Jeff’s superb performance in In Love and War is proof that his recovery is complete and his talent is more abundant than ever. Jeff Hunter couldn't . he wouldn't let her know how ill he was. He barely made it home, waved his wife Dusty a jaunty ''Hi!"—and then collapsed on the kitchen floor. by FREDDA DUDLEY BALLING JEFF HUNTER STUDIED THE white curtains at the apartment's bedroom window as they lifted idly in the late afternoon's wandering breeze. De- tachedly, he studied himself as he lay- amazingly long and shallow-under the white bedspread. That small peak so far away was, of course, his feet. He looked at his hands as they lay quietly at his sides, bleached of their normal tan. He had been tormented by a thou- sand demons hammering at his skull. But now he was still. His body had been twisted on a rack, but now it was without pain. He had endured the heat of a raging fire and the chill of an Arc- tic night. Now it was as if he were one with the air, floating in a medium as friendly as a tropic dawn. And he thought, "I understand it. I am going to die." At first the notion was without emotional content, as one will think, upon awakening, "Let me see this is Thursday." Then one thinks, "Mmm, Thursday. I must make that telephone call, order those flowers .

  • 40Th Anniversary of the Village Green Preservation
Mark Wegman November 2008 As many of you know, Saturday is the 40th anniversary of the U.K. release of The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society. "One of the most successful failures of all time" is how Ray Davies has described his masterpiece. The spring of 1968 found The Kinks in a state of limbo. The relative failure of their “Wonderboy” single in April 1968 seemed to testify to their fall from popular grace even in the singles genre, which had traditionally been their strong suit. Even though the group had produced increasingly intricate and innovative albums, the albums had been likewise increasingly ignored (i.e., Something Else). The panacea of the hippie flower child "peace and love" culture began, even at this early date, to lose some of its luster - fueled in America by the sight on the evening news of America's youth being slaughtered wholesale in far-off Vietnam for a purpose that was increasingly unclear, other than "America has never lost a war!" America had become more polarized both politically as well as culturally. The assassination of Robert Kennedy and violent riots at the Democratic National Convention that summer in Chicago had jolted many in the "free love" generation to become more politically active. The emergence of the "underground" and the "movement" in both print, music and on the radio waves only helped to fuel the activist viewpoint. In the States, you were either "cool" or you were a "pig," you either were part of the solution or you were part of the problem.

CORRECTIONS TO EXISTING ENTRIES PLUS ADDITIONS THROUGH 1993. Included here are all corrections to existing entries and text for material issued through 1993 as published in the 1994-97 Supplement as well as corrections which have been realized since that time. Not included are additions from the supplement for material issued 1994 onwards. Many but not all of these corrections have been made when possible to the existing text and entries in the new limited reprint edition. As these corrections are made only in the interest of eliminating outright errors in the original edition and not as any kind of incentive to purchase the reprint even if one owns the first printing, we are presenting this on-line version of the corrections for the benefit of customers of the original edition. It is still the hope to wholly revise and update You Really Got Me into a new and completely up-to-date format but the focus of all efforts now are on completing work on at least an initial volume of the long-promised All Day And All Of The Night, or "Part 2" of this series which will examine the Kinks' career and activities on a chronological day by day basis. This page can also act as a forum for further corrections to the original text if readers have new or improved information to add. All comments and/or corrections/additions should be directed to [email protected] or sent to: Rock 'n' Roll Research Press, PO Box 4759, Rumford, RI 02916.
