Ik kan daarom ook nu wel wat verschillen merken, wat opmerkelijke verschillen. I: Oh, daar ben ik erg benieuwd naar. R: Ja, dat dacht ik al I: Wat moet ik me bij die verschillen voorstellen? R: Nou, je merkt toch vooral dat de statuur en de uitstraling van NRC Handelsblad, dat wist ik wel, maar nu merk ik het in de praktijk meer dan ooit, die is gewoon groot. Dat betekent ook dat spindoctors en voorlichters en al die wijsneuzen, communicatiewerknemers als ik ze even zo mag noemen. Dat klinkt een beetje oneerbiedig maar je begrijpt wat ik bedoel. Zij spelen daar ook op in. Ik merkt dat ik bij het RD toch net iets harder moet lopen dan destijds bij NRC om te zorgen dat wij [de informatie] ook als eerste hebben. Zij [spindoctors en voorlichters] denken dan “ja, het is maar het Rotterdams Dagblad”, het bereik is wat minder groot. Maar tegelijkertijd, als je iets bij het Rotterdams Dagblad ‘pitcht’, om het afschuwelijke woord maar eens te gebruiken, dan zit je wel in het hart van je doelgroep. Maar goed, wat van groot belang is, vind ik, is dat je als journalist niet afhankelijk bent van die voorlichters. Maar je kunt ook niet zonder ze. Zo eerlijk moet ik ook zijn.

Het tekort aan bètatechnisch opgeleide werknemers wordt door ondernemers gezien als de grootste bedreiging voor toekomstige groei. Alle reden om hier dan ook hard aan te trekken. Dat is het afgelopen halfjaar ook gebeurd. Zo hebben de topteams, naast innovatiecontracten per sector, ook Human Capital Agenda’s opgesteld en is 13 februari het Masterplan Bèta en Technologie gepresenteerd: een aanvalsplan van het bedrijfsleven om het tij te keren en meer jonge mensen te laten kiezen voor techniek. Tijdens Industriepoort op 28 maart zal staatssecretaris Halbe Zijlstra zijn visie geven op het onderwijs en de samenwerking met het bedrijfsleven. Wat betekent het onderwijsbeleid van dit kabinet voor de industrie? Welke gevolgen heeft dit voor ondernemers? Wat zijn de effecten voor de kenniseconomie? En hoe zal hij met name omgaan met de bètatechniekopgave? We hebben een goede groep van zeventien 50-plusmannen en -vrouwen met praktische en bestuurlijke ervaring op het gebied van ouderenbeleid.

Als je naar de peilingen kijkt, dan worden we daar niet vrolijk van. Nu zegt het politieke handboek dat ik nu tegen u moet zeggen: “Ach peilingen, het zijn maar dagkoersen, trekt u zich er niets van aan!!” Maar ik hoop dat u inmiddels weet dat dat mijn stijl niet is. Maurice de Hond doet natuurlijk gewoon zijn werk. Maar waar ik de pest in heb, is het beeld dat achter die peilingen schuil gaat. - Ik baal van de beschuldigingen van kiezersbedrog en vermeend gedraai. - Ik baal van het beeld dat de PvdA onzichtbaar is. - Ik baal van het verhaal dat er een richtingenstrijd zou zijn. - Ik baal ervan dat noodzakelijke maatregelen soms onhandig in het nieuws komen. - En ik baal het meest van het beeld dat dit kabinet geen resultaten boekt. Partijgenoten, En het is erger dan dat. De Politiek in zijn geheel maakt een opgejaagde indruk. Politici lopen steeds meer achter de waan van de dag aan. En waarom gebeurt dit? - Omdat politici denken daarmee het vertrouwen van kiezers te herwinnen. - Omdat we in Den Haag denken dat kiezers op hol zijn geslagen. - En omdat we denken dat we achter hen aan moeten lopen met makkelijke verhalen. Partijgenoten, dat is een Haagse wedstrijd die we niet kunnen winnen. En het is wat mij betreft ook een wedstrijd met de verkeerde spelregels. - Bij die wedstrijd regeert namelijk de angst. - Bij die wedstrijd is regeringsdeelname een hinderlijke blessure.
