Joint Cabinet Crisis Kingdom of Mercia Hamburg Model United Nations “Shaping a New Era of Diplomacy” 28th November – 1st December 2019 JCC – Kingdom of Mercia Hamburg Model United Nations Study Guide 28th November – 1st December Welcome Letter by the Secretary Generals Dear Delegates, we, the secretariat of HamMUN 2019, would like to give a warm welcome to all of you that have come from near and far to participate in the 21st Edition of Hamburg Model United Nations. We hope to give you an enriching and enlightening experience that you can look back on with joy. Over the course of 4 days in total, you are going to try to find solutions for some of the most challenging problems our world faces today. Together with students from all over the world, you will hear opinions that might strongly differ from your own, or present your own divergent opinion. We hope that you take this opportunity to widen your horizon, to, in a respectful manner, challenge and be challenged and form new friendships. With this year’s slogan “Shaping a New Era of Democracy” we would like to invite you to engage in and develop peaceful ways to solve and prevent conflicts. To remain respectful and considerate in diplomatic negotiations in a time where we experience our political climate as rough, and to focus on what unites us rather than divides us. As we are moving towards an even more globalized and highly military armed world, facing unprecedented threats such as climate change and Nuclear Warfare, international cooperation has become more important than ever to ensure peace and stability. -

SIAH 2013 010 Bu A SIAH 2012 00 Bu A 31 1 1 10 20 12 127 EXCURSIONS 2012 Report and notes on some findings 21 April. Clive Paine and Edward Martin Eye church and castle Eye, Church of St Peter and St Paul (Clive Paine) (by kind permission of Fr Andrew Mitchell). A church dedicated to St Peter was recorded at Eye in 1066. The church was endowed with 240 acres of glebe land, a sure indication that this was a pre-Conquest minster church, with several clergy serving a wide area around Eye. The elliptical shaped churchyard also suggests an Anglo-Saxon origin. Robert Malet, lord of the extensive Honour of Eye, whose father William had built a castle here by 1071, founded a Benedictine priory c. 1087, also dedicated to St Peter, as part of the minster church. It seems that c. 1100–5 the priory was re-established further to the east, at the present misnamed Abbey Farm. It is probable that at the same time the parish church became St Peter and St Paul to distinguish itself from the priory. The oldest surviving piece of the structure is the splendid early thirteenth-century south doorway with round columns, capitals with stiff-leaf foliage, and dog-tooth carving around the arch. The doorway was reused in the later rebuilding of the church, a solitary surviving indication of the high-status embellishment of the early building. The mid fourteenth-century rebuilding was undertaken by the Ufford family of Parham, earls of Suffolk, who were lords of the Honour of Eye 1337–82. -

Statement of Consultation. 14.1 Consultation meetings held on 13th November 2016. Informal open meetings were held at Somerleyton and Lound village halls. These meetings were advertised by delivering a flyer to every house in the two parishes, and by putting posters on the village notice boards and websites. A letter was also sent to all local businesses and other local organisations. The events were well attended, with 50 people visiting Somerleyton village hall, and 28 people visiting Lound village hall Consultation meeting at Somerleyton Post-it notes for residents’ comments Residents were able to view maps and to comment on various local issues using ”post-it” notes, which proved a very successful way of collecting their views. At the end of the meetings 330 comments had been received, and these were analysed. A summary of the comments which was displayed on the village notice boards and websites, and is shown below: NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN 29 Lound with Ashby, Herringflet, and Somerleyton Neighbourhood Plan CONSULTATION DAY 13TH NOVEMBER 2016 THE KEY ISSUES RAISED BY THE COMMUNITY WERE: Housing. Avoid building new houses on some specified sites, although some acceptable sites were identified. The Blundeston prison site and brownfield sites in Lowestoft are more suitable. New development should be limited to small houses. -

Pick of the Churches The East of England is famous for its superb collection of churches. They are one of the nation's great treasures. Introduction There are hundreds of churches in the region. Every village has one, some villages have two, and sometimes a lonely church in a field is the only indication that a village existed there at all. Many of these churches have foundations going right back to the dawn of Christianity, during the four centuries of Roman occupation from AD43. Each would claim to be the best - and indeed, all have one or many splendid and redeeming features, from ornate gilt encrusted screens to an ancient font. The history of England is accurately reflected in our churches - if only as a tantalising glimpse of the really creative years between the 1100's to the 1400's. From these years, come the four great features which are particularly associated with the region. - Round Towers - unique and distinctive, they evolved in the 11th C. due to the lack and supply of large local building stone. - Hammerbeam Roofs - wide, brave and ornate, and sometimes strewn with angels. Just lay on the floor and look up! - Flint Flushwork - beautiful patterns made by splitting flints to expose a hard, shiny surface, and then setting them in the wall. Often it is used to decorate towers, porches and parapets. - Seven Sacrament Fonts - ancient and splendid, with each panel illustrating in turn Baptism, Confirmation, Mass, Penance, Extreme Unction, Ordination and Matrimony. The Settlement of East and West Flegg in Norfolk from the 5Th to 11Th Centuries
TITLE OF THESIS The settlement of East and West Flegg in Norfolk from the 5th to 11th centuries By [Simon Wilson] Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted For the Degree of Masters of Philosophy Year 2018 ABSTRACT The thesis explores the –by and English place names on Flegg and considers four key themes. The first examines the potential ethnicity of the –bys and concludes the names carried a distinct Norse linguistic origin. Moreover, it is acknowledged that they emerged within an environment where a significant Scandinavian population was present. It is also proposed that the cluster of –by names, which incorporated personal name specifics, most likely emerged following a planned colonisation of the area, which resulted in the takeover of existing English settlements. The second theme explores the origins of the –by and English settlements and concludes that they derived from the operations of a Middle Saxon productive site of Caister. The complex tenurial patterns found between the various settlements suggest that the area was a self sufficient economic entity. Moreover, it is argued that royal and ecclesiastical centres most likely played a limited role in the establishment of these settlements. The third element of the thesis considers the archaeological evidence at the –by and English settlements and concludes that a degree of cultural assimilation occurred. However, the presence of specific Scandinavian metal work finds suggests that a distinct Scandinavian culture may have survived on Flegg. The final theme considers the economic information recorded within the folios of Little Domesday Book. It is argued that both the –by and English communities enjoyed equal economic status on the island and operated a diverse economy. -

The Connecting Bus Between 0930 and 1600 on Tuesdays, the Connecting Bus covers the following parishes: Blundeston, Corton, Flixton (Lowestoft), Lound, Lowestoft, Oulton, and Somerleyton /Ashby/Herringfleet. The Connecting Bus allows people to request any journey within the area above and anyone can use the service. Pick up is from a safe location near your home: a bus stop or the end of your road. Fares are similar to those on buses, under 20s have reduced fares and concessionary passes are valid after 0930. Door to door (formerly called Dial a Ride) Between 0930 and 1600 on Mondays to Fridays, the door to door service enables eligible registered members to request transport from their home to their final destination for journeys within these parishes Benacre, Blundeston, Carlton Colville, Corton, Covehithe, Flixton (Lowestoft), Frostenden, Gisleham, Kessingland, Lound, Lowestoft, Oulton, Reydon, Somerleyton/Ashby/Herringfleet, South Cove, Southwold, and Wrentham.
