The development of promising talented drivers enjoys a long tradition at BMW Motorsport. In 2014 a new multi-level GT junior concept had been introduced: the BMW Motorsport Junior Programme. This realignment saw BMW Motorsport shift its development of young drivers back to the GT and touring car sector. In Formula racing the concept bore fruit for many years in Formula BMW and the Formula BMW Talent Cup and kick-started the racing career of many successful drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg. The focus is on GT and touring car drivers who already have some racing experience. Outings in the BMW M235i Racing are an integral part of the comprehensive training programme. As well as race starts and test drives, intensive theory courses dealing with fitness and PR are planned, as are mental and simulator training. The potential candidates for this year’s class were put to the test in a shootout in the BMW M235i Racing in Dijon on 10th/11th March. A decision as to which of the young drivers showed the most potential is made by a jury of experts, headed by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. BMW works driver Dirk Adorf will act as a mentor for the junior programme. At the end of the year, the most successful BMW Motorsport Junior of the season will be given the opportunity to continue his training for a second year in a higher racing category.

It read as follows: “Johann Baptist Abt takes over blacksmiths and coachworks in Burgstraße, Kempten.” The blacksmith of yore has since developed in ABT Sportsline, the world’s largest automotive aftermarket and performance parts specialist for Audi and VW, one of the most successful international motorsport teams and an innovative electromobility pioneer. The family business is now celebrating its 125th birthday. “Much has changed since the early days – the world, its people, the car, our perspective on things”, says Hans-Jürgen Abt. “One thing, however, has remained constant: Our passion for exciting new technologies, adventure and occasional unconventional methods.” The managing partner is the fourth generation, who is in charge of running the company with now 200 employees that has always been based in the heart of the Allgäu region. “An anniversary like always provides the perfect opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you. After triumphs in world rallying and in touring car racing, Audi wrote a further chapter in to its already successful and illustrious motorsport history. In extremely hot weather conditions, Audi proved once more that the slogan, „Vorsprung durch TechniK“, the three Audi R8s for 24 hours were not only the fastest cars in 48-car field but also the most reliable. Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen, Chairman of the Board, Audi AG, remarked: „The foundations for victory were laid during the conception of this fascinating race car. Everyone who has contributed and worked on this project can really be proud, of course the team from Audi Sport, who have developed the R8, and Audi Sport Team Joest, who have done a perfect preparation of the race cars.“ The three Audi R8s dicated the pace from the outset. In all practice sessions and almost during the entire race, Audi held the top three positions. With 368-laps, the winning car completed three more laps than last year’s winner. „We could not have done any better, confirmed a delighted Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Audi’s Head of Sport. „We had no technical problems at all.“ Rear sections on two of the Audi R8s had to be changed but only for safety reasons.

    Electric Vehicles Set to Reap Formula E Dividend The second season of the all-electric racer championship opens the door for teams to develop their own drivetrains, boosting road-going electric vehicle technology. By Steven Keeping When Mouser-backed driver Nelson Piquet Jr. captured the first-ever FIA Formula E championship in June, 2015, the competition waved goodbye to the identical-car format and looked forward to a second season where drivetrain development was opened up. Formula E is an official Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) single-seater championship. Season two commenced in China in October and will continue through to June 2016. The championship will compete in the heart of ten of the world’s leading cities. Piquet Jr.’s China Racing team’s success was backed by Mouser Electronics, and along with partners Molex and Vishay Intertechnology sponsored the Spark-Renault SRT_01E EV, which was capable of 0-to-100 km/h (0-to-62 mph) in three seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h (150 mph). But it’s testament to Piquet Jr.’s driving talents that he won the inaugural championship in exactly the same vehicle as his fellow competitors. According to the the CEO of Formula E Holdings, Alejandro Agag, Formula E is a test bed for electric vehicle (EV) technologies such as batteries, motors, transmissions and charging. On the launch of Formula E, Agag promised that after season one the teams would be able to independently develop the car. True to Agag’s word, season two has seen the teams come up with their own drivetrain solutions.
