The face of philanthropy in North Carolina is changing. It reflects the shifting demo- graphics, geographies and needs across the state we serve. It’s seen in the growing diversity of the people who make up our Foundation and its expanding, inclusive network of donors, volunteers, leaders and recipients. It begins earlier in life, with young people – even children – embracing the power of giving. And it mirrors the generations of givers as they transition and transfer their gifts and values. What we’re experiencing at the North Carolina Community Foundation is not unique. Foundations across the state and country report an ever-expanding involvement in philan- thropy. We are merely a microcosm of our changing world. Now at our 20-year mark, the North Carolina Community Foundation is in a unique position to both recognize and capitalize on these emerging trends. Our report is organized to provide a glimpse at three important areas: State of Generosity: The NCCF’s network of affiliates has grown over the past 20 years to serve nearly all corners of North Carolina. Our statewide footprint and focus on rural and underserved areas are both our strength and a key differentiator. Read how the NCCF and our partner affiliate foundations serve North Carolina in unique ways, with untold contributions to our state’s quality of life and vital infrastructures. Reflecting our Networks: Philanthropy is no longer the exclusive preserve of a privileged few. Those who participate in the joys of giving now reflect the demographics of our society in general and North Carolina in particular. You’ll see how gifts great and small, from philanthropists who reflect both genders from every age and with growing diversity make an impact. The NCCF has programs to encourage giving among many groups that are emerging as important sources of charitable giving, including women and youth. The changing face of philanthropy is of course best reflected in the people we serve, partner with and employ: the donors, grant-recipients, leaders, volunteers and associates who have built the North Carolina Community Foundation over the last two decades. Generations of Givers: Much is written about the great transfer of wealth from one generation to another. We are also witnessing the transfer of values from one generation to the next. This section shows how family philanthropy is strong and growing within the NCCF. As we enter our third generation, the North Carolina Community Foundation remains poised to further cultivate philanthropy through our role as stewards of our state’s vast The Face of Philanthropy of Face The resources, partners in community development and leaders in leveraging capacity. 2008 Annual Report North Carolina Community Foundation

With 59 affiliates supporting 65 counties across North Carolina, the very expanse of our network makes us unique. The NCCF’s focus on rural communities also sets us apart. Our tradition of serving the state with a focus on under-served areas means that the Foundation and our affiliate partners make vital contributions to our state’s infrastructure and quality of life.
