The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Friday 24 September 2010 Niels Arden Oplev, Swe/Den/Ger, 2009, 18, 152min Based on Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel, the film stars Michael Nyqvist as an investiga- tive journalist who’s just lost a high profile libel case against a powerful businessman. With 6 months to kill before his prison sentence, the hero is hired by the wealthy Henrik Vanger to investigate the disappearance of his 16-year-old great-niece some four decades earlier. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a hugely enjoyable detective thriller of the sort that Hollywood just doesn’t seem to be able to make anymore.

Nowhere Boy, Friday 29 October 2010 Sam Taylor-Wood, UK, 2009, 15, 93min Nowhere Boy is a biopic about the early days of John Lennon. In 1955, John is living with his aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his uncle George (David Threlfall), who have raised him since he was 5 years old. When George dies, John reconnects with his flighty mother Julia which causes tension between the two women and also between Julia and her husband Bobby (David Morrissey). Meanwhile, John discovers rock’n’roll and decides to form a skiffle band with his friends. When he meets young Paul McCartney (Thomas Sangster), he senses he’s found a kindred spirit and the pair begin to write songs together.

Children’s film (to be announced) 10am Saturday 13 November 2010 Check www.humbieboxoffice.co.uk for further information. A Prophet, Saturday 13 November 2010 Jacques Audiard, France/Italy, 2009, 18, 155min A Prophet stars newcomer Tahar Rahim as Malik el Djebena, a young French-Arab convict who gets six years in a brutal French prison and decides to try and keep his head down. However, his intentions are quickly scuppered when he’s taken under the wing of Corsican gang leader Cesar Luciani and forced to murder a fellow inmate. A Prophet is a brilliantly directed, superbly written and terrifically acted prison drama that is by turns suspenseful, shocking and thoroughly gripping throughout. Won a BAFTA for best foreign language film

Cemetery Junction, Friday 26 November 2010 Stephen Merchant & Ricky Gervais, UK, 2010, 15, 94min Cemetery Junction is set in the Reading suburb of Cemetery Junction in 1973, where ambi- tious twentysomething Freddie has just landed a white-collar insurance job, much to the annoyance of his childhood best friends, ladies’ man Bruce and tubby loveable loser Snork. The dialogue crackles with witty lines and there are some nice off-beat character touches, especially with cafe owner Brian who seems to be off in a movie of his own. Scripted and directed by The Office creators Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais the film looks gorgeous and there’s a terrific 1970s soundtrack to boot.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Friday 17 December 2010 Woody Allen, US/Spain, 2008, 12A, 92min Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson star as Vicky and Cristina, two American friends who travel to Barcelona in order to spend the summer with Vicky’s relatives. Vicky is reserved and cautious with a fiancé back home, while Cristina is looking for passion and unpredictability, which is exactly what she finds when both women are chatted up by passionate painter Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem). His romantic allure is enhanced when they hear the delicious de- tails of his divorce from fellow artist, the tempestuous Maria Elena (Penélope Cruz). Hugely entertaining, subtly sexy and laugh-out-loud funny, the film is a long-awaited return to form for Woody Allen. Ms Cruz won best supporting actress Oscar and BAFTA awards. The History Boys, Friday 28 January 2011 Nicholas Hytner, UK/US, 2006, 15, 107min Impressively adapted from the multi-award-winning National Theatre production, The History Boys reunites the entire cast with the stage production’s writer (Alan Bennett) and director (Nicholas Hytner). Set in 1983, the story follows a group of eight fiercely intelligent students at a boys’ gram- mar school in Yorkshire, as they prepare for their Oxbridge entrance exams. Bennett’s script is lively, intelligent and extremely thought-provoking, especially on the nature of education and differ- ent teaching methods. An engaging and impressively acted drama. Children’s film (to be announced) 10am Saturday 12 February 2011 Check www.humbieboxoffice.co.uk for further information. , Friday 25 February 2011 , US, 2008, 15, 125min Director Kathryn Bigelow makes a welcome return to nerve-shredding thrillers with The Hurt Locker, based on a script by Mark Boal, a journal- ist who was attached to a bomb squad in postwar . Jeremy Renner stars as Will James, a fearless bomb disposal expert who seems to have learned the art from watching Lethal Weapon movies, much to the con- sternation of his counting-the-days colleagues Sandborne and Eldritch. Renner is utterly brilliant, ensuring that we really care about his character, even if he might actually have something of a dangerous death wish. There’s also strong support from supporting actors as well as a series of inspired cameos from Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse and Lost’s Evangeline Lilly. An outstanding film which won 6 Oscars. Up in the Air, Friday 25 March 2011 , US, 2009, 15, 104min Up in the Air is based on the comic novel by Walter Kirn and stars as Ryan Bingham, a management consultant who spends most of the year travelling, since his job is to fly all over the country and fire people whose companies are downsizing. Ryan has streamlined his life to the point where he has minimal contact with his family and no relationship ties, but he suddenly finds his lifestyle threatened when new recruit Natalie (Twilight’s Anna Kend- rick), introduces a video-conferencing system that will permanently ground him if it takes off. In short, Up in the Air is a superbly written, impressively directed and brilliantly acted comedy-drama that sidesteps the usual cliches and has a few emotional surprises up its sleeve. Won a BAFTA for best screenplay. An Education, Friday 29 April 2011 Lone Scherfig, UK, 2008, 12A, 100min An Education is based on the memoir by journalist Lynn Barber. Set in 1961 London it stars Carey Mulligan as 16-year-old Jenny, a gifted student on track for a place at Oxford, much to the delight of both her literature teacher and her aspirational parents. However, when she meets David (Peter Sarsgaard), a charismatic older man, she’s swept off her feet by his sophisticated friends and his seemingly glamorous, grown-up life, so it isn’t long before she’s wondering if Oxford is really the right thing for her after all. The film beautifully captures a 1960s London that hasn’t quite learned how to swing yet. Aided by Nick Hornby’s excellent script Scherfig gets the balance exactly right, lacing darker moments with an appealing layer of humour, whilst also exploring the central theme of education versus life experience. This is a hugely entertaining drama with a BAFTA-winning performance from rising star Carey Mulligan.
