All organizations—both for-profitS and nonprofit—require effective planning and a sound marketing strategy to, do this effectively. Without these efforts, organizations would not be able to satisfy customers or meet the needs of other stakeholders. For example, having an effective marketing strategy allows Apple to develop popular products, such as theD iPhone, iPad, iWatch, and its MacBook line of computers. Further, effective planning and strategy allows Cola- Cola to continue its leadership in soft drinks, make keyE acquisitions, and continue its expansion into the lucrative Chinese market. TheseA and other organizations use sound marketing strategy to leverage their strengths and capitalize on opportunities that exist in the market. Every organization—from yourN favorite local restaurant to giant multinational corporations; from city, state, andD federal governments, to chari- ties such as Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross—develops and imple- ments marketing strategies. R How organizations plan, develop, and implementA marketing strategies is the focus of this book. To achieve this focus, we provide a systematic process for devel- oping customer-oriented marketing strategies and marketing plans that match an organization to its internal and external environments.1 Our approach focuses on real-world applications and practical methods of marketing planning, including the process of developing a marketing plan. The chapters1 of this book focus on the steps of this process. Our goal is to give the reader a2 deeper understanding of mar- keting planning, the ability to organize the vast amount3 of information needed to complete the planning process, and an actual feel for the development of marketing plans. T In this first chapter, we review some of the majorS challenges and opportunities that exist in planning marketing strategy in today’s economy. We also review the nature and scope of major marketing activities and decisions that occur throughout the planning process. The col- lapse of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s was followed by a historic collapse of the worldwide economy in 2008. The powerhouse companies of the past have weak- ened and lost relevance in an economy marked by constant change and consumer skepticism. Consider the following fundamental changes to marketing and business practice, as well as our own personal buying behavior. Power Shift to Customers Perhaps the single most important change during the last two decades is the shift in power from marketers to consumers. Rather than businesses having the ability to manipulate customers via technology, customers often manipulate businesses because of their access to information, the ability to comparison shop, and the con- trol they have over spending. Individual consumers and business customers can compare prices and product specifications in a matter of minutes. Using a smart- phone and the Amazon app, customers can walk TargetG ’s aisles, scan bar codes to check prices on Amazon, and order items for 2-day deliveryA while in the store. This fact is the reason that Target, and other retailers like Best Buy, now price matches Amazon and other online competitors. In other cases,T customers are able to set their own prices, such as purchasing airline tickets atE Priceline.com. Customers can now interact with one another, as merchants such as Amazon and eBay allow custo- mers to share opinions on product quality and supplierS reliability. As power con- tinues to shift to customers, marketers have little choice, but to ensure that their products are unique and of high quality, thereby giving customers a reason to pur- chase their products and remain loyal to them.     STATE ATTORNEYS GENERAL AND THE RESPONSE TO THE 2007 RECALLS OF CHILDREN’S TOYS David Tutor February 5, 2009 INTRODUCTION In 2007, millions of toys were recalled because they contained small but powerful magnets that could perforate a child’s intestines when swallowed, as well as a dangerous amount of lead paint on exterior surfaces. These recalls of children’s products were both preceded and succeeded by additional recalls of everything from toy charms to pet food to car tires. The majority of these products were designed in the United States, manufactured overseas, and returned to the domestic market where they appeared largely untested on shelves in major retail outlets. In many cases, it took reports of deaths or serious injuries to spur major recalls. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the agency charged with protecting the American public from the risks of dangerous products, appeared to be abdicating its responsibility. Years of slashed funding and deregulatory ideology had rendered the agency essentially reactive-- its primary function shifted to monitoring for signs of injury or death that might prompt a recall and assisting companies publicize their press releases once a recall had been initiated. In the absence of strong federal regulation, state Attorneys General began to fill in the voids of the current system and were able to achieve some major successes in the consumer products realm. However, prior to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSA), state Attorneys General were often limited to confronting dangerous products to the extent that they were present in their state, despite their presence on shelves across the country.

The ultimate outcome of human exploration of the universe will no doubt shed light on the dismal nature of our interpersonal relationships and grand aspirations. Decorative Specter is an exhibition of sculpture and video that depicts a distant future inhabited by decorative artifacts of long extinct human civilizations. The works in this exhibition are speculative portraits of alien, but eerily familiar puppets. They represent moments within an implied overarching narrative, frozen for study and contemplation. My use of commonly overlooked aesthetics is intended to remind us that other intelligent life will likely spring from an unexpected place and with unexpected results. In Britain, little consumer research had been done before the 1980s and little design input went into good advertising. In fact pre-war advertising as evidenced by the catalogues of Lines Bros. and Kiddicraft was far more eye catching. Combined with the difficulties thrown up by the current economic climate; increased imports, the rising cost of raw materials, increased labour costs and removal of fixed prices, it was inevitable that even large businesses could not guarantee long term security and survival. Desperate measures were tried by some, but by the beginning of the 1980s over sixteen British companies had collapsed including some of the major players; Lesney, Mettoy, Berwick Timpo and Airfix. Eventually these were to be absorbed by other companies in the US and the Far East, as well as in Britain. However, many major British companies managed to survive including some venerable examples, such as Britains, Spears, Hornby, Waddingtons, Galt and Cassidy Brothers. Torquil Norman started Bluebird Toys in 1983, his first product being the now famous Big Yellow Teapot House. This was one of the first ‘container’ houses which broke away from the traditional architectural style of dolls’ houses in favour of this light and colourful family home.     PLEASANT COMPANY’S AMERICAN GIRLS COLLECTION: THE CORPORATE CONSTRUCTION OF GIRLHOOD by NANCY DUFFEY STORY (Under the direction of JOEL TAXEL) ABSTRACT This study examines the modes of femininity constructed by the texts of Pleasant Company’s The American Girls Collection in an effort to disclose their discursive power to perpetuate ideological messages about what it means to be a girl in America. A feminist, post structual approach, informed by neo-Marxist insights, is employed to analyze the interplay of gender, class, and race, as well as the complex dynamics of the creation, marketing, publication and distribution of the multiple texts of Pleasant Company, with particular emphasis given to the historical fiction books that accompany the doll-characters. The study finds that the selected texts of the The American Girls Collection position subjects in ways that may serve to reinforce rather than challenge traditional gender behaviors and privilege certain social values and social groups. The complex network of texts positions girls as consumers whose consumption practices may shape identity. The dangerous implications of educational books, written, at least in part, as advertisements for products, is noted along with recommendations that parents and teachers assist girl-readers in engaging in critical inquiry with regard to popular culture texts.
