1954 Los Yankees ganaron 103 juegos en 1954 (número mayor de cada una de las 5 temporadas anteriores), pero esto solo sirvió para quedar a 8 juegos del primer lugar obtenido por los Indios de Cleveland, equipo que con sus 111 juegos ganados dejaron maravillados a propios y extraños en la temporada. El récord actual es de los Yankees (1998) con 114 victorias. En el año de 1954 hubo varias modificaciones en el escenario de las Ligas Mayores. Los Cafés de San Luis cambian de residencia y se instalan en Baltimore naciendo el famoso equipo de los Orioles; Arnold Johnson compró a los Atléticos de Philadelphia emigrando el equipo hacia Kansas City. En el año aparecieron nuevas caras que después serían leyendas: Hank Aaron inició en el jardín izquierdo una época de 23 años para los Bravos de Milwaukee (que después pasarían a la ciudad de Atlanta); Ernie Banks jugó su primera temporada completa como Cachorro en el campo corto y Al Kaline se integra por primera vez a los Tigres en un primer año de 22 con Detroit. Los Dodgers de Brooklyn ganan 7-5 a los Piratas. Los Cardenales pierden 7-6 ante los Bravos en un partido donde el novato Hank Aaron se va de 6-5. Stan Musial conecta 5 jonrones el día 2 de mayo en una doble jornada en San Luis. En el segundo partido Don Mueller se va de 5-5. Los Filis y Cardenales utilizan 42 jugadores en un partido de 11 entradas ganando Philadelphia 14-10. Cardenales utilizó a 8 lanzadores y Filis usó 7. Los Senadores vencen a Medias Blancas en un partido en el que Roy Sievers recibe base por bolas con casa llena para la victoria en el último inning. El novato Wally Moon de los Cardenales logra dos juegos de 5 hits. 2 Ted Williams regresa al juego después de una lastimadura y se va de 9-8 con dos cuadrangulares y 7 carreras producidas en una doble jornada el día 16 de mayo ante los Tigres. Batea de 4-3 y de 5-5 y ambos partidos los pierde Boston, el segundo en 14 entradas. El día 12 de junio Bob Feller de los Indios se anota el ponche 2,500 ante Boston en una victoria por marcador 4-3. Jim Wilson (Milwaukee) lanza sin hit ante Filis. El 4 de Julio los lanzadores Mike García, Ray Narleski y Early Wynn blanquean a los Medias Blancas sin hit hasta la novena, cuando Minnie Miñoso conecta sencillo. El día 13 de julio se celebra el juego de estrellas con una victoria de la Americana 11-9 sobre la Nacional. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.
