“Feeding God’s People” Communion Sunday God and Elijah 1 Kings 17: 1-7(NLT) Welcome Prayer Feeding God’s People Elijah Fed by Ravens-1 Kings 17:1-7 17 Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, “As surely as the LORD , the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!” 2 Then the LORD said to Elijah, 3 “Go to the east and hide by Kerith Brook, near where it enters the Jordan River. 4 Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food.” 5 So Elijah did as the LORD told him and camped beside Kerith Brook, east of the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook. 7 But after a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land. Is the rain god or the reign of God in control? The LORD God provides for Elijah. Our God is the great protector. He looks out for Elijah. He looks out for you and for me. There are times when you have to stand up to the bully. The LORD God is our protector and our provider. 4 Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food.” 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook. Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son.

I Feel All Alone Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, “As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!” 1 Kings 17:1 (NLT) My identity is grounded not in where I come from but in whose I am. “Go to the east and hide by Kerith Brook, near where it enters the Jordan River.” 1 Kings 17:3 (NLT) God may be at work in my life preparing me for what God has planned for me even though I may feel misunderstood and all alone. “Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food.” 1 Kings 17:4 (NLT) God provides what I need in trying times when I depend on God alone. But after a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land. 1 Kings 17:7 (NLT) Even when I seek to obey God, difficult times may still come my way. “Go and live in the village of Zarephath, near the city of Sidon. I have instructed a widow there to feed you.” 1 Kings 17:9 (NLT) There are times God may call me to leave where I am and go to where I am supposed to be. But she said, “I swear by the Lord your God that I don’t have a single piece of bread in the house. It is because of this religious signifcance that sites all around Jordan have been designated as pilgrimage sites and have been visited by Pope John Paul VI, Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis within the past half century. As a land dedicated to religious coexistence, the country of Jordan maintains these religious sites for the use of pilgrims from all around the world. 1 Jordan’s Religious Legacy Today I am in Jordan, a land familiar to me from the Holy Scriptures – a land sanctifed by the presence of Jesus Himself, by the presence of Moses, Elijah and John the Baptist; and of saints and martyrs of the early Church. Yours is a land noted for its hospitality and openness to all. Elijah Serve God Alone The Bible Study What you will need: Bible, pen and note pad for each participant A stone to add to the altar - paint the stone white and either paint on a bird (Black) or stick on a cut-out of a bird. Sunday school song – “The raven’s wings:” – get group to try and remember it, then sing it and do the actions. Song “There is a balm in Gilead” – some may remember this song. Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." 1 Kings 18:21 (NIV) 1 Kings 16:29 to 2 Kings 2 The name Elijah means, my God is Yahweh. Elijah was a prophet. A simple definition of the word prophet is, “one who divinely inspired to foretell or tell forth the word of God. In the tradition of Samuel, Nathan, Gad, Isaiah, Jeremiah and other prophets Elijah was appointed by God to bring His word to the kings. Elijah in Context When Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, became king, the northern tribes revolted. (1 Kings 12) Jeroboam became king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. One of his first big decisions was to establish idol gods shaped like golden calves and set up shrines in pagan high places. He also instituted an alternate festival similar to the Feast of the Tabernacle. Because Jeroboam caused the people of Israel to turn from God the kingdom was taken from his son Nadab as the prophet Ahijah predicted.

It is the capital and most populated city of Jordan, considered to be one of the most liberal and modernized Arab cities. ‘Ain Ghazal is the earliest known settlement dating back to the Neolithic site, Amman itself being built on the site of “Rabbath Ammon” an Iron Age settlement, the capital of the Ammonites. During the Greek and Roman periods it was known as Philadelphia before being renamed as Amman. Modern Amman dates back to the 19th century AD, being abandoned for most of the medieval and post medieval periods, when a new village developed with its municipality being birthed in 1909. Starting on seven hills, it has expanded over 19 hills, combining 27 district, which are managed by the Greater Amman Municipality with Yousef Al-Shawarbeh as its mayor. Each are is named after the hills they occupy or the valleys. The west of Amman is more modern and serves as the economic centre of the city while the East side of Amman is filled with historuc sites that host cultural activities. Being found on the outskirts of Amman in 1974 by construction workers, the site of ‘Ain Ghazal was presumed to be inhabited 3000 during the 7000 BC, being a typical aceramic Neolithic village with rectangular mud-bricked buildings with walls made up of lime plaster.

Unless Baal was worshipped, rain would not fall. Without rain, there would be no crops. And without crops, there would be no life…Elijah appears on the scene surprising 1 abruptness. He is introduced without any information about his prior life, without reference to his family or clan in Israel, and even his birthplace (Tishbe) is not known with confidence today. He is assigned no elaborate pedigree, whereby we could place him in the social register in ancient Israel, and no support group is mentioned for whom he could be considered the spokesman.
