Miller Sacred Slaughter: The Discourse of Priestly Violence as Refracted through the Zeal of Phinehas in the Hebrew Bible and in Jewish Literature Abstract The story of Phinehas’ zealous slaying of an Israelite man and the Midianite woman with whom he dared consort in public (Numbers 25) is perhaps the most notorious of a number of famed pentateuchal narratives that are marked with vigilante violence. Significantly, these narratives feature members of the Israelite priesthood or their eponymous ancestors. When reading these texts together, we uncover a consistent literary undercurrent which associates the priesthood with acts of interpersonal violence –– a phenomenon which I refer to as the motif of priestly violence. This dissertation examines the origins and discursive functions of this motif, and, employing the violence of Phinehas as a test-case, explores its interpretive afterlife in biblical and Jewish literature. I argue that likely impelling the motif of priestly interpersonal violence is the cultural memory of the violence of the sacrificial cult –– be it the violence inherent in the slaughter of animals, or the possible Israelite prehistory of human sacrifice. Despite these seemingly negative associations, the discourse of priestly violence functions as a critical legitimating component of the priestly imagination in the Hebrew Bible. Indeed, numerous biblical texts insinuate that it is violence, not the right lineage, that generates priestly identity. Exploring the - iii - Nachleben of Phinehas’ famed violence, I demonstrate how ancient readers of the Hebrew Bible recognized and were sensitive to these facets of the motif. My findings reveal that the legitimating function of Phinehas’ priestly violence continues in the Jewish literary tradition. From the literature of the Second Temple period through the rabbinic canon and continuing through the medieval midrashim, Jewish authors employed Phinehas’ violence in the service of their own discourses of group (de)legitimation. Priestly groups with questions about their pedigree, such as the Hasmonaeans, appropriated the discourse of Phinehas’ violence as a bulwark against the contestation of their priestly identity. But we also find subversive uses of Phinehas’ violence, particularly in Palestinian rabbinic texts, which question the integrity of Phinehas’ priestly lineage as well as the propriety of his lethal zeal. Josephus As Political Philosopher: His Concept Of Kingship Abstract Scholars who have discussed Josephus’ political philosophy have largely focused on his concepts of aristokratia or theokratia. In general, they have ignored his concept of kingship. Those that have commented on it tend to dismiss Josephus as anti-monarchical and ascribe this to the biblical anti- monarchical tradition. To date, Josephus’ concept of kingship has not been treated as a significant component of his political philosophy. Through a close reading of Josephus’ longest text, the Jewish Antiquities, a historical work that provides extensive accounts of kings and kingship, I show that Josephus had a fully developed theory of monarchical government that drew on biblical and Greco- Roman models of kingship. Josephus held that ideal kingship was the responsible use of the personal power of one individual to advance the interests of the governed and maintain his and his subjects’ loyalty to Yahweh. The king relied primarily on a standard array of classical virtues to preserve social order in the kingdom, protect it from external threats, maintain his subjects’ quality of life, and provide them with a model for proper moral conduct.

However, the temple is not outlined in detail. I Chron. 28:11‐19 does seem to indicate that the Lord gave David some sort of plan or model. The tabernacle was an ornate tent shrine that served the people of Israel for approximately 200 years until it was replaced by Solomon’s temple. This temple served as God’s home for approximately 400 years until the Babylonians destroyed it in 586 BC. When the Israelites returned from Babylon, Zerubbabel over saw the rebuilding of a much inferior temple in 520 BC. This building was damaged and repaired many times until Herod built his “renovation” in 19 BC. The Roman General, Titus destroyed this temple in 70AD. II. Its success story is all the more astonishing when one considers that this document was not composed by one of the powerful nations of antiquity, such as the Egyptians or Assyr- ians, the Persians or Babylonians, the Greeks or Romans, but by a tiny nation that at various times in the course of its history was dominated by all of the above-mentioned peoples. And yet it was precisely this legacy of the Jews that, with the spread of Christianity and Islam, became the foundation for the literary and religious inheritance of the greater part of humanity.     Zealots – Fanatics or Heroes Parshat Pinchas - 2005 We are a people who love labels of the extremes. In assessing zealots there is a very, very thin line in determining who is a hero, worthy of praise and adoration and who is a fanatic deserving of contempt and rejection. Over the centuries we have been blessed by many zealots who sought to keep the Jewish spark alive. One collectively accepted hero is Mattiahu, whose blow against a Jew worshipping a pagan god, cascaded into the Maccabean revolt and our eventual freedom from Assyrian tyranny. On the other hand, during the last decade we have witnessed a number of zealots who chose to take the law into their own hands. These include: Dr. Baruch Goldstein of the Hebron massacre; Yigal Amir, Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin’s assassin, and Eden Natan Zada, a young soldier who murdered four innocent Israeli Arabs. Yet, one person’s fanatic is another’s hero. Being a zealot does not mean automatic inclusion into the Hall of Jewish heroes. Dramatic action driven by religious passion does not mean that Klal Yisrael – the nation of Israel – has benefited -- has been lifted to a higher spiritual plane. In fact, it may be just the opposite. Passion supporting a point-of-view, whether it is for withdrawal from the territories or against withdrawal, does not permit one Jew to act against another Jew or gentile with violence. So, what about our ancestors? Didn’t they face the thorny issue of zealotry – fanatics or heroes? How did they respond to such actions? Torah is not only a book of our past…it is the story of our people l’Dor v’Dor – from generation to generation.

They had arrived at the promised land decades earlier, but the people had rebelled—refusing to trust God to give them the land. They believed it would be better to die in the wilderness than follow God (Num. 14:2), so God sent them into the wilderness for 40 years (vv. 28-29). In time, all of the adults died except for Joshua, Caleb, and Moses. The children grew up and more children were born. The Israelites disobeyed God time and again, but God still provided for them. He planned to keep His promise to give Israel the promised land.
