The property at 5463 Dundas Street West is listed in the City of Burlington‟s heritage inventory as a potential heritage resource. A HIS was issued in January 2008 for the development site, which included properties in Lots 1 and 2 Concession 1 North Dundas Street (NDS). The January 2008 statement excluded consideration of the Crooks/Alexander Farm House and associated landscape because the consultant was advised that the City had agreed to its demolition (Appendix O). Notwithstanding that prior consent, the City has required a HIS for the Crooks/ Alexander Farm House. In accordance with the OP policy and policies 2.6.1 and 2.6.3 of the Provincial Policy Statement issued under the Planning Act, the owner of lands at 5463 Dundas Street West commissioned this HIS to identify, evaluate and assess the heritage values within and near the subject property in light of the proposed development and to recommend mitigation measures to address any adverse heritage impacts. The subject property contains the built heritage resource known as the Crooks/Alexander Farm House. This 1 ½ storey frame residence is clad in modern siding and rests on a random coursed, rubble stone and concrete block foundation with a gable roof and a one storey rear wing. The house is a mid 19th century vernacular interpretation of the Gothic Revival architectural style. The House was constructed circa 1855 for George Crooks, the son of a prominent and early Ontario family. The Census of Canada suggests that between 1891 and 1901, the exterior cladding of the building was changed from wood to rough cast. The exterior of the house has flat arched openings with pedimented casings and 6 x 6 sashes. The house, which has undergone numerous exterior and interior alterations, exhibits a moderately low level of heritage integrity. The farm, originally owned and rented by George‟s father to others, was occupied by George Crooks for 13 years beginning in 1855 and then by John Alexander and his descendants until 1948. The farm land is intensively cultivated. The house has been unoccupied for a few years. There are no farm outbuildings, such as barns or sheds, remaining. The owner intends to develop the property for residential and associated uses. The site of Crooks/Alexander Farm House is proposed to be used for open space purposes. The subject lands were evaluated for cultural heritage value using criteria established under the Ontario Heritage Act after documenting the historical development of the lands. Heritage resource management options were considered. Based on this evaluation, it is my opinion that the Crooks/ Alexander Farm House at 5463 Dundas Street West does not have sufficient cultural heritage value or interest to warrant retention and conservation under the Act. I have recommended that: - this statement serve as sufficient documentation of the heritage values of the property; and - the demolition of the Crooks/Alexander Farm House be permitted as a condition of development approval subject to securing a commitment to commemorate the heritage values of the property. The adjacent/nearby heritage resources will not be adversely impacted by the proposed development of the subject site. In January 20081 I prepared a HIS for the west portion (5421 Dundas Street West) of the Evergreen Community development proposal. In that statement I recommended that the Crooks/Norton Farm House be conserved and the heritage values of the property be commemorated. I did not examine the property at 5463 Dundas Street West as I had been provided with a heritage clearance letter for the demolition of all buildings on the property at 5463 Dundas Street West (Appendix O). All buildings, except for the Crooks/Alexander House, on the property at 5463 Dundas Street West were demolished. The City has now required that the owner submit a HIS for 5463 Dundas Street West as the property is listed in the City‟s Register of Heritage Properties. Wayne Morgan, Heritage Planner, was retained by the owner to prepare this HIS in accordance with the Burlington Official Plan and to recommend any mitigation actions with respect to the heritage resources and values of the property and adjacent/nearby heritage resources.

As there were different commissions for losses to the British, the Americans, and Indians aiding both armies, a claimant may have made two or more separate claims. These claims were usually filed together but there was also a register of certificates supporting claims and pages were sometimes misfiled with other people’s claims. There were insufficient funds available to pay the claims immediately after the war and claims had to be resubmitted in 1823. Claims were rejected for a number of reasons, including fraud and lack of evidence. Agents were sometimes hired to appeal rejections or to facilitate the claim process. Carpenters, and other tradesmen, and merchants sometimes certified the value of lost items. Because of the delays in recompense some families were left destitute for over ten years after their loss. The ideal war loss claim included details for who, what, when, where, why, and how the loss occurred. However, many claims lacked some these details. Some documents were illegible or difficult to read. The claim registers in the collection were sometimes incomplete, illegible, or contained transcription errors. An effort has been made in the indices below to correct those problems.

    THE WAR OF 1812 MAGAZINE ISSUE 26 December 2016 QUEENSTON HEIGHTS, OCTOBER 1812: TWO CANADIAN EYEWITNESSES The battle of Queenston Heights, fought 13 October 1812, was the second British and Canadian defeat of an American invading force, the first being the surrender of Hull's army in August. Although a victory, the death in action of Major-General Isaac Brock, the British commander in Upper Canada, occasioned much sadness. For Canadians, Brock was the great hero of the War of 1812 and they honoured his memory by constructing a magnificent monument and tomb atop Queenston Heights with a 185-foot column, visible for miles around, including nearby American territory. George Jarvis was a 15-year-old volunteer in the 49th Foot in 1812. A volunteer was a prospective officer who lived with the officers but marched and fought with the enlisted men. If a volunteer displayed the requisite qualities and there was an opening in the officer ranks, he might procure a commission. Jarvis was successful, he was commissioned a lieutenant in 1813 and, at the age of 17, commanded a company at the bloody battle of Lundy's Lane in 1814. Leaving the army in 1817, he studied laws and became a judge in the eastern counties of Upper Canada. He died at the age of 81 in 1878. Jarvis's account of the death of Brock is of great interested because he was possibly the first person to reach the general after he was hit and it is notable that, despite the many myths to the contrary, Jarvis did not hear the British leader utter a single word.

St-Denis: In Search of the Fisherman’s Path FEATURE In Search of the Fisherman’s Path Rethinking the American Assault on Queenston Heights GUY ST-DENIS Abstract : Canadian historians of the War of 1812 tend to associate a fisherman’s path with the initial success achieved by the Americans at the Battle of Queenston Heights. Unobserved, they made their way to the top of the escarpment and forced Brock to evacuate the redan battery located just below the brow of the heights. Desperate to retake this commanding position, Brock launched the ill-fated charge which resulted in his untimely death. It is a standard interpretation. But as this study reveals, the Americans had no particular need of a fisherman’s path. S THE FIRST YEAR of the War of 1812 drew to a close and the AAmericans became ever more desperate to establish a foothold in Upper Canada (now Ontario), it was decided to launch the early morning attack we now know as the opening phase of the Battle of Queenston Heights.

PUBLISHED BY THE GRIMSBY HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1958 FOREWORD In Booklet No.'i3 “Annals of The Forty” we began to record the history of the Loyalist and Pioneer Families of West Lincoln. They have been compiled in alphabetical order and we have endeavored to keep within the dates of 1783 to 1833. As has been pointed out in forewords of other booklets, from time to time earlier data has been included to explain where families originated and where they lived before coming to Canada. And in a few instances, the date 1833 has been extended to help historians gather information about pioneer families who settled here after the War of 1812. Booklet No. 9 contains the families T to Z and completes the Loyalist and Pioneer Families. Notes at the end of the booklet are recorded, also in alphabetical order, to correct errors and give added history which has come to light in the years between the publishing of No. 3 and No. 9. We have recorded the history of 228 families and it has taken six years of research to collect the material. We have secured some of it from the Ontario Archives, from other’ historians in the Niagara peninsula and from early documents preserved by various families. And in rare instances from those who have compiled family trees. But for the most part we have had to piece bits of information‘ together and have added to them correct names and dates which have been in­ scribed on the tombstones of those early pioneers.
