Trocadero U-C.qxd:Maquetación 1 30/7/07 13:54 Página 63 DOS ALTERNATIVAS CULTURALES ANTE LA CRISIS ARGENTINA: LA MÚSICA DE LOS EXCLUIDOS Y ELTEATRO “BARRIAL” DE LA CLASE MEDIA. ABSTRACT Argentinian culture has been a witness – together with the economic crisis- of a group of artistic and cultural signs from which we, in the musical context- emphasize the beginning and development of the “cumbia villera”, a musical subgenre which shows the identity of the new urban poor man in Argentina, a kind of music that has prevailed within the tropical one as a claim to life style of inhabitants from poor villages, It refers to both, a marginal and social discrimina- tion. -

Film, Photojournalism, and the Public Sphere in Brazil and Argentina, 1955-1980
ABSTRACT Title of Document: MODERNIZATION AND VISUAL ECONOMY: FILM, PHOTOJOURNALISM, AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE IN BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA, 1955-1980 Paula Halperin, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Professor Barbara Weinstein Department of History University of Maryland, College Park My dissertation explores the relationship among visual culture, nationalism, and modernization in Argentina and Brazil in a period of extreme political instability, marked by an alternation of weak civilian governments and dictatorships. I argue that motion pictures and photojournalism were constitutive elements of a modern public sphere that did not conform to the classic formulation advanced by Jürgen Habermas. Rather than treating the public sphere as progressively degraded by the mass media and cultural industries, I trace how, in postwar Argentina and Brazil, the increased production and circulation of mass media images contributed to active public debate and civic participation. With the progressive internationalization of entertainment markets that began in the 1950s in the modern cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires there was a dramatic growth in the number of film spectators and production, movie theaters and critics, popular magazines and academic journals that focused on film. Through close analysis of images distributed widely in international media circuits I reconstruct and analyze Brazilian and Argentine postwar visual economies from a transnational perspective to understand the constitution of the public sphere and how modernization, Latin American identity, nationhood, and socio-cultural change and conflict were represented and debated in those media. Cinema and the visual after World War II became a worldwide locus of production and circulation of discourses about history, national identity, and social mores, and a space of contention and discussion of modernization. -

Digital Archiving on Chilean Music and Musicians, Part 2 by Eileen Karmy
H-LatAm Digital Archiving on Chilean Music and Musicians, Part 2 by Eileen Karmy Blog Post published by Gretchen Pierce on Sunday, April 26, 2020 We continue our digital mini-series with the second of two posts about online resources for Chilean music. If you missed the first one, click here. Eileen Karmy is a music scholar interested in music politics, labor history, and archival research. She completed her PhD in Music at the University of Glasgow in 2019 with a thesis on the development of musicians’ unions in Chile. She has researched on popular music in Chile, especially cumbia, tango, and Nueva Canción. She regularly disseminates her research through articles, blog posts, films, and digital repositories. She created the digital archive of musicians’ organizations in Valparaíso (memoriamusicalvalpo.cl) in 2015. She has published books and journal articles on Chilean New Song, tango orchestras, tropical music, musicians’ working conditions, and the social history of musicians’ organizations in Chile. These include the book ¡Hagan un trencito! Siguiendo los pasos de la memoria cumbianchera en Chile (1949-1989), co-authored with Ardito, Mardones, and Vargas (2016), and her article “Musical Mutualism in Valparaiso during the Rise of the Labor Movement (1893–1931),” Popular Music and Society, 40, no. 5, 2017. Digital Archiving on Chilean Music and Musicians, Part 2 In this post, I share a list of digital sources that hold relevant material and specific information about music and musicians in Chile that might be useful for scholars interested in researching Chilean music and culture in general. While I did not use these sites for my research on musicians’ unions I am familiar with them because they proved useful in my previous studies of Chilean popular music history. -
Astor Piazzolla This Is the Story of Travel, Travail and Triumph in the Life
Astor Piazzolla This is the story of travel, travail and triumph in the life of an Argentine musician, Astor Pantaléon Piazzolla. His travels were two-fold: across the continents and through many kinds of music. That he was able eventually to combine these musical strands into something new and distinctively his own was his triumph, but it was long-delayed and there were many travails along the way. Argentina’s spectacular 19th century boom had attracted millions of migrants, including Piazzolla’s Italian grandparents. By the time of Piazzolla’s birth in 1921, it was long over, but the rich ethnic mix it created had left a musical legacy. In the brothels of Buenos Aires, the music and dance of Spain, Cuba and Italy had fused with that of the gauchos and Afro- Argentine ex-slaves to create a new dance form, the tango. Its early manifestations were blatantly sexual and reeked too much of the bordello to be tolerated in polite society. But after some refinement in the salons of Paris it emerged in 1912 to sweep the world. Argentina especially went wild for the tango and its quintessential instrument, the bandoneón, an odd form of concertina with a characteristic tone. A public holiday, July 11, was declared Bandoneón Day, and tango cafés, dance halls and cabaret houses sprang up everywhere to cater for every social stratum. Astor’s father, Vincente, was an enthusiastic tanguero and dreamed that his son would become a bandoneonist. His dream came true but hardly in the way he imagined. It was with great reluctance that Vincente took his family away from this lively scene to search for prosperity in New York and it almost proved disastrous for his son. -
Escúchame, Alúmbrame. Apuntes Sobre El Canon De “La Música Joven”
