Latest News Update on Australian Defence Force operations - Press conference on 31 March with Vice Admiral David Johnston and Air Commodore Vincent ‘Joe’ Iervasi At the Press Conference on 31 March, Vice Admiral Johnston started with the contribution to Fiji in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston. It commenced with the establishment of an air bridge between Townsville, Brisbane and into Suva which enabled the ADF to very rapidly provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Fiji. Surveillance aircraft were positioned to perform air assessments of the degree of damage and helicopters were also deployed to increase the rate of the assessments being performed, and to commence the delivery of aid to the more remote communities. -

An analysis of the loss of HMAS SYDNEY By David Kennedy The 6,830-ton modified Leander class cruiser HMAS SYDNEY THE MAIN STORY The sinking of cruiser HMAS SYDNEY by disguised German raider KORMORAN, and the delayed search for all 645 crew who perished 70 years ago, can be attributed directly to the personal control by British wartime leader Winston Churchill of top-secret Enigma intelligence decodes and his individual power. As First Lord of the Admiralty, then Prime Minster, Churchill had been denying top secret intelligence information to commanders at sea, and excluding Australian prime ministers from knowledge of Ultra decodes of German Enigma signals long before SYDNEY II was sunk by KORMORAN, disguised as the Dutch STRAAT MALAKKA, off north-Western Australia on November 19, 1941. Ongoing research also reveals that a wide, hands-on, operation led secretly from London in late 1941, accounted for the ignorance, confusion, slow reactions in Australia and a delayed search for survivors . in stark contrast to Churchill's direct part in the destruction by SYDNEY I of the German cruiser EMDEN 25 years before. Churchill was at the helm of one of his special operations, to sweep from the oceans disguised German raiders, their supply ships, and also blockade runners bound for Germany from Japan, when SYDNEY II was lost only 19 days before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Southeast Asia. Covering up of a blunder, or a punitive example to the new and distrusted Labor government of John Curtin gone terribly wrong because of a covert German weapon, can explain stern and brief official statements at the time and whitewashes now, with Germany and Japan solidly within Western alliances. -

Mailto:[email protected] (25 October 2001) Abstract: This presentation explores the documentation cycle for major Defence contracts, from initial RFQ/RFTs, through bidding, contract negotiation and award, engineering design and support engineering, through to the production and delivery of all product related documentation to the client. All of the documentation leads to or derives from the contract, so how the contractual documentation is designed (as documents) can have a major impact on the authoring and production of the document. A case is made here that contracts should be structured according to SGML/XML standards that semantically tag document content. This offers several advantages (1) automated formatting – greatly reducing the cost of document production, (2) clear definition and easy tracking of contractual requirements, tender responses against requirements, and product delivery against requirements (3) easy establishment of related structural standards for downstream documents. The presentation then reviews that status of the development of a Legal XML standard, and a variety of tools that have been developed or implemented in Melbourne (Australia) that would greatly facilitate implementation and application of the standard for major Australian Defence projects. From the President Welcome to this edition of Call the Hands, our last in the Society’s 50th anniversary year. It includes a variety of short articles which are connected through various themes including the RAN’s first ship, HMAS Parramatta (I) and her namesakes. Another connection is the shared anniversary of the Naval Association of Australia (NAA) celebrating its 100th anniversary. Accordingly, we acknowledge our many readers who are members of the NAA. Their service in the RAN (past and present) has contributed to the history of Australia’s great Navy. The Society’s close connection with Parramatta (I) stems from the not insignificant project to recover her bow and stern sections from a Hawksbury River mudflat. These sections are now prominently displayed in Sydney. Additional information about this fascinating project recently came to light and has been published in the December Naval Historical Review now being distributed to members. We also feature a recent NAA commemorative service for HMAS Parramatta (II) and recognition of the commissioning commanding officer of HMAS Parramatta (III), Rear Admiral Guy Griffiths RAN, Rtd. Many interesting and sometimes obscure naval stories remain untold. Occasional paper 97 is a good example. It is the story of a small party of sailors landed in Arnhem Land from HMAS Fremantle (I) in 1958 to observe Japanese pearl fishing operations. This story was shared by Eric Deshon with Australian National Maritime Museum’s oral history volunteers and published in the ANMM’s volunteer newsletter ‘All Hands’ in June 2018. Recording historic events on canvas has been a traditional art form which continues today. -

INTRODUCTION This volume in the Sandringham Environment Series deals with the 'Cerberus', the iron−clad man−o−war and former flagship of the Victorian Navy that now lies rusting as a breakwater for small craft in Half Moon Bay, Black Rock. TODD† Sydney, New South Wales SUMMARY The Medical Officer’s Journal of HMAS Sydney was a record kept by the ship’s surgeon, Leonard Darby, of the conditions on the ship and the health, diseases, injuries and treatment of the sailors under his care. Records of anaesthesia and surgery indicate chloroform was mostly administered, as was ether occasionally. There was some use of intravenous and subcutaneous fluids for resuscitation. The journal also provides an eyewitness account of the Sydney–Emden battle on 9 November 1914 which occurred off the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and was a famous first victory for the young Australian Navy, making headlines around the world. The treatment of the many injured, mostly Germans, is described with the two Australian surgeons and the surviving German surgeon working together. Key Words: HMAS Sydney, naval, medic, anaesthesia, World War I Carefully stored and treasured at the Australian senior surgeon, Dr Leonard Darby, covering the War Memorial in Canberra is the Medical Officer’s period of World War I. There are descriptions of the Journal from HMAS Sydney, 1913 to 1922. This conditions on the ship and medical notes regarding large, heavy, leather-bound book contains hand- the sailors’ health and treatment. There are accounts written medical records documented by the ship’s of on-board surgery and anaesthesia as well as detailed descriptions of the injuries and treatment 1 2 of injured Australian and German sailors during the Sydney–Emden battle of 1914. -

Denomy3 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The feasibility and potential benefits of using Integrated Electric Plants in future Great Lakes self-unloaders are evaluated. Integrated Electric Plants, the all-electric ship, utilize electrical propulsion motors and central station power generation that powers all propulsion, thruster, self-unloading equipment and other ship service needs. Integrated Electric Plants have become the plant of choice in many recent naval vessels, cruise ships, high technology cargo vessels and special purpose vessels, such as offshore supply and service vessels and icebreakers.
