All of the documentation leads to or derives from the contract, so how the contractual documentation is designed (as documents) can have a major impact on the authoring and production of the document. A case is made here that contracts should be structured according to SGML/XML standards that semantically tag document content. This offers several advantages (1) automated formatting – greatly reducing the cost of document production, (2) clear definition and easy tracking of contractual requirements, tender responses against requirements, and product delivery against requirements (3) easy establishment of related structural standards for downstream documents.
