200808 ANNUAL REPORT NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES CHAIRMAN’S LETTER The President The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: It is my privilege to present to you the 2008 annual report of the National Endowment for the Humanities. At the White House in February, I joined President Bush and Mrs. Bush to launch the largest and most ambitious nationwide initiative in NEH’s history: Picturing America, the newest element of our We the People program. Through Picturing America, NEH is distributing forty reproductions of American art masterpieces to schools and public libraries nationwide—where they will help stu- dents of all ages connect with the people, places, events, and ideas that have shaped our country. The selected works of art represent a broad range of American history and artistic achieve- ment, including Emanuel Leutze’s painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware; Mary Cassatt’s The Boating Party; the Chrysler Building in New York City; Norman Rockwell’s iconic Freedom of Speech; and James Karales’s stunning photo of the Selma-to-Montgomery March for Voting Rights in 1965. Accompanying the reproductions are a teacher’s guide and a dynamic website with ideas for using the images in the study of American history, literature, civics, and other subjects. During the first round of applications for Picturing America awards in the spring of 2008, nearly one-fifth of all the schools and public libraries in America applied for the program. In the fall, the first Picturing America sets arrived at more than 26,000 institutions nationwide, and we opened a second application window for Picturing America awards that will be distributed in 2009. -

2018 ANNUAL REPORT The DNA Learning Center is an operating unit of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, extending its traditional research and postgraduate education mission to the college, pre-college, and public levels. Founded in 1988, the DNALC is the world’s first science center devoted entirely to genetics education. The mission of the DNA Learning Center is to prepare students and families to thrive in the gene age. We envision a day when all elementary students are exposed to principles of genetics and disease risk; when all high school students have the opportunity to do hands-on experiments with DNA; and when all families have access to genetic information they need to make informed health care choices. Secondary education in China is ruled by the omnipresent Gaokao, an extremely high-stakes exam taken in the 12th grade that determines a student’s college placement. The rote memorization of facts required by this exam has made science labs a luxury throughout China and relegated what little practical work is done to after-school clubs. -

Each golf course would have been memorable in its own right but when you play five of the world’s top 30 course in eight days its hard to explain what kind of experience this provided for each of us. This was truly a lifetime gift that gave our current players a lifetime of memories and is a trip that every Seminole golfer can look forward to during their Florida State career.”– Trey Jones he Florida State men’s golf team enjoyed the trip of a lifetime as five members of the team played nine of the world’s most historic golf courses including Royal Turnbury and the St.Andrew’s Old and New Courses in August of 2003. Trey Jones,Florida State’s first- year head coach,made the trip with senior Tim Vickers,juniors Matt Adcock,Rusty Mosley and Mark Sestilio along with sopho- more Adam Wallace and assistant coach Mark Donaldson. Carl Domino,a Florida State University alumnus and current member Tof the State of Florida House of Representatives,endowed the trip as he has many others like it for the Seminole men’s and women’s golf teams. While over 3,500 students of color entered school with the guidance of Early Steps, it is humbling to know that the impact has been so much greater. We hear time and © 2012 Victoria Jackson Photography again how families, schools and lives have been trans- formed as a result of the doors of opportunity that were opened with the help of Early Steps. Doors where academic excellence is the norm and children learn and play with others whose life’s experiences are not the same as theirs, benefitting all children. We are proud of our 30-year partnership with now over 50 New York City independent schools who nurture, educate and challenge our children to be the best that they can be. They couldn’t be in better hands! Tonight we honor four Early Steps alumni. These accomplished young adults all benefited from the wisdom of their parents who knew the importance of providing their children with the best possible education beginning in Kindergarten. -

Known among New York City independent schools as a place where children are simultaneously encouraged to revel in the joys of childhood and confront the challenges presented by the modern world, ECFS emphasizes ethical thinking, academic excellence, and student-centered learning. PRINCIPAL, FIELDSTON UPPER - Nigel Furlonge was Associate Head of School at Holderness School from 2015-2018 before his appointment at ECFS. Previous posts include Admissions Director and Dean of Students and Residential Life at Christina Seix Academy, Academic Dean at The Lawrenceville School, and Director of Studies at St. Andrew’s School (DE). Nigel is a graduate of Boston Latin School and holds a B.A. in American History with a minor in African American Studies from The University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. in American History from Villanova University, and an M.Ed. in Organization and Private School Leadership from Columbia University. School Harassment Policy
SCHOOL HARASSMENT POLICY Prohibition on Harassment in any Form Poly Prep believes that a respectful, sensitive, and safe working and learning environment for all members of the Poly community is of utmost importance. To maintain such an environment, all students, students’ families, staff, and employees of contracted service providers are expected to adhere to the highest standards of decency, goodwill, mutual respect, empathy, and sensitivity to others. While Poly values open discussion about religious, political, and other personal beliefs and values, it expects all such discussion to be engaged in in a respectful manner and in a way that adheres to the standards set out in this Policy. Poly does not tolerate any behavior whatsoever that violates these standards. Specifically, Poly prohibits any and all forms of harassment, whether such harassment takes the form of physical, verbal, or electronic interaction. Prohibited harassment includes acts of discrimination based upon actual or perceived race, religion, religious or spiritual practices, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, immigration status, handicap, disability, physical body type, weight, marital status, family structure, economic situation, neighborhood of residence, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, veteran status, age, sex, creed, genetic predisposition, disease carrier status, or any other basis protected by federal, state, or local law. Prohibited harassment includes behaviors commonly recognized as bullying, hazing, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse/assault. All are prohibited by this Policy. Definition of Bullying Poly Prep defines bullying as some form of physical, verbal, demonstrative, or electronic harassment that has the effect of demeaning and hurting its victims or others in the Poly community, regardless of its intended result or effect.
