En este espacio, con relativa autonom{a dentro del Departamento de Instruccion Publica, los inteLectuales puertorriquenos crearon una obra art{stica con fines pedagogicos que resuLto ser no solo didactica, sino que produjo La primera muestra de cine puertorriqueno, los inicios de la grafica puerto rriquena y el taller de reunion para varios de los escritores de Ia llamada promocion del 40, entre quienes se destaca Rene Marques. Esta investigacion muestra el doble movimiento de Marques como jefe de Ia unidad editorial de La Division y "Uder inte lectual" de su promocion. Palabras clave: Puerto Rico, cultura, educacion, Rene Marques, intelectuales Abstract In 1948, when Luis Munoz Mar{n became Puerto Rico's first elected governor, the island entered a period in which key institutions and foundational discourses were created. Although the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquefia, founded in 1955, may have been the first government agency formally charged with defining "Puerto Rican cul ture," the Divisi6n de Educaci6n de la Comunidad (DivEdCo) had begun to promote a normative vision of puertorriquefiidad, through art and writing, seven years earlier. -

SPRING 2012 25 A Nuyorican Absurdist: Pedro Pietri and His Plays of Happy Subversion David Crespy Jerzy Grotowski once wrote of the visionary Antonin Artaud, “He wasn’t entirely himself;” the same might be said of the late poet Pedro Pietri—who wasn’t entirely himself since he began writing plays (Grotowski 117). Pietri’s body of plays, having been produced in New York since the late sixties and early seventies, recommends itself as an example of the wave of Nuyorican theatre in the US prominent at that time—characterized by experimentation in form and the merging of social issues within that form (Mohr 92). For Raphael Dalleo and Elena Machado Sáez, Pietri is a transi- tional figure, moving from the “anti-colonial project” of his early 60’s poetry to “reconcile himself to the emergence of the Post-Sixties Order” and, in so doing, reaching out to a broader audience (Dalleo and Sáez 12). After the 1960s, Pietri chose to “disorient” himself from the mass of populist social- realism that had characterized much of Latino/a playwriting prevalent before and up to the late 1960s, and to find his voice in his own brand of Nuyorican absurdism that has at its heart “a strong affirmation of puertorriqueñismo, pride in one’s essence and heritage” (Mohr 95). Reading Pietri is a great deal like reading Ionesco; there is the same cheerful dismemberment of language, the same static violence, and above all, a calculated disorientation which serves to scourge and reinvest language (in this case, three languages: English, Spanish, and Spanglish) in ways which skew all reasoned attempts to make sense. -

About the Centro Film Collection The Centro Library and Archives houses one of the most extensive collections of films documenting the Puerto Rican experience. The collection includes documentaries, public service news programs; Hollywood produced feature films, as well as cinema films produced by the film industry in Puerto Rico. Presently we house over 500 titles, both in DVD and VHS format. Films from the collection may be borrowed, and are available for teaching, study, as well as for entertainment purposes with due consideration for copyright and intellectual property laws. Film Lending Policy Our policy requires that films be picked-up at our facility, we do not mail out. Films maybe borrowed by college professors, as well as public school teachers for classroom presentations during the school year. We also lend to student clubs and community-based organizations. For individuals conducting personal research, or for students who need to view films for class assignments, we ask that they call and make an appointment for viewing the film(s) at our facilities. Items not included will be published in the next edition. From the Director... The academic year 2004/2005 was a particularly full one. We welcomed Claudia Rankine to the faculty; we participated in the inaugural course for the new Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for Col- laboration among the Arts; and on April 16, 2005, we hosted a celebration of the UH Creative Writ- ing Program’s 25th anniversary. This year we will welcome Kimiko Hahn to the poetry faculty and welcome Patricia Powell in the Fall and Peter Turchi in the Spring as visiting professors of fiction. And 19 new students will join the program: 10 in poetry; 8 in fiction, and 1 in non-fiction. In 2005/2006 we will address the undergraduate concentration in Creative Writing; we will work with the Graduate Studies Program to reform our graduate programs; and we will continue our ef- forts to build a strong and effective alumni association. It was especially gratifying in April to visit with alumni and former faculty. It allowed us the op- portunity to recognize the special contributions of some of our former faculty, to acknowledge people in the community who have generously supported the program over the years, and to ac- claim the achievements of our alumni. -

After a responding with a resolute ―NO,‖ I thought about it and remembered that the prior summer I had read an article in a newspaper about a group of people claiming to be Taíno protesting the management of the Caguana ceremonial site in Utuado, PR. Platón en El sofista, trata extensamente la existencia del no-ser, contradiciendo a Parménides: Forastero: Aquel que declare que existe la falsedad tiene la audacia de proponer el ser del no-ser; puesto que esto se supone en la posibili- dad de la falsedad. Ante lo cual exclama Teetetes: ¡En que rara complicación de ser o no ser nos hemos envuelto! Prosigue Platón a explicar la esencia del ser: Forastero: Mi noción sería que cualquier cosa que posea poder para afectar a otra o de ser afectada por otra -aunque sea por un instante- VII por muy leve que sea la causa o por insignificante que sea el efecto, tiene existencia real, por lo que sostengo que la definición de ser es sencilla- mente poder. -

BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre.
