INTRODUCTION

Wetaskiwin (/wəˈtæskəwɪn, -kwɪn/) is a city in the province of Alberta, Canada and is located 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of the provincial capital, . The City’s name comes from the Cree word wītaskiwinihk, meaning "the hills where peace was made." The current location of Wetaskiwin was once the site of a battle between the Cree and the Blackfoot. In 1890, when the and Edmonton Railway was built, it became a whistle-stop, and was known as Siding 16. In 1892, it was named Wetaskiwin to commemorate the battle. Shortly after the area was surveyed, a group of Scandinavian immigrants settled at the town site. Several businesses were established, including the community’s first newspaper, the Free Lance. Wetaskiwin's history is rooted in agriculture. The creation of the Wetaskiwin Co-op in 1917 by a group of locals has ensured that there has been value- added agriculture in the City for more than a century. Since the 1950s, manufacturing companies have chosen Wetaskiwin as the right fit for their business. Currently, the City of Wetaskiwin has heavy and light industrial land for sale in the South East Industrial Park. This shovel- ready land is available for $265,000 an acre with no offsite levies. To encourage development and growth, the City does not have a business tax or a machinery and equipment tax. Wetaskiwin is also ideal for service distribution, transportation, and warehousing operations. The City offers a strategic location - being just off the QEII Highway (Edmonton-Calgary corridor) and the CANAMEX Trade Corridor - making it easy for products to get to market. Wetaskiwin has the benefit of being close to multiple modes of transportation, whether it's air, rail, or highway.

The strategic location of Wetaskiwin can best be described by the CANAMEX corridor. The CANAMEX corridor is a series of improvements to freeways and other transportation infrastructure linking Canada to Mexico through the United States. The corridor was established under the North American Free Trade Agreement. Currently the corridor is defined by a series of 4-lane highways (including Highway 2 in Alberta). However, the corridor is also proposed for use by railroads and fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure.

4.2 Rail Services The nearest commercial rail services are Calgary and Edmonton, which are serviced by both CN Rail and Canadian Pacific.
